PiLfan
yet more bashing from SI. they list the top 10 most surprising teams and disappointing teams of the modern era. i think we're the only team listed twice under most disappointing....the 2000 8-8 squad (of course)....and, get this, the 6-8 1970 team (apparently, the sudden death of Vince Lombardi shouldn't have had any impact i guess). oh, and of course, we're no where to be found in the 'most surprising' list.....like everyone expected us to make the super bowl in Gibbs' second year back in '82, right? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/specials/preview/2005/

scruffylookin
I'd agree with the 2000 squad. I disagree with the 1970 squad. Lombardi dying on the eve of the season must have been emotionally catastrophic for that team. Plus despite Lombardi's greatness in getting a winner on the field in 1969, we still had some defensive weaknesses that were not addressed until George Allen got here in 1971. I also agree with you, the 1982 Redskins came out of nowhere. The media didn't believe in them until 1983. We were called frauds (even after winning the Super Bowl..because it was a strike year) until we followed up 1982 with the 1983 juggernaut team who may have been the greatest Redskin team of all-time that unfortunatly decided to take January 22, 1984 off.
