stevenaa
You won't have to get a new computer. Take a deep breath and let me research.
TODD
Sounds like a spyware/virus problem... I've had it and reformatting my hard drive was the only solution. You might want to consider reformatting your hard drive so you don't have to buy another computer.

stevenaa
ccCommon message is part of norton installer. Symantec has a tool you can use to remove it when it won't uninstall. http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=sg&docid=2004102908033506&nsf=nav.nsf&view=5faa3ca6df6f549888256edd0061c0a4&dtype=∏=Norton%20AntiVirus&ver=2005&osv=&osv_lvl= Go to section 2 and follow the instructions to run the uninstall utility. stevenaa
Blondie, It sounds like you have spyware. A good spyware program may clean it up. You can download and run the Microsoft spyware removal tool from: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx If you don't have data on your computer, you can start fresh by booting from the restore CD that came with your computer. This will return it to the state it was in when you bought it. Anything you've installed since will have to be re-installed.
stevenaa
Try that link again Blondie, I had to fix it after it posted. It works now. Edit> I gues you already figured it out.

Blondie
YEAH!! Stevenaa........I did it!! OK. I need to reinstall it.......or I won't be protected. There are lots of directions to follow to install it again. I guess I have to do all of those things, right? Do I need to leave spy doctor off? stevenaa
I'm not too familiar with Spy doctor. I use the microsoft Anti spyware program and it is very good. Did you use the Symantec removal software to get it removed? Do you have a Symantec Install CD?
PCS
Spy Doctor is pretty similar to Spy sweeper. Work similar I believe. Fairly harmless programs and from what I've read, do not conflict with other programs like Norton. For what it's worth.
stevenaa
Thanks PCS. We don't see a lot of problems caused by Anti Spyware programs. Anti Virus software is another story. AV uses filter drivers that act on every I/O to and from the disk. So it can cause lots of problems.
PCS
My computer crashed last year because of a conflict between an upgrade of McAfee and Windows XP. Know that one.
stevenaa
It's very common to have application incompatabilities when the Operating System is upgraded. The Application vendors will usually have updates ready before the new OS releases to the public. But not always. Application upgrades "shouldn't" cause problems because the vendors should test them on the OS before the upgrades are released. But, practically speaking, there's so many millions of different systems with different configurations that it is really impossible for a software vendor to test an application in every scenerio it will be installed in. Blondie
Stevenaa, I have to reinstall Norton. Do I have to follow the directions on that link or can I just go back to my version? It says delete all temp files......which looks like it contains things I don't want to lose......I think. Can you look at the directions and tell me if I need to do that. I am hoping my computer does not get infected with something before I get it back on. Blondie
stevenaa
There shouldnt' be anything permanent in Temp Files, You should follow their instructions cleaning everything up, like deleting the temp files. Then you should be able to go back to your version.
Blondie
OK Steve........Norton back on and computer acting wonderfully. NOW, should I try to reinstall Spydoctor or some other spy wear?
