One of two things happens. We make playoffs with Brunell or we finish with Campbell

The Ramsey benching is not so much an indication of a lack of sincere effort to field a Super Bowl team this year. It goes deeper than that. I think Gibbs knows that this isn't a Super Bowl team, or perhaps even a playoff team under Ramsey this year. This isn't so much a reflection of our philosophy on winning now or winning later, this is just an indication that the team and Joe Gibbs are officially completely removing their support of Patrick Ramsey. There is a fundamental injustice here, in that Brunell was given the benefit of the doubt for an extended period of time and Ramsey was not. Therefore, Ramsey is correct in interpreting this move as an indication that the Redskins are officially giving up on him as their QB and requesting a trade.

We already gave him a vote of no confidence when we traded into the the bottom of the first round, very possibly with the premeditated intent to make QB a large and immediate priority for this team long term. Gibbs doesn't care that this team's upside is lower with Mark Brunell at QB. He cares that he thinks Brunell gives us a better chance to win a handful of games than does Ramsey. Gibbs considers Ramsey a liability, a constant threat to destroy a well managed game in a situation where Mark Brunell's veteran discretion would have prevailed to the tune of another 9-7 victory.

Week to week, Gibbs truly feels Brunell is the better play. The playoffs are still an afterthought, Gibbs would settle for seeing some continuity on offense and a well managed game is the way Gibbs is comfortable accomplishing that continuity. No turnovers, no big mistakes.

When Gibbs realistically pictures this team winning the Super Bowl he's not picturing Mark Brunell doing it, but he's certainly not picturing Patrick Ramsey doing it either. Gibbs doesn't think Ramsey has what it takes. Mark Brunell gives us the best chance to tread water until we find a "real QB." Campbell presents that possibility, and Gibbs wants him on the field, this year if possible.

Campbell has become the QB of the future for the Skins, officially this week, he just won't be in there until later this year, unless we luck into the playoffs with Brunell. I guess if Dilfer could do it...
