According to the article: "..Redskins, who The Post has learned were going to give Fassel the job had Joe Gibbs left after his first season." What the journalists would write about if they don't have all these "unnamed sources".

September 11, 2005 -- NO MATTER how excited he is about his team's chances to make a postseason run, this morning had to be bittersweet for Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Fassel. After seven consecutive years of waking up on opening day as a head coach, Fassel now starts his second season as a Baltimore assistant.

"It is different because that's what I did for so many years," Fassel told The Post from his office at Ravens headquarters. "But I have a job to do right now and I'm really having fun. I'm trying to help this offense improve and working with a good friend [brian Billick]."

While Fassel was reticent to discuss the head-coaching prospects in his future, The Post visited with several NFL types and found that the former Giants coach is expected to be in the running for several potential job openings.

Rumors out of Tampa Bay have Jon Gruden in his last season unless he can get the Bucs into the playoffs. Fassel, who worked with Bucs GM Bruce Allen while both were with the Raiders, has already been mentioned as a possibility to take over.

Other clubs with tenuous coaching situations that have already overtly or covertly expressed some level of interest in Fassel include the Vikings, Broncos and Redskins, who The Post has learned were going to give Fassel the job had Joe Gibbs left after his first season.

Fassel, of course, was up for several jobs right after he left New York, but had no luck. A second go-around last offseason also netted no fruit. However, many believe Fassel's return is at hand, especially if he's able to get anything going with the Ravens' struggling passing attack.

Fassel added the best part of coaching this year is having his son, John, on staff as a Ravens offensive assistant. "That's a lifetime dream come true," he said. "Guys like Don Shula and Marty Schottenheimer always told me no matter what you do to make sure you have your son on the same coaching staff with you at some point in your life."

Um.....has Joe Gibbs expressed his desire to even leave the game at this point? I think it would be a HUGE mistake to even be remotely interested in Fassel. Did you guys watch the Ravens game over the weekend? They have a fantastic defense, with an offense that struggles as bad, if not worse than our own.

I say let Williams take the reigns when Gibbs leaves.

I like Russ Grim Idea as OC. Greg williams should be the next head coach though.

This is the way we should go...

In about 3 to 5 years when it's an issue. Joe is our coach now.

I can honestly say that I never thought I'd see a day when people were hoping Fassell would come here to replace Gibbs. Maybe it's because Gibbs benched a turnover-prone QB that has never won anything consistently...what an idiot!

Gregg Williams should be the next Head Coach of the Skins. His leadership has solidified the defense. Hire Russ Grim as offensive coordinator and the Skins will be set.

Agreed - Joe ain't going nowhere. But when he finally does hang 'em up, give the job to Gregg Williams. He's earned it and the players love him.

Joe isnt going anywhere. I would hate to see some of the people on this board with adversity in their real lives. They must be a complete mess. Knee jerk reactions usually arent the best. I would love to see Ramsey succeed, but am hoping that Brunnel does well.

This article loses all credibility right there. There is no way in hell that Danny would have given the job to anyone other than Gregg Williams if Gibbs had left after last year. Must be the same source that Pastabelly uses.

Mr. Imay Diddup.

Before we go and say GW will be a great head coach, we have to look at his stint with Buffalo. Fassll got the ebst out of the Giants. He made the playoffs with Dave Brown. I always thought Fassell was a good head coach. He got the Gianst in the Superbowl in 2000. That was suppose to be our year. And he got them in the playoff in 02. If it wasn't for the collapse in SF, he probably still be the Gianst head coach. He would fit our personell well. I'll tell you Joe Gibbs faithful one thing, we better beat Dallas.

Cool man. You already live in Maryland. Feel free to tune into the Raven games to watch your boy Fassel...

If he comes here in a few years to help the offense when Gibbs leaves, wonderful. Until then, he's an average coach floundering on an average team.

But the Giants were never the same after the DC went to coach the Panthers.
