SnyderShrugged
My wife and I have decided that the bet help we can offer to Katrina evacuees (I refuse to call a US citizen a "refugee" in their own damned contry!) is to offer our home for a family in need of one for a while. We have talked about it, and fully understand that our lives will be totally different and a bit tough for a while. It is nothing compared to what those families are going through. Does anyone know of links that we can use to find resource that helps to coordinate things like this?

Awsome gesture Skin :notworthy: :applause: I called the local disastor relief hotline and I got my name put on a list. They said they will contact me later in the week after they have more of a handle on the situation. Look for a local TV station and give them a call, I'm sure they can facilitate your request. You can also e-mail or call your state rep and governer's office, they will at least point you to the right people to talk to.
Huly
from: http://www.developmentseed.org/blog/node/310 Craig's List helping Katrina victims in many ways Submitted by Bonnie Bogle on Fri, 09/02/2005 - 17:07.Hurricane | The Field Craig's List is really becoming a hub for those who want to help people affected by Hurricane Katrina. Their New Orleans section not only has a section to post for missing friends and relatives, but also for temporary housing and employment and relief resources. Check out the housing sections for all areas hit or taking in refugees. People from all over the country are offering free or affordable housing to victims of Hurricane Katrina. It's really neat to see how many postings there are in all categories but particularly from people willing to take in families affected and help them get back on their feet. If you're looking for ways to help refugees from New Orleans or anywhere that was affected, go to Craig's List. HurricaneHousing.org Submitted by Bonnie Bogle on Fri, 09/02/2005 - 17:48. MoveOn.org is providing a service to search for free housing by distance from New Orleans and other areas. What a great idea and with their email campaign for it, they've already had more than 55,000 beds offered up. Go to HurricaneHousing.org if you'd like to open up your house to Katrina victims. reply

Blondie
Great move. If this process does happen......think about whether the family will have children. If they do, the best thing you can do for the children is to have all the local information about the schools ready for the parents so the task of getting the children in school is eased. Have information about the local workforce commission for possible employment opportunities. Gather information about local churches......all demoninations.....and be ready to contact pastors on their behalf. Just a few of the things that help the transition. Thanks! We've started setting things up through our local newspaper/web site for louisville. I actually have gathered a great deal of local information around jobs and schools because we recently moved here ourselves. I will also try to get whomever stays with us get a job at my company, at least as a temp. It feels like it's moving way too slow though! I don't want it to be too late due to red tape.
