jbooma
LOL Jbooma, YOU're telling me to be positive? What would you have me do--only bemoan the loss or start looking at what it takes to get a city to change its way of doing business? I look for JUSTICE, and if people lost their homes and businesses because of corrupt dealings in the city government(plenty of crime already comes from the NOPD) then that should be advertised, investigated and people should be sent to jail for a long time. How is grief and 'damn, that's terrible" positive and how is jbooma lecturing me on negativity? lol You look for justice   Ghost people lost their homes due to mother nature thats it, how you can blame the local government on that is beyond me. The pumps are not working because of the amount of water, they were not made to handle 10 to 20 feet of water on that large of a scale. If you want to get technical and point blame then point it at everyone because the lost of the wetlands over the years in fact weakened the buffer for a storm like this, had there been more wetlands in LA it might have not been as bad as it is. six4g
LOL Jbooma, YOU're telling me to be positive? Do you two have like a living will to disagree on every discussion or something? Damn, every forum I go to there seems be tit-for-tat going on. Let's just agree for a second that the situation in N.O. is just absolutely horrible, and a lot of people are suffering. Send you heart felt prayers and words of encouragement save the rest. JMHO
jbooma
this is pathetic: BREAKING NEWS Reports of shootings, carjackings and looting in the area near the Louisiana Superdome, New Orleans, a policeman tells CNN. More soon.
jbooma
The Mayor just said they were not able to stop the leak from the levee, the city will continue to flood to about 3 feet about sea level, since the city is already underwater this means the floodwaters will reach up to 10 feet and more at certain points. He is urging everyone to leave the city now. This is insane, and my heart goes out to everyone down there.
Posse81
Just got some pretty good news--a friend's family lives in St. Tammany parish, a NO suburb and they just saw their house. It's not liveable right now, but the damage didn't seem to be too bad. I don't think this is the end of NOLA by any means. It will take a LONG time to fix everything, but it'll be done. Those folks down there have been waiting for this to happen for a long time now.

TD_washingtonredskins
Saw that this morning on fox then they cut to this weeping man who said his house was torn in half and was trying to hang on to his wife who said she couldnt hang on and that her last words were take care of our kids and grandkids. That is one of the saddest accounts I've ever heard. I send my prayers down to the Gulf Coast!
China
this is pathetic:BREAKING NEWS Reports of shootings, carjackings and looting in the area near the Louisiana Superdome, New Orleans, a policeman tells CNN. More soon. I don't get it. If the city is flooded then where are they driving these cars? Where are they storing the looted material, underwater? I hope these people drown. Larry
I've been wondering about that, myself. The city's flooded, the water's contuniing to rise, there's only one road out of town that's not destroyed, and the military's taken that one over. So where do you expect to go with that new TV? Beaudry
The city I live in flooded in 1997. I can only slightly relate because our flooding was the slow creeping kind, not the giant hurricane storm. Still, the enitre city was evacuated for about a week or two. From my experience, I can tell you this: 1. The news exagerates everything to the highest degree. In my city we had one building start on fire for who knows why. They showed it on the news so much that it would like like the whole town had burned down. The same with the flooding. They showed the one area of town that was truely a mess with houses thrown off foundations, etc. That wasn't the case with most of the city. 2. The amount of $$ needed to fix all this is truely astronomical. Even if a building just got a little water, they still need to replace the carpets and sheetrock and anything that got wet. Safely estimate thousands of dollars for each family. Who knows how much insurance will cover. In my case, they built a huge dyke to protect from further floods. I can't remember how many millions that cost the federal government. They still haven't finished and our flood happened in the Spring of 1997. 3. New Orleans will be a real mess for a long long time. The streets here were littered with carpet, appliances, wet wood, sheetrock, etc. for a long time. 4. People up and leave. I lost my job because the business decided it wasn't worth opening back up again. Lots of people just moved away and never came back. It took a while for the population to get back where it was before. 5. Longterm effects still hit our city. Our housing market is warped now because the area that got hit hard was mostly entry-level housing. It's not even possible for home builders to make houses at that price range anymore just due to the increased cost of building materials. That will take another decade or so to naturally fix itself. jbooma
For any developers or builders here exactly how long can buildings stay underwater before they have to be condemned.
Larry
Oh, I'd bet you're right, Beaudry. If they can't get this thing fixed quick enough (and "quick enough" might well have been "yesterday", FAIK), then this is going to turn into a 9/11-style cleanup operation (I predict dumpster shortages for a year). Never mind the economic impact of all those people being unemployed for how long? While, no doubt, still being expected to keep up the mortgage payments on a place they're not allowed to even look at, which might be insured, but they're not going to see a dime from the insurance company for six months, (and if their policies are anything like my folks hurricane insurance on their beach house, the insurance will only pay for the cost of the house, not the land. Meaning their place may be worth $1M, but it's only insured for $125K.) A lot of businesses that're in there will have to find another location to operate out of for the interim, and six months from now they'll be wondering if they really want to spend the money to move back. If the city's economic output is up to pre-hurricane levels in a decade, I'll be surprised.
