Should we have kept Champ Bailey or Lavar Arrington?

I was flickin' through my bros Sirius sports stations the other day and over heard some sports guy talkin' about a decision the skins made a little over a year ago. They had to decide whether to pay Champ or Lavar and let the other go. This sports guy put up a good argument of how the skins chose the wrong superstar. Basically because of the trade of Champ, we've gotten Portis, Sean Springs, Carlos Rogers, and kept Lavar. We lost Champ, a second round pick and argueably Smoot(he is good friends with Champ and admitted that Bailey factored in to him leaving).

This is the scenario if we keep Champ and trade Lavar, who by the way has barely contributed since these events, we still trade for Portis from the broncos but for Lavar w/ or w/o our 2nd round pick. We don't get sign Springs. Smoot likely stays to play with his friend Bailey so we don't draft Rogers. Greg Williams defense is still great bc they played without Lavar last year anyway. With our pick this year we draft Derrick Johnson, who in my opinion will be alot better than Lavar if he isn't already, from Texas.

Johnson, who was drafted by the chiefs I think 11th, is said to be one of the fasted Chiefs' right now period. Up there with D. Hall. I will find the article that says this soon and add it. This kid can play sideline to sideline at MLB, like he does for the chiefs, or OLB, like he did for Texas. He is a freakin' animal like the old Lavar. The guy is already the leader of the Chiefs' new and improved defense that by the way didn't allow a 1st down against the Jets.

So in comparison we have Springs and Walt Harris at the corners(Rogers doesn't start yet) with Lavar coming off the bench complaining about the money the skins should of gave Champ, all while admitting to the media he may be "washed up".

or

Champ and Smoot at the corners with the animal Derrick Johnson at any line backer spot healthy and young.

Now some people may say that this doesn't matter because our defense is still great, but, since T.O. came to the eagles we could really use I guy like Champ to shut him down(similar to Hall on monday but better) while the rest of our defense focuses on Mcnabb and Westbrook. Plus, Coach Williams could assign super fast Derrick Johnson(4.3 speed) to shut down Westbrook or spy Mcnabb.

Personally I think that lineup would have a way better chance of dethrowning the Eagles. But, as it stands we kept Lavar(whom I'm honestly not fond of because he was in the upper suites laughing and smiling while we were losin to Dallas) and we lost Champ and Smoot. I still will be loyal to our current roster and wish them luck against the Cowgirls.

Did it occur to you that Denver needed the shutdown corner. Do you really think they were going to give up Portis for a LB? That was the whole point of the trade. Derrick Johnson better already? Wake me up when he makes 3 pro bowls or when he can take on a block.

Everybody forgets about Lavar. Gosh. Champ is overrated, Lavar was hurt (and subsiquently deamed overrated). He caused the first commotion of the last play (when we recovered that fumble) last week. He BULLED OVER two offensive lineman and made Orton scramble for dear life. Lavar is possessed this year. Trust me.

Our cornerback situation (and DB for that matter) is 10x better than it has been. Much more aggressive, less hype, and they consistantly get the job done. I think Sean Springs has been one of the top corners in the league for the past decade. And Rogers is going to be a premier corner in the league. He's a natural.

My main thing is, is that Champ didn't wan to be here, so let him go. He is also very overrated. There is a clip on the NFL network where a running back is jumping over a db, and the db didn't look like he really wanted to takle the rb. Guess who the db was.............yep Chump Bailey. Dude Lavar is an animal, he just got hurt last year. I would have made that trade in my sleep!!! Now stop smoking that stuff!!!!:dallasuck

I read your responses and they are all valid. But I think you took my idea too harshly. I said "I think" Johnson will be better and could be better now only because Lavar is still recovering.

Also, I noticed many of you say that Champ is overrated. I once thought this, but, upon deeper thought, listening to other NFL players, and looking at the game as a college player myself, I realized he's not. Champ Bailey, like him or not is the most athletic DB in the league, he has amazing speed, agility, and can jump with any receiver(maybe not moss). The reason he gets a bad rap alot of times is because he gets beat one on one. But, Champ Bailey is the ONLY db who will play man on man with the other teams best db for the entire game every week. I'm not talkin' D. Hall checkin' T.O. monday most of the game playin mainly off coverage with a couple jams, I'm talkin the Champ following the best receiver anywhere on the field jammin' him off the line. I know Springs was great in our defense last year cause he blitzed. But with Champ shuttin down the opps best WR he free's up our safetys(TAYLOR!) to blitz cause he doesn't need help.

The reason Champ gets beat? Ask any DB how hard it is to play bump n run with the best WR's all game. I have trouble with it on the college level, Champ checks NFL wideouts. You'll notice that many times defense either run zones with good wr's or they give their cb help, not with Champ.

Plus when Bailey was with us we didn't have the best pass rush so he was on an island many times. All I'm sayin' is look beyond the surface and you'll realize what we lost in the Bailey trade.

As far as trading Lavar for Portis, I think we could have done it. If not I'm sure we could have gotten another great rb for him.

Bailey didn't really want to leave, he was frustrated and wanted to be paid, we wouldn't give up the cash cause we were busy payin' Lavar. Plus, if you read Lavar recent interviews about his money disputes with the team it sounds alot like Champ. So does Lavar want to leave?

Man are you kidding me? I say we have a better corner in Springs, we got a increadible runner in Portis, and Lavar is our secret weapon this Monday night. Look for him to retire another Dallas Qb to the play by play booth.

Oh yea and just to make myself clear. I am so happy Smoot left. A good number 2 and nothing else while I say in a couple of year if not sooner Rogers goes to probowl.

Can Springs shut down T.O.? Champ has a better chance. Will Rogers lead the team in picks as a rookie? Smoot did his first two years. Will Lavar return to his pro bowl form? I hope so. Again, I'm not trashing what we have, I just wanted to see what people think of this other scenario. That's all.

He already has, Champ got burned by alot of guys last year and only made the pro bowl because of his name. Springs had a way better year then he did. Smoot isn't a good fit for this D, he is injury prone and not big enough to play the run without hurting his shoulder or something else. He gets beat all the time in coverage, he wasn't a true redskin because if he was he would have signed for less the Springs because you don't pay the # 2 CB like the #1.

The other scenario is a fairy tale, there is no way that would have happened.

You said Champ gets beat, of course he does and I've explained why. He plays man to man all game with top wr's. You said Smoot wasn't a skin, he was injury prone, and he was too small to hit. I recall Smoot getting hurt last year and still playing with an injured shoulder sacrificing for the team. Plus, I don't remember Springs one on one on T.O. I remember T.O. getting gang tackled by 3 guys in triple coverage. With Bailey those other guys could be blitzing. How is that a fairy tale. It is not that far fetched.

Dude. TO has already played twice against us. I say he was very well contained.

Did a Champ lead secondary give up 250 yards passing to Gus Ferotte on Sunday?

What ifs are what ifs...What if Joe G. had never originally retired...would we have suffered through 1 playoff team in 14 years...You just don't know.

Again, I hope Lavar returns to old form. But some things he says make me question how much he wants it. He already said he's glad he won't have to be a leader on D and that he's not sure if he is "washed up". Plus last year while injured he didn't seem to pay much attention to the games. Sometimes these players can lose their passion and I just hope that isn't happenin' to Lavar. I am still a skins fan and I hope all is well with our current team.

That is Lavar being humble and not hyping himself up. He has grown up and doesn't have to blert his name out for everyone to recognise him. He's leaving it all on the field this season.

And Champ may be a good player, but he's not exactly a team player. He can glue himself to certain players, but in a team concept he's subseptable to getting confused. Our D is based around everyone helping each other, and that chemistry is perfect right now, IMO. Our D is one of the best in the league, and our corners are playing extremely well. Champ is a good man-to-man guy (a good majority of the time), but I'm defintiley happy we have Springs and Rogers as our main men. They are great at zone, GREAT at zone. And they can HIT. If I had $100 every time Champ hit somebody hard I'd be broke.

He tried to hit Ronnie Brown Sunday in the Fins game and ended up in the dirt with a seperated shoulder, Ronnie walked away with nothing.

Ronnie's Auburn teammate Carlos would have probably told Champ to do that a little differently. :)
