Huly
Ok, We are not expierancing anything here in NOVA yet but in GA and NC two of my friends are having gas shortage issues. Rob in Ashville NC (one of my best friends) had this happen yesterday- Asheville is on rations. They can only get $5 at a time. Rob spent all yesterday afternoon driving around trying to fill up his car. JD (another one of my best friends) had this happen yesterday- In Atlanta GA This is so going to sound like one of those urban legends, unfortunately it is not. I just wanted to let you know that if you need gas get it quick!!! I just talked to my friend JD. As some of you know he works for a television news station and he just got information that we are being limited to 10 gallons of gas. If you need to fill up do not use your debit or credit card. He got gas at one station 10 gallons and then went down the street to the next one. When he tried to use his debit card it was declined, however when he used his credit card it was not. Those of you that know JD, know his debit card is NEVER declined. He said he has also heard that they may put a freeze on the sales of gas. He isn't sure that is true or not. If you have any questions, call me or e-mail me. Good luck!

I heard on the radio this morning that the Teamsters are protesting the gas prices. They apparently are going to shut down all the highways by just all parking next to eachother and not let traffic by. Take that for what it is worth, I only heard it on the radio, not a news station. It was Elliot in the morning on DC 101. I actually hope they do this. It would create a massive problem for motorists cought in the traffic jam, but something needs to get the governments attention! I voted for, and am for this administration, but they better get on this problem.
Huly
I agree 100%. This is a busy travel weekend but I am not going anywhere now. You do not know if you can get gas or not.
Sweet Sassy Molassy
Yeah, that's true. They're saying that we may be out of gas until Tuesday. I had to go fill up yesterday because people started panicking. And if I didn't get it yesterday, I would have to wait till Tuesday, since my car was already on E. But most of the places today are either out of gas, or they only have premium.
Dead Money
I just changed all my plans for this weekend because marine grade diesel just went to $4 a gallon and we use 600 gallons on a typical weekend. We have to change our charter rates to make up for it so our customers are all cancelling because we have had to add a "fuel surcharge". Well I'll be sitting at the dock drinking beer this weekend. Thanks Katrina.
Bugs'
I'm sure many here remember the gas crisis in the 70's...I was young but I remember sitting in a line at least a half mile long to get gas....I think we were allowed to get gas on Wednesdays.....I hope something like this is not in our near future....

Huly
Yes A lot of people will be on the roads and not able to get gas.
halter91
I'm glad I'm working at the bar and not heading to the moutains. It would cost me over a hundred bucks just in gas.
pez
You think this sucks.......wait til you see your heating bill this winter.... ...that's gonna suck even more... This wouldn't affect propane users would it?
kappaluvacee
What gets me about the gas shortage and price thing is this: If the Katrina affected our gas prices in 4 days, what is going on in Iraq? We've been there for 2 + years and we haven't seen gas relief at all?
Huly
Yes our gas bill will sky rocket!
SkinsNut73
This wouldn't affect propane users would it? You wouldn't think so, at least not at the same rate as heating oil... ...but I was thinking about that last night. We use a fireplace insert to heat our home for the most part, and I go through 5 cords of wood per winter...at $150 per cord. I was wondering if my wood guy would see the increase in gas pricing and jack up his prices
National Defense
he might try, but that is when you find a new wood guy.
riggins44
I had to wait in line to get gas last night. Went home and got my wife's car to fill it up. Used my debit card both times. Huly, I doubt your friend's debit card was denied because of purchasing gas. It could have been a quirk at that station. They may not have been accepting debit cards. Propane and natural gas will definitely go up. Heating your home this winter will be much higher. You'll see sale of buck stoves go up. Glad I have a charcoal and gas grill. Will be using the charcoal much more now.
GrapeApe
As petroleum and natural gas goes up, so will propane (it's a byproduct of those two). I thought I heard natural gas production would be particularly hit hard by this. But home heating is still a month or two away and things will hopefully settle down by then. From what I understand, this panic is because of the power outage to the pipelines feeding the eastern states. But they expected to get power to the pipeline by last night and have 60% capacity back fairly soon.
Huly
I just called ABC News to see if they had any info for people traveling this long weekend. They said that the DC Metro area should be ok and they are doing a story on this tonight. They are watching gas stations etc right now. They have not released any surplus gas as of yet. They stated anything south of the Metro area is in trouble. So if you are traveling you might run out of gas and not be able to find a place to get any. Nerm
From what I understand, one of the major problems from Katrina is that refineries were taken out of commission. Basically, we have plenty of oil but refineries are already running at full capacity so they cant take up the slack for the refineries that were taken out by Katrina. My question is, why are there not more refineries built in this country? Oil prices are high, but increasing the supply of oil does nothing for us if the oil can’t be refined into gas. Why haven’t more refineries been built over the past few years?
Cskin
This is only a temporary problem.... I expect the prices to ease next week. The problem is the "Plantation" and "Colonial" pipelines that provide gas to the East Coast. The Plantation line runs up the midatlantic through the Carolinas..... the Colonial line runs up and through the Ohio Valley. With the refineries down or with limited power, they're only able to push about 60% of full capacity up the pipeline. Additionally, the pipeline is designed to run the fastest when at full capacity.... so the gas will flow slower since the pipeline isn't full. Read the book "Over a Barrell..... how to break the oil cartel". A great book on the oil industry in the Middle East and how we're paying probably $2.50 to much for gasoline at TODAY'S hiked up prices.
Kilmer
Now I am not sure if I will travel to Indianapolis this weekend. It is only a 3 hour drive from Columbus, but I don't know if I want to pay $5 a gallon for a weekend trip. If you guys are having shortages there is a good chance that the Ohio Valley will have a shortage too.
