What does this say about Campbell

Ramsey just didn't cut it. Gibbs won't start Campbell this year unless he has to. After this year, Campbell has to earn his job. That's what I feel some people here don't understand. You aren't promised a starting spot in the NFL. It must be earned everyday, especially while playing for Gibbs.

Gibbs didnt pick Ramsey, he walked in here and Ramsey was here with 2 years of crap under his belt. Gibbs chose Campbell in the draft following his trend to pick the best available QB when he has the chance and he feels Campbell has all the skills, I jump on this bandwagon aswell but he needs to be developed. Look for him to be the starting QB this time next year :)

Seriously, if Gibbs doesnt believe he can trust a guy who is in his fourth year, when does he think Campbell might be ready? Is he planning to play him on his 30th birthday?

Tenure isn't the key...it's talent. Campbell is Gibbs' guy...we'll may see him this season, though Gibbs hates playing rookies.

Gibbs has traditionally shied away from starting young players. Thats generally a solid practice - they make a hell of a lot of mistakes. So, yeah, I'd expect, barring injuries, that it'll be year 3 before Jason Campbell has a chance to start. If he just explodes and shows real steadiness and consistency next off-season, its possible he could get a shot, but I'd be surprised.

Irony is, if Gibbs had had Ramsey from his first day as a Redskin until now, we might be looking at a much steadier Patrick and a far different scenario. He certainly wouldn't have thrown Patrick into the fray and watch him get pummelled to death for most of a season. In Gibbs defense, Ramsey doesn't look like a 4th year NFL player coming into his prime - if he had, I don't think we'd be in this position.

And yeah, I know there are those that differ :)

Come on, don't be foolish.

Ramsey's evolution as a QB may not fit what Gibbs wants. That doesn't mean Campbell's will or won't. In some ways, Ramsey seems to be the current Stan Humphries for Gibbs. A guy capable of a lot, but who just never seems to mesh well with the coach.

IMHO, I think Campbell needs to learn, learn, learn, learn, learn, this season, and next season before he is starting. PART of the problem with Pat is that his growth as a NFL QB was stunted by Steve Spurrier's idiocy, and now he's had to learn a whole new system under Gibbs. Campbell needs time to get his feet wet. If we can get a good performance out of Mark, this season, and next. Then maybe Campbell will be ready. I look forward to that day. This endless drama surrounding the Redskins QB postition since Heath Shuler was drafted, crashed, and burned has become EXTREMELY tiresome to watch.

If we are not in playoff contention throughtout the year, I would expect Gibbs to through in Campbell just for the experience. But if he does that at any point this year, I would expect Campbell to be the starting quarterback for next season as well.

Dunno bout that Gibbs knows that starting rookies before they are ready can have nothing but negative effects. If he does start if the season goes awry, I hope Gibbs knows what hes doing...which he always does.

my question is that, can Brunell hold up for the entire season. Ok he's healthy now but the guy is 36 yrs old and who knows if he can with stand another 15 game season. if not who do you go to? Can't go back to Ramsey, that bridge is burned down, so you must go to the rookie.. Personally i was against the move but i hope Brunell doesn't get hurt, i hope he's successful for the sake of making the playoffs.

The difference between Jason Campbell and Patrick Ramesy, in my mind, is two fold: Talent and leadership. While Ramsey is talented, I feel that Campbell is more talented. Where they differ greatly is leadership. Campbell was the clear leader of Auburn last year during their should-have-been-national-championship run. Ramsey, to me, seems as if he doesn't have the confidence of his teammates. As others have said in this thread, Ramsey was here when Gibbs got here, Campbell was the chosen one.

Campbell will play next year, and that is a very wise thing to do. There is no reason to hurry him along. Brunell can hold down the fort this year, while Campbell learns things. Then he will be ready to take over and lead this team. You guys are really a quarterback away from being a very scary team.
