2nd year for Taylor

Just an observation, but does anyone else think that Sean Taylor looks more human so far in the preseason? Last year he was lighting up the league with interceptions, fumbles, and bone crunching hits. Now I see him in on plays and making tackles, but he seems more human. Could this be a result of GW holding him back for the regular season? Could this be a result of a loss of 10 pounds in the offseason? Or, could this be due to distractions off the field?

This thread is not intended to be a doom and gloom prediction for the season. Just an observation ... what are your observations or thoughts on ST so far this preseason?

I also noticed that Taylor hasnt done a whole lot this preseason, and my theory on it may sound like that of a total homer, and maybe it is. I think Williams told him to take it easy, not play so hard, not run full speed into everyone like he does during the season. I think he wants Sean to save himself for the games that count. In the meantime perhaps he his working on the mental aspects of the game, working on improving his covering skills and field reading skills. I have seen Sean close to most of the tackles but not diving head first into them like last season. I think it will be a sight when he puts the mental work with the physical play on sept 11

I certainly hope so ... ST lit up Chicago last year ... I hope that this is just a case of not trying to do too much and lulling other teams into false confidence from watching tape of him this preseason.

I feel like the difference is that he simply played a lot more last preseason. He was wreaking havoc on all of the 2nd and 3rd stringers; he was way better than them...just like Mark Brunell this season. But maybe that was a bad comparison.

Also, I would have to say that teams now know who Sean Taylor is, and the role he plays in this elite defense. Sometimes as a DB, it's better not to have your name called.

Even more so, we have had a lot of talent to evaluate this preseason at the safety spot. At the Carolina game, Taylor didn't even start. And then he proceeded to nearly score on a blocked FG.

Also, he had some big plays in the Steelers' game. He had a great coverage play when Big Ben tried to go deep on him. Taylor did a textbook, turn-your-head defending of the pass. And, he nearly made an incredible leaping interception on another play.

Granted, I have seen him miss a couple sure tackles though. Maybe he simply needs to continue to catch up for the time he missed this offseason. But I'm not worried about the guy.

I actually think that he looks better this year. Last year he was taking the transition into the NFL and working with the 3rd and 2nd stringers if I remember correctly and simply playing with other players that were still in the "college" level. So it may seem that he isn't doing as much, when in reality he may just be the player that offenses are trying to avoid because of his playmaking ability. Trust me when his number is called upon he will lay people out again, and more ferociously, and I can't wait to see some Cowturds and Beagles on the ground after a nasty lick by our Sean Taylor!

I thought he gained 10 lbs, and came back in superb shape. I think he is still the caged animal that he always was with even more frustrations that will need to be released on the likes of T.O., Toomer, Moss, etc etc etc. If anything he has been humbled by his experiance and realizes he needs to straighten up or he is going to jail.

Sean Taylor is a gamer, when the bears come to town he will be all over the place. Let's also not forget that teams know about him this season. I havent seen one QB test him down the middle of the field besides the one cincinatti throw. Teams are running alot of corner routes and underneath stuff to avoid taylor.

No other safety in the league has the range and speed to make the pass defense he made at M&T Bank Stadium during the first Ravens scrimmage...beyond that, though, he's been quieter. I think everyone is right...he has nothing to prove, he's probably being told to focus on the mental aspects of the game, and he's going up against first-teamers now. Once Williams unleashes him, and Taylor gets the excitement of a game that counts, I think he'll be back to his old form.

bnacpa,

You're not the only one who's noticed. Sean has been very quiet indeed on the field so far. He's not flashed at all like last year, and in fact has shown up a few times overrunning ballcarriers badly.

Why this is is pure speculation at this point, but it merits watching. One hopes it's more a Samson thing resulting from trading in his studly #36 for the Deion-tainted #21 that he'll soon get over, than it is hints of a sophomore slump or distracted mind.

Look for a "whoo" hit or two Thursday just to make us look silly, now. :)

Having the off season he did.......the issues........the work outs.........the agent......I am wondering if he is just bidding his time......until...........

I prefer him to take it easy........and then light up some receivers when it counts.

relax. Taylor will be battling Williams and Dawkins to be a pro bowl safety in 2005.

yes, he came back quiet and contrite for all the trouble he has caused, even if that regret seems to be more by action than by any verbal apology to Gibbs or the team.

as the season starts I think you will see #21 make year 2 a memorable one.

let's face it.

in Gregg Williams' system safeties are EXPECTED to make plays. He isn't going to sit there and allow Taylor to hover back in coverage anonymously.

Agreed bulldog! Any question on how is he is going to play this year should have been answered by the footage of the Ravens scrimmage. The assassin mentality is there and will unleashed on Sunday, September 11.
