novak was the kicker for MD, i went to MD he was a stud, really strong leg and was pretty consistant in college..i would say he was one of the top3 or 4 kickers in college when we was...im not sure how different/harder it is to kick from the nfl hashmarks, but if he plays like he did for the terps it he'll be a good replacement for the time being....

Yup. When he first started he was shaky, but then he knocked in a game-winner (GA.TECH?) and was off and running from there.

He was in Bears camp last year.

just because novak wasnt on a team doesnt mean he isnt any good, not many kickers come right in out of college and get jobs, yeah there are a few like nugent, janowkoski, but most young kickers get there chance like this....he really is a good kicker, he was really solid after his first few games his freshman year....i think he a much better fix then bringin in proven bums like kimran and chandler

Three years ago, when we had our kicking problems, I remember posting.....I know one guy who the Skins should go out and get....Shayne Graham. The guy was clutch in college.

Of course nothing happen.

Then, the following year, the Bengals gave Shayne a shot, and, whammo, he's one of the best kickers now in the NFL.

Just thought I would share that story with all of you.

Concerning our new friend, Nicky:

http://2005.otcdraft.com/content/profiles/kicker/NickNovak.php

"Nick Novak has been among the top place kickers in the country for several years now. The fifth year senior who redshirted in 2000, has been starting for the Terps since his redshirt freshman year in 2001. As a sophomore in 2002, Nick was 8-10 on kicks of 40 yards or more and 3-4 on kicks of 50 yards or more. He was a Lou Groza award semi-finalist both his sophomore and junior seasons. Novak holds the ACC career scoring record with 393 points, shattering the previous record of 326 points set by Scott Bentley from Florida State. In 2004 he became the first player in Maryland history to receive the James E. Tatum Award, which is given annually to the conference's top student athlete. Nick has a strong leg and good accuracy. He is almost automatic from inside 40 yards and pretty consistent up to 50 yards. Quite a few of his misses have been between 55 and 62 yards. Nick is also one of the better kickoff specialists in the country. He has a great deal of talent that warrants late-round consideration in the draft."

Sounds like a viable option. He was, however, apparently released by the Bears and the Cowgirls this preseason. Both teams chose to keep veterans. We now have a rookie kicker and punter/holder. At least we don't have a rookie quarterback! ;)

A little more info...

Tue Aug 30, 6:31 PM ET

IRVING, Texas (AP) - The Dallas Cowboys finally found someone to compete for their vacancy at kicker, claiming Nick Novak off waivers from the Chicago Bears on Tuesday.

Novak is a rookie from Maryland, where he became the ACC's career leading scorer and fifth-best in Division I-A history. He produced 393 points, making 80 of 107 field-goal attempts and 153 of 159 extra-point tries

He made all three field goals he attempted for the Bears this pre-season. The Bears elected to keep veteran Doug Brien.

In Dallas, Novak will challenge Jose Cortez for the job Billy Cundiff held the last three seasons. After Cundiff was released last week, the Cowboys traded for Seth Marler of Jacksonville, but he failed a physical, voiding the deal.
