WASHINGTON -- One of the biggest car dealerships in the Washington area has been accused of discriminatory lending practices.

In a complaint filed Thursday in Federal court, Anthony Lloyd of Germantown alleges that employees at Koons Tyson Toyota used "a discriminatory and deceptive lending scheme" to inflate the interest rate on a new car loan.

Lloyd is an African American and says he agreed to a 16-percent loan after he was told by a Koons employee that his credit rating was too low to qualify for anything else. Lloyd claims his credit rating was above average.

A lawyer for Koons tells WTOP the organization neither condones nor tolerates racial or other wrongful discrimination of any kind. Koons expects to vigorously defend the suit to protect its good name in the community.

The suit is one of the first in the nation to name a dealership as the defendant. Past cases have been filed against the lending establishments.

I hope there is more to this because it sounds more like they took advantage of him because he is stupid!

Hasn't this type of case (naming the lender instead of the dealership) happened before? I'm not sure if this is as far fetched as it immediately sounds. The only thing I have to say is you absolutely MUST shop around when buying a car. I just recently bought a car, as I'm sure some of you may know, and I went to every dealership I could. One helpful tip is to demand to see the loan rating chart if they have one, it lists the scores and the interest rate that matches up with it. Know your score before you go looking. If you are still curious apply for loans at different dealerships and compare the real rates.

I don't know if this case is true, but it can be avoided by putting in some time and effort.

One of the things I did was something dealerships hate to do, I applied for loans at two different dealerships and compared the rates they offered with eachother (it's like pulling teeth to get them to tell you) and to the national average so that I could be sure I wasn't being cheated.

I'm white and in the past, I've had a dealership try to take advantage of my claiming credit was an issue when I knew it wasn't. My great uncle owns a huge conglomerate of car dealerships and I can attest, they are out to screw anyone they can. My dad briefly worked there but couldn't sleep at night because of the practices so he quit and went into another career.

My dad's white too btw... :D

I believe it. I spent a month looking for a car and I found so many people lie to you that it's disgusting. I even had one guy get upset with me for comparing his price (2000 more then anyone elses). He proceeded to cop an attitude and accuse me of calling him a liar (which is exactly what he was).

Car dealers will do anything they can to make a buck. The guy is pissed because he didn't shop around and got shafted. His fault for being a moron.

I don't know if they screwed him or not but it would be funny if ripping off anyone they can is standard practice for them. If that's the case then all I can say is what goes around comes around, they screwed innocent people and now they will be labeled racist even if they aren't. Karma is a *****, so don't rip people off just because you can.

I completely agree with you karma is a whore. If they did this because its SOP or if their racist it's on them now. It's going to hurt their entire business just by being associated with this claim.

I should rephrase my previous statement. If he didn't shop around hes a moron.

Destino, on a side note your shark attack location lost some flavor on my monitor since extreme switched. The fin is cut in half.

Let me say that there is a lot of honest dealers out there. You just got to know who they are or how to find them.
I agree. I shopped around a lot and while doing the research it becomes obvious who is working for you and who is trying to scam you. It's just like everything in life you got good and bad people.

First off, I thought this article was going to be about Darcars I thought they were the shadiest dealership.

Second, I'm getting to the point in my life where I'm getting tired of this discrimination nonsense. More importantly, I think a lot of African Americans are getting tired of other African Americans crying wolf about discrimination.

Third, I want to make out with Tiffany Koon... :)
