See No Evil

This is a book by a former CIA case officer, Robert Baer, who some may remember was in Iraq in early 1995 helping the Kurds and Iraqi dissidents plan a coup against Saddam Hussien before Bill Clinton NSA pulled the plug 24 hours before the operation.

It really is a fascinating story about his career in the CIA from 1976 till he retired in 1997 and how the intelligence gathering business went down the tubes, in particular in the mid 1990s when we had very few sources to give us any intelligence.

The most interesting part of the book, was how he stumbled upon some of the campaign finance scandals the Clinton administration faced, and how bueracractic obstacles prevented him from "blowing" the whistle so to speak. His anger wasn't just reserved for Bill Clinton, he had very few things to say about GWB1 and Ronald Reagan, saying basically the operating instructions at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue are "Sweep the bad news such as Iran, Arafat, and Osama Bin Laden under the rug, get gobs of cash, and get re-elected"

This is a must read in my opinion if you want to see an insiders account into how our intelligence could have missed on 9/11 so bad, and could have miscalculated Iraq's WMD so awfully, and why he thinks it is going to be more of the same.
