Animal Manure

Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-205 -- More Projects »

Using manure in farming and gardening began thousands of years ago, and from third-world farms to America's own backyard gardens, the manure movement continues. Routine application of animal manures to garden soils is one of the best things that can be done to improve the soil.

Manure supplies the soil with all sorts of essential nutrients, many of which can't be found in commercial fertilizers. Manure is rich in organic matter, something all garden soil needs more of. Some manure is higher in certain nutrients than others, because what an animal eats and the way it digests its food will affect the content and quality of the manure. But manures of all kinds are rich in the things soils and plants need most: nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, beneficial bacteria and organic matter. Note: Dog and cat manures should never be used in the garden because they can contain harmful organisms that are dangerous to people, especially children.

Finding Manure

Contact people who raise cows, horses, pigs or chickens. They'll probably let you take a load home. Stables and ranches are often listed in the Yellow Pages. State fairs and traveling circuses are great sources for free manure, which, mixed with hay or sawdust, makes for an ideal combination of ingredients. Likewise, the local zoo may offer free manure, and in many cases it is the most convenient source for urban gardeners. What's more, zoos offer some pretty exotic manure--from lions, tigers and bears--which some folks claim helps to deter garden pests such as rabbits and deer. If none of these are available, just head to the local nursery or home-and-garden center, all of which will carry packaged manure products, from cow and steer manure to worm castings to bat guano.

Using Manure

Manure should never be used fresh, because it releases harmful compounds as it decomposes (such as ammonia), that can burn plant roots. It may also contain thousands of weed seeds. Compost manure first, either alone or in combination with other forms of organic matter such as leaves or grass clippings. Let the pile cook from two to 12 months. Then spread the composted manure around existing plants, or mix it into unplanted garden soils.

So let me get this straight - you're saying the pus*y represents the cowboys, right?

Exactly what I thought.

It's a sad day when a Cowboy fan attempting to make fun of the Redskins actually creates something that makes fun of his own team more effectively :). Great work. Thanks for putting this here. It's too precious.

Oh, and did anyone notice the pus.....er cat representing the Cowboys so well actually completely misses the head of the Redskin? The Indian survives. :).
