Blondie
if there would have been an EXTEMESKINS on November 18. 1985? The panic I have seen the last 2 days I don't think would even BEGIN TO COMPARE to that Monday night. Can you remember what you were thinking that night as we watched Theisman be rolled off the field on a stretcher. Our world was coming to an end. That was it. No more. It was over. Period. We would never win another game. Period. Theisman was at the helm of a 5-5 season. We had already lost to the Cowboys twice. And the Giants. And now......... In comes Jay Schroeder. Who? OMG........we are going to go 5-11. No doubt. HORRIBLE. But, guess what folks. We went 10-6. Yep. Sure did. Can you ONLY IMAGINE if there would have been an EXTREMESKINS on that fateful night. I shudder just thinking about it. Blondie
bulldog
forget '85, we finished 10-6. thoughts of Schroeder being the next Montana was dancing in people's heads quickly enough remember 1988 and the 7-9 thud after winning the Super Bowl  I am SURE if there was a board then at least SOME posters would be calling for Gibbs to be fired and for the Redskins to go out and hire Buddy Ryan to coach the team
hail2skins
No, Blondie, if you recall, Schroeder completed a pass of considerable length shortly after coming into the game. And then proceeded to lead us to the win. We wouldn't have had time to panic. And Schroeder was a complete unknown.....we had no idea what was in store. Many here look at Brunell's return and look back to last year and shudder.......although, in hindsight, dubious playcalling may have been the culprit more than #8 himself. hail2skins
I doubt it Bulldog......I'd expect fans would have allowed for a barely losing season for a guy who had already led the team to three SB appearances. I feel for Gibbs this time around.......at least the first time the Skins had come off a little recent success with Allen in the early-to-mid 70s and then barely missing the playoffs at 10-6 under Pardee in '79. Following the nightmare we're had to endure since he left has to be tough. I just hope that he has made the appropriate adjustments from last year and puts the offense in a better position to score, no matter who the QB may be. I know he did well........but you KNOW we all went into panic mode when Joey was laying on the field. The game thread would have been 100 pages. We can say NOW we would not have gone into rigor.........but I will admit I was pacing and ranting. Blondie
redman
remember 1988 and the 7-9 thud after winning the Super Bowl Yup, with Timmie Smith and Doug Williams sans their Super Bowl magic! :puke:
bulldog
you knew changes were coming in 1988 when the Skins lost to the Oilers 41-17 in an absolutely dreadful game where Doug Williams looked like he was 45 years old.
PCS
He may have done that, but he was still and unknown the the guy who had led the Skins to 2 SB's was down and out for good. I watched that game with some friends. And though Jay, ( at least he had a good name ), did well, there was a feeling that with Joey T. out and a rookie nobody knew in, the season was pretty much over. Oh, he would now get in and get some time in, but no way he would do what he did. Oh yeah, there would have been trouble. That being the case, imagine the meltdown the place would have had when the Williams/Schoeder controversy kicked in a couple of seasons down the road. hail2skins
Blondie, from the Post today: "Gibbs stuck with Theismann, who had thrown 8 TDs and 16 interceptions and a 59.6 passer rating.............." I was of course feeling really bad for Theismann at the time. But I'd be lying if it hadn't been really painful watching seemingly ever pass he threw that season get batted down at the line. As much as I hate to admit it, a lot of me was actually glad to see Schroeder come in.....and that isn't 20-year hindsight. In fact, if I remember correctly, wasn't that the same game that Riggins broke off a long run. It started further back than his famous SB run but there was Riggo chugging down the sideline a la Pasadena.......and then he got caught and fumbled. From that aspect, that night felt like the end of an era.
redman
Don't forget that the Schroeder-Williams mess occurred before the first playoff game. If you think this uproar is something in Week 1, imagine that!

hail2skins
The most wild threads on this board would've occurred when: 1) after Clint Longley beat us on Turkey Day 1974 2) after Mel Gray's phantom catch in 1975 to help send a game into OT which the Cardinals eventually won 3) after we choked away a 13-pt lead to lose 35-34 to the Cowboys in '79 and lose out on the playoffs 4) after we blew a 23-3 halftime lead in the '83 MNF opener to lose to the Cowboys 31-30 5) after losing 13-3 to the Cowboys in '89, giving them their only win of the season I would include the 3-0 loss to the J-E-T-S in '93 but I think we would've been too numb from the rest of the season to care. Nighthawk
I can still remember that '79 game like it was yesterday. We finished the season 10-6 and missed the playoffs. I couldn't believe it. Maybe it sticks in my mind because it was the final game of the year, it was against Dallas and it looked like we had the game won. Riggins had that beautiful 60 something run down the sideline. We were up 34 - 21 and then Staubach just killed us. We couldn't get a simple first down to run out the clock and that just gave Staubach the time to put a dagger in us.
China
I doubt it Bulldog......I'd expect fans would have allowed for a barely losing season for a guy who had already led the team to three SB appearances. SKINS/HOOS
I always felt bad for Joe, obviously for the injury, but also because he was having the worst year of his career and never got the opportunity to redeem himself.
Lombardi's_kid_brother
if there would have been an EXTEMESKINS on November 18. 1985?Blondie Considering how washed-up Theismann looked that year, it probably would have been called a blessing in disguise. The real story is how this board would have reacted up to that game as Joe threw interception after interception.

If you think this uproar is something in Week 1, imagine that! Remember the tension between the two. To a degree that Williams would have let Shroeder get some more time in the SB, but decided against it. Also think back even further to Kilmer and Sonny. George Allen didn't even want Sonny in the team picture. How would the board responded to that one...? Remember Theisman wanting to get on the field anyway he could, to the point he want to run back punts.

Art Monk Fan
.......although, in hindsight, dubious playcalling may have been the culprit more than #8 himself. So somebody called for Brunell to fumble behind the line to give up a touchdown? Multiple times? Fire that guy! Am I the only one who cringed every time we were pinned deep with Brunell at the helm last season? I'm praying for consistent good field position on Monday; if he drops another ball behind the line that gets run back, I swear my head will literally explode. rebornempowered
I was 10 and I don't remember anything accept for Back To The Future and Gremlins. I was ten too and I remember it clearly. I was a shattered ten year old wearing my Theisman jersey. I think I had "I hate the Giants" and LT is stupid written on my school notebooks for years. My wife to this day groans any time the injury is talked about on TV or in conversation because she is sick of me talking about how it "scarred" me as a child. Boy, do I ham it up when she is around just to annoy her.
