Pitbull
Take the ball and try to get our offense rolling and see what we got, or do we defer and let the defense set the tone early? I think I would let the defense set the tone early and get the ball after the half. By that time Ramsey and Gibbs should have a real good feel for what is working well for us. What are your thoughts? Joeythetapeworm
Convention says take the ball, but it would be an awfully interesting mindgame to give it to Orton to start.

FBChick
Personally, I'm going for losing the coin toss so there isn't a choice to make, cause I'm with the rest of you on letting the defense set the tone. But if we win the toss, we really do need to take the ball to give our O as many opportunities to get that ball in the endzone.
Streater101
You don't just get the ball back automatically because you chose to defer upon winning the opening cointoss. If the Skins won the cointoss, and chose to kick, then the Bears could choose to receive the ball again after the half.
Kevin West
I usually prefer kicking off to receiving, but the whole idea backfires if the Special Teams Unit doesn't keep them from returning it past, say the 25 yard line. A long return negates momentum, as well as field position.
manichispanic
if i'm playing madden or somethin, i always kick cause whether i'm ahead or trailing at the half, i can always use the ball. I'd have a hard time just giving the ball to the opposing offence if i was an NFL coach though. An opportunity to score is an opportunity to score. If the Skins won the toss and elected to kick then at the start of the second half the Skins are recieving the ball automatically the Bears dont have a option to choose anything but which direction they want to go. Actually, that's not true LL56. According to NFL.com, the loser of the coin toss chooses if they want to kick or receive in the second half. Here's the quote: http://www.nfl.com/fans/rules/cointoss Digest of Rules Coin Toss 1. The toss of coin will take place within three minutes of kickoff in center of field. The toss will be called by the visiting captain before the coin is flipped. The winner may choose one of two privileges and the loser gets the other: (a) Receive or kick ( Goal his team will defend 2. Immediately prior to the start of the second half, the captains of both teams must inform the officials of their respective choices. The loser of the original coin toss gets first choice. Of course, I don't care who gets the ball first, as long as the Skins have the ball last and Patrick is kneeling four times at the end!

Lavarleap56
Well i guess you learn something new everyday but i have NEVER seen it play out like that in a game . I recall many games where the team that has won the coin toss has choose to kick and they recieved at the begining of the second.

stwasm
Yeah, I'd prefer to let the defense do its thing first since that's the strength of the team. Do a three-and-out, force a punt, then give the offense a short field with which to work. Plus, as George Allen used to say, the first drive of the second half is the most important in that it sets the tone for the rest of the game. SouthernSkinsFan
Of what goal to defend. Not whether or not they will kickoff. Not to get too picky, because it really doesn't matter at all, but that's incorrect, S&T. The loser of the coin toss gets to to choose, prior to the second half, whether they want to receive or kick or defend a particular goal. If the loser of the coin toss chooses receive in the second half, the winner of the coin toss then gets to choose which goal to defend. Technically, a team could win the coin toss, choose to kick and then have to kick again to open the second half because the loser of the coin toss could choose to receive. But does it reeeaaaaallly matter? I submit that it doesn't matter much at all. I predict the winner of the Redskins-Bears game will be the team that has the most points at the end of the game. I'm done. :thud:
