Our Church in Euless, Tx, between Dallas and Fort Worth has agreed to take on up to 350 evacuees. We will be housing them in one of the buildings on our campus. We'll be providing all of their needs for probably several months. Our area is getting hit with a large influx of people from NO, as are other major cities in TX. The local government called in all the larger Churches to get assistance in housing the displaced. I'm glad we are able to help out such a large number, but would be lying if I said I wasn't concerned. Texas is going to take a huge number of displaced, and I suspect a large number of them will remain. I don't know what the long term impact will be to the surrounding states. Hopefully, being in a better economic environment will help some better themselves.

Our church is taking up an offering over the next couple of weeks and giving to the Red Cross.

It is going to be interesting to see how this thing plays out over the next few years. It will take so long to rebuild New Orleans that most people will probably decide not to return. I'm assuming they will have built new lives in their new locales.

Steve - curious about the impact on local schools. Are you expecting a large influx of new students? Or have these people been spread out throughtout the state?

They have been spread out. But we're just one church in a huge metroplex area. We are getting up to 350 people. I'd imagine there will be lots of kids. We may be looking at 1 million + displaced people. We will see a hugh impact. Texas has been assigned some type of federal disaster status. The schools have to take the children immediately. Which is obviously the right thing to do. People just can't imagine the scope of this disaster. Even if everyone was evacuated before the storm hit, the results would be no different. It is almost inconcievable, the challenges that lie ahead in dealing with all the displaced.
