Meaningless stats? Perhaps but Wash O looks good in the preseason...

we threw the ball in preseason on purpose to help work out the kinks. the coaches know that we have two capable backs and a line that can open holes.

what I think the surprise will be for the Bears on opening day is HOW good the backs and line are and how much yardage the Skins get on the ground :)

I don't think they are meaningless... but people are perhaps reading into them more than they should. Our running game will be good though, and I think our passing game will have improved. (how could it not?) I don't see us as being the #2 O in the league though.

I'm just trying to make the point that all of the hand-wringing and gnashing of teeth about a missed pass here and there looks a bit silly considering our offense has performed so well this preseason...

The Steelers backed off the run a lot in that game on Friday. Teams won't have that luxury once Gibb's mixes the play calls for the regular season. If they don't put eight in the box to respect the run then we will hurt teams all season long. Ramsey has also been throwing into double and triple coverage. The reason is because that is the only option. Once the running game is released that double and triple will drop to single coverage where our speed will kill teams. I really don't think teams with lesser defenses are going to be able to keep with us this year. Oakland, KC and Denver are prime examples. Teams that have solid defenses can beat us if we make mistakes and leave our strong D out to dry. We go as the turnover ratio goes this season. We come up in the red we miss the playoffs. We come up in the black and we play meaningful games in January.

I don't think that anyone expects us to have the #2 O in the league. But it is a good sign, especially when you think about the fact that our offense last year in preseason resembled a lot of our offense from the following season. If the same remains true for this year, then that's a good thing.

The thing that I'm most encouraged about our offense this year is that we aren't doing the stupid little things that really screwed us last year. Very few penalties if you have noticed, almost no sacks. Those negative yardage plays destroyed us last year and I think it was due large in part to Spurriers mentality carrying over from the previous year. It looks like most of that is out of our system.

I really, really think we are going to suprise some people and I will giggle, yes giggle when the media starts jumping on the bandwagon.

I think they are meaningless in that they are no indication of how we will rank in the regular season.

What is meaningful, however, is that the ranking indicates how strongly Gibbs has been working the passing game. We are #2 in passing (10th in attempts) and 18th in rushing (19th in attempts). Clearly we are passing a lot more, and we are passing downfield a lot more.

I think certain specifics, such as the fact that we are 9th in passing attempts/game yet tied for first in sacks allowed could be telling (hopefully). But generally in the preseason we have no idea what the coaches are looking for, how much they game plan, how much they want to give away. I am pretty sure that Portis will be the focal point of our offense in the regular season, and he's hardly been on the field so far. It's really hard to gauge anything.

I bet there wasn't too many folks that thought we'd have the #1 D in the NFC last year either.

I must say I'm very encouraged by the performance against the Steelers. We dominated both sides of the ball. It wasn't even close. We kicked the Steelers' cans all over the field.

It could have, should have been much worse. If Ramsey had taken the sack instead of throwing the pick the score would have been 17-3. If he hadn't under-thrown 2 deep balls it would have been 24-3 or worse.

This is the Steelers we are talking about. A team known to be a tough, physical smash mouth team. They were totally out-classed.

From what I'm seeing: Strong O-line, DANGEROUS skill players on offense, Another Greg Williams defense, there is NO LIMIT to this team IF Ramsey steps up and plays. Hopefully he'll keep growing into his roll and gain more confidence with his increasing experience.

Hail to the Redskins (and those old guys coaching them)!

Just for kicks I looked up last season's pre-season rankings:

http://www.nfl.com/stats/teamsort/NFL/DEF-RUSHING/2004/pre

29th in total offense (28th pass/17th run)

9th in total defense (20th pass/5th run)

Discuss ...

Hmmm....well, if one were to extrapolate, he'd probably conclude that our defense won't be as dominant as last year - though far from bad. And that our offense is gonna kick some butt.

:D

Let me add that upon further research, on offense we were 8th in pass attempts and 1st in rush attempts last pre-season ... as we played 5 games.

Another interesting detail is that we are probably in the lower third of the league, in the preseason, for penalties. (Even though each penalty makes me gnash my teeth, or always seems to come at the worst time such as right after a 1st down completition.) That is pretty darn good, especially considering how many snaps our offense has taken.

Hey, it make be preseason, but imagine how many of us would be howling if we were in the lower-tier of the teams in offense so far?
