jimster
Madden, Wright Are Finalists for Hall of Fame http://sports.iwon.com/news/08242005/v9577.html Aug 24, 2:00 PM (ET) Email this Story CANTON, Ohio (AP) - John Madden, who coached the Oakland Raiders for a decade before becoming one of the NFLs best-known television personalities, was nominated Wednesday as a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, along with former Dallas Cowboys offensive tackle Rayfield Wright. The two, chosen by the Halls seniors committee, will be joined by 13 other candidates from the modern era. The vote for election will be on Feb. 4, 2006, the day before the Super Bowl in Detroit. Four to six from that group of 15 will be elected to next years class. Madden had a record of 112-39-7 with the Raiders between 1969 and 1978. His winning percentage of .739 is second among coaches with 100 or more wins behind Vince Lombardi at .750. Madden, whose team won the Super Bowl following the 1976 season, has the best regular-season percentage at .750. But he has gained even more fame as an analyst on NFL telecasts and more recently for the football video game that bears his name. "There are some people who still call me Coach, he said Wednesday. "But there are a lot of people who know me as an announcer. Then there are the youngsters who just call me Madden. Theyre the ones who know me only from the game. Wright, one of the premier left tackles of his day, played for Dallas from 1967-79 and was on two Super Bowl winners. He narrowly missed being elected in the regular phase of the voting two years ago, his last shot before going into the seniors pool. He played in six Pro Bowls and was All-Pro three times. "Im really happy, he said. "I'm speechless.
forbeskin
I don't know if he should go the hall of fame. Granted his win % is awesome, but 1 superbowl? Like the article said, a lot of people only know him because of the video game or announcing. What do yall think?

forbeskin
Love him or hate him, Madden is the face of football. I think he should be in the HOF ... He's the face of football for what he did after his career, not during. But he'll probably get in easily.
jimster
I think he should go in. - He was a 33 year old Linebackers coach when he was made Head Coach and has a 75% regular season win average, a superbowl, and I think a couple division titles, not to mention regularly in the playoffs. Clinton Portis
He deserves it. People who don't watch football still know Madden.

TheDane
Well, when it comes to the Fame of the NFL, certainly Madden is one of its poster child. Whether or not he's a handsome poster child, well... And no one can deny that the guy had on-field success as well. If he were nominated solely for his on-field success, I may be on the fence. But because he represents so much about the NFL, and is probably responsible for a portion of its popularity because of his skillful common man announcing ability, I would probably vote for him. Dirk Diggler
That's good. Let's get every player from the 70s Steelers and Cowboys into the Hall and 1 from the great Skins teams of the 80s. Nice!
RayLewis
Madden is a hall of famer easily, but the Hall of Fame accepts too many players, u should have to dominate an era to be a HOF, that why i dont think Brett Favre should be a HOF when he retires, he never dominated 90s or today, it always been Marino/Young and Manning/Donovan/Daunte and maybe michael vick someday if he averages a QB ratin over 85 and gets some incredible rushing stats. ArmchairRedskin
RayLewis, If you think Duante Culpepper and Donovan McNabb belong in the hall over Favre then you are seriously clueless. I would love to see any facts you have to support that opinion. Dominate? When has Culpepper dominated? McNabb dominated? When was this?
forbeskin
Farve or Daunte? Are you serious? Best stuff I've heard all day!

TheSteve
If you're going to say Favre shouldn't be in the HOF, then don't make yourself look like an idiot and say McNabb and Culpepper should go over him. They haven't dominated anything.
88Comrade2000
Farve belongs in the Hall. Heck, without him where would the Packers be? As for Madden- I thought he was already in? He definitely belongs. One thing is for sure, Monk won't be getting in next year. There's way to many higher profile people eligible and he;ll get crowded out. RayLewis
without Donovan and daunte where would vikings and eagles be? even on favres prime he was the never best. i didnt say donovan and daunte should be HOF either, i just said they were better then he was. Favre has had plenty of big moments but he hasnt done anythin that most great QBs havent done. Favre is one of the best in each era, but never THE best, and to be a HOF, u should have to be the best. And Daunte and donovan are just breakin into their primes anyway. Daunte had numbers like 40 TDs 10 INTs without randy moss. he may someday be HOF but as of today only QB who should be in HOF is Manning.
jimster
Brett Farve with the Packers: - Made playoffs 10 out of last 12 years - 6 Division Titles - 2 Superbowl appearences - 1 Superbowl Victory - 3 Straight League MVP's - 8 Pro Bowls - Holds NFL record for consecutive games started. ...you got to give credit where credit is due. TheSteve
Daunte had numbers like 40 TDs 10 INTs without randy moss. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Daunte has never played without Moss until THIS season. How could he have a 4/1 TD/INT ratio minus Moss for a season when every season he has played Moss has been with him?

MiamiDolphins13
It is about damn time. All this guy did was win, he lost in the playoffs when he had to face great teams like the Steelers, Chiefs and Dolphins of the 70's. But he went to 5 straight title games, had a terrific winning percentage, only coached for a few seasons and still dominated, won a Super Bowl. He should have been in a long time ago.
