Marcus Washington diary

The Redskins' strongside linebacker talks about his expectations for the 2005 season:

"We were going through one of our offseason workouts, and one of our strength coaches, John "Mother" Dunn told me not to feel bad that I wasn't in as good a shape as last season. Everyone understood that I'd had surgery. I'm glad he said that to me because it motivated me.

I expect a lot out of myself. I like to feel I've been playing pretty well my whole career. Last year, I was put in position, given some opportunities, in Gregg Williams' system to make some plays, to utilize my abilities, which is rushing the passer and blitzing. I also think I got a little smarter and a little more experienced at recognizing what offenses are doing, and that and that made me a little quicker.

But I've got to give Coach Williams credit for putting me in great position, and my teammates rallied around me. You've got to produce and make plays. Last year, I was able to do that.

The reason I'm so motivated is that anybody can become No. 1. The hard part is staying No. 1 is even harder.

You don't ever want to get complacent and feel like you've made it. You want to keep doing the little things, keep doing the things that got you here. I want to be a team guy. I want to keep encouraging my teammates, not only verbally but by my actions on the field."

Yeah, like others have commented, this is the atitude Joe Gibbs loves.

When I heard comments about McCants that he didn't look good in practice I knew Joe Gibbs would not like his attitued. Joe expects committment and effort whether it is in a game, or on the practice field or in the class room.

Easy to see why Marcus is an all-pro and McCants is gone.
