Brunell's Chances for Starting

Voice of Reason

Recommended Posts

This isn't a Ramsey vs. Brunell comparison thread. This thread is simply about what Gibbs will do, not necessarily should do, with the quarterback situation.

One part of me says that Gibbs will be loyal and stick with Ramsey. After all, each game has been a marked improvement for Ramsey, and he did just turn in 140 passing yards in one half against the league's number one defense.

Another part of me says that Gibbs will turn to Brunell. Ramsey played much better tonight, but most will agree that Brunell outplayed Ramsey in each of the three games, albeit against second string defenses. It's also no secret after the Brunell and Campbell acquisitions that Gibbs isn't fully sold on Ramsey.

So I ask, what are the chances that Gibbs goes with Brunell against the Ravens?

Zero. Ramsey starts and gets a fair chance. It's the Gibbs way. If he keeps improving, the job is his. I don't think he'll be given as much rope as Brunell was last year, because I think Gibbs believe this team, this year has a real chance to go deep, and he won't be as likely to ride it out.

What are the chances Gibbs goes with Brunell against the Ravens? Zip, zilch, nada. What are the chances he starts Brunell against Chicago? Same.

Despite some fans undying need for a quarterback controversy, Gibbs means to bring stability to the position and end the revolving door at QB. Like he did last year, Gibbs will only make one change at QB this season. Ramsey is our starter into the regular season unless he proves that he can't get it done. If that happens, Brunell is our starter for the rest of the year.

Gibbs can't and won't pull Ramsey during the preseason because it is clear to everyone that if Ramsey is pulled, his time in Washington is over. What if, like last year, Brunell starts the season and then falters? How can Gibbs replace him with Ramsey after he denied Patrick his chance to lead in the regular season like he promised?

That is why Brunell cannot be our starter until Ramsey proves himself a failure in the regular season when it counts. Gibbs means to bring stability to the revolving door at QB, and this my friend, is his means of doing it.

Actually, no, I'd only agree Mark outplayed Pat in the first game.

The last two? One is being given the ball and allowed to just play. The other is going downfield, downfield and downfield and experimenting with his mechanics. The other is racking up huge yardage totals while the other is throwing RB screens and the like and the occasional pass to an actual wideout.

So, no, Voice of Reason, you will continue to be wrong in this matter.

Biiiiiiing-OH.

Why is this not so damn obvious to everyone? Now, I'm not saying hands is saying Brunell should start. But just in the sense of this 'controversy' Ramsey would have to play like...oh Chad Pennington or Favre did tonight to be in danger.

And knowing that Brunell likely would falter(in terms of being a difference maker in the offense) how the hell could Joe go BACK to Patrick after not even giving him a nice fourth of the season(or more) to get in stride and earn the stripes for 2006?

Define "outplayed"

It's funny really. Whenever people would praise Ramsey's accuracy, others would discount it and say...they're short pass or dump offs....safe passes. But when Brunell makes those same passes (not against first stringers), they say he's looking/playing great.

I don't get it.

Well let me just say that if Gibbs intended Ramsey to be the quarterback of the future, we wouldn't have traded all our draft picks for the next ten years to get Jason Campbell. Gibbs isn't going to make this decision looking ahead to 2006. :2cents:

He hopes Ramsey will be the future, if not he got a rookie he likes. We all know Brunell can't be the future. Cambell is the future at QB for this team, the question is: will it be next year, or three to five years down the road?

Heaven forbid Gibbs make any long-term plans, just because he might not be here that long doesn't mean that he wont care or think about planning ahead.

Thank goodness we have a coach who thinks down the road, it's been awhile.

Gibbs expects to win every season and he knows he could need more than 1 good QB to do that consistently. When you expect to win now a 1st and 3rd next year are worth the pick this year. I think its a good thing that Gibbs doesn't expect to have a Top 5 pick next April.

What controversy?

:paranoid:

The one for Punter...

Ramsey did enough tonight to maintain the starting job, especially since he might see one series at most next week. I admit he has been getting progressively better, but there's still going to be a bit of breath-holding for me when I see him throw a long ball for the first couple regular-season games.
