andavy
Over the years, there have been some guys that have come into the league and, based on their preseason play, you could tell that they would be special players - Randy Moss comes to mind. For the 'Skins, Sean Taylor last year and Fred Smoot stands out to me before that. However, there also were guys that seemed awesome in preseason and left you hopeful, but, for whatever reason, never made an impact during the regular season - Sultan McCollough comes to mind. Can you all think of any other preseason studs/busts?

McCullough looked very pedestrian when he was in in the first half but ruled in the 4th quarter against the lumber salesmen. Babe Laufenberg was the King of the Preseason 4th quarters. Grimm
I rememeber thinking James Thrash was going to be huge after returning two kicks for touchdowns in the 1997 preseason, in back to back games i think, he turned out to be a solid player but has only returned one kick for a td in the rest of his career. andavy
Babe Laufenberg was the King of the Preseason 4th quarters. Then ended his stellar 4 year career playing for 3 different teams, appearing in 16 games, completing 44% of his passes with 5 TDs and 11 INTs. jimster
it's not really fair to label some of these guys busts. - True, some aren't at the same talent level, but some need longer to develop. - The biggest example of this is Rich Gannon and Trent Green and to some degree Stephan Davis. Sultan needs to try to be a kick returner or something (like Chad Morton), because at his size it will be hard to make the team strictly as a RB. You're right, Jim. It's moreso those players that didn't meet the expectations set based on their preseason play. Even though some of these guys are playing against 3rd and 4th stringers, they impress you to the point where you say to yourself, "This guy looks really good! I'd bet he might make an impact if he played on the first squad."

I agree but it really bugs me when certain fans don't take into account who they are playing against and want our starters cut in favor of the 4th quarter preseason standouts. DB44
Darius Thompson or Dana Stubblefat - I know he was a probowler with SF, but that first year we had him, in preseason we were playing NE and he blew by a linemen and sacked the quarterback. We never saw that again. His biggest hit here was when he beat his wife. (Ouch, my apologies)

D'Pablo
Dana was a roid abuser, that might explain the drop off in production when the NFL adopted a more stringent drug policy.
