Ancalagon the Black
You must drink your coffee at room temperature. Coffee coming fresh out of a Mr. Coffee can easily cause second degree burns if dumped on exposed skin. Same with Starbucks.I'd like to know, since you claim the coffee was "criminally hot", what was the law exactly? And what did McDonalds claim about their coffee that was false? How much surface area had third degree burns? A third degree burn is a deep tissue burn with blackened/browned surface. I suppose it's possible, but I'd like to see the report. McDonald's claimed that their coffee was maintained at restaurant standards--140 to 145 degrees. It was actually maintained at over 180 degrees. At this temperature, the liquid was legally a dangerous substance. The law prohibits restaurants from serving dangerous substances. McDonald's knew that its coffee was a dangerous substance, as previous customers had suffered second-degree burns from it. Third-degree burns (full thickness) were suffered on at least 6% of the victim's body. They covered everywhere you'd expect liquid to fall on in your lap area--genitals, thighs, and the like. She required hospitalization for almost a week. Keep in mind that she wasn't driving at the time, and the car was stopped during her opening of the coffee. Ancalagon the Black
But who would'a thunk that coffee could burn you?? Enough to put you in a hospital? And require skin grafting??
Sarge
I'm reminded of the Dice Man here, talking about fat chicks. "But I dropped 30 pounds!" "Yeah, it dropped from your stomach to your ass, Ooooo!"
Larry
Re: McDonalds I'd long thought that that was a clasic case of legal opportunism. But it was only about six months ago, here, that I read about the plaintiff's case. Aparantly the plaintiff alleged (and, according to the jury proved) that McDonalds wanted to switch to a cheaper coffee. Marketing tests showed that customers didn't like the coffee. Research also showed that, if the coffee was hot enough to burn, then people didn't notice the taste. McDonalds asked their legal department to look into their liability. Legal estimated that, if they switched to the cheaper coffee, and raised the temperature 20 degrees, then a certain number of people would be injured, but that only y injuries would be serious, and only z of those people injured would sue, and only w of those would win, and the average abount of damages awarded would be a. And they then calculated that the profits from the cheaper coffee would be bigger than the amount they'd have to pay to the people they injured. Funny that the liberal media didn't report those facts while the suit was going on. Nor did they report it later, when that case, and the (ficticous) huge award, were being used as a talking point to justify changing laws accross the country to make big businesses immune to punishment. rictus58
Obesity is up because they changed the standardsI am obese by the new guidelines and my son is classified as almost obese . I can promise you NO ONE could look at him and even THINK he was overweight. Now there are plenty of Butterballs out there, but these charts suck I'm 6'4'' and weigh 220lbs. One chart I looked at said that my ideal body weight was in the neighborhood of 190lbs. If I were 190, i'd look thinner than Lindsay Lohan. chomerics
It's in the news up here in New England, and everyone has the same sentament as down there. She should shut up and take the advice. The doctor offered an apology, and to take a sensitivity class, but she refused. Maybe if she put down the twinkees and stopped watching springer, she wouldn't have to deal with the fact that she will be a burdeon on our society 30 years form now. BTW, she is from the middle of Bush Country in NH, just wanted to get that out before someone started blaiming this on liberals.

If I were 190, i'd look thinner than Lindsay Lohan. That's the problem with a lot of these charts. They fail to take into acount your build, muscle mass, etcetera. While I certainly need to lose fat right now, I have a higher-than-average musculature. Because of that, combined with not drinking enough water at the time, the creatinine levels in my bloodstream (creatinine is a waste product) were almost high enough as someone experiencing kidney failure. This was about five years ago when I upped the amount of money in my life insurance policy. I'm still kicking, last I checked, with money kidneys... I had to fight tooth and nail to explain to them it was because of my physique. My muscles were putting out a lot more of this stuff than you'd see in the average person. It fortunately didn't affect my premium, but I had to explain to them I wasn't dying or in need of dialisys or anything like that.
big z
the doc just needs to learn how to be smooth about his concern for his patients. just ask them to self evaluate. he could have been like, "Ms. Smith, I really need you to be concerned about your own health, so I'm gonna ask you to look in the mirror, oh wait, let me go get the one for oversensative fat people in denial, such as yourself" you see the difference, she'd be charmed. she'd look up at the doctor lovingly, while finishing her box of the white powdered crack and say, THANKYOU Doctor! I can FINALLY see the light!!! well, that's great ms. smith, that one of us can, i mean, damn this is the last time i let them give me the small office with no windows...you ever think of skipping the drive-thru and just running through a car wash to get rid of the B.O.? Just a suggestion, here's your prescrip for gravy, 5 doses an hour as agreed upon. Now you don't have to go home, but you GOTS to get the fu out of here. Thanks and have a great day!!! TD_washingtonredskins
I think too many people have the mentality that they are not overweight, it's normal to be a bigger size. The fact is, this country has so many obese people now, that it's really very sad. Kids don't get exercise naturally anymore (playing outside, etc.) for the most part. I'm not sure what's caused it in adults...

I'm not sure what's caused it in adults... most fat adults were fat kids as well. you throw in stress, laziness, lack of time, and then add funny tv shows that take away the pain, comfy sofas, and a drivethru mentality of america, where Bigger is ALWAYS better....uh...yeah, can i have the bucket of fries, and can you double fry them, and just throw your industrial salt shaker in the bag, cuz i likes me some salt....and a McQuadrupleDouble with Bacon and Cheese.....yeah.....yeah, 8 slices....thankyou, i'll pull around........oh hey wait.....is your shake machine working? GSF
I take my kids down to the pool and there's fat people all over the place. What's really sad is all the fat kids running around. How a parent lets their kids get like that I'll never understand. I know there are some with medical issues, but with most people it's just as simple as poor diet and laziness. I don't blame the doctor for being blunt. Sometimes that is the only way to get through to people in denial, whether they have a weight problem, drinking problem, or whatever. My brother in law is a doctor, and he gets very frustrated trying to care for people who refuse to take care of themselves. He's blunt with patients sometimes, but he's never been sued, at least not yet.
big z
low self esteem can be contagious and as it so happens, transferred down to the kids. the only thing we, as a confident people can do, and i'm 6ft, 330 pounds mind you, is try not to judge, and then LEAD by example. :2cents:

GoCommiesGo
Thats ridiculous. The doctor comes out and tells her what she needs to do to live a healthier life and she complains. God forbid the man does his job and is honest about it.
troyster
I heard the doctor on the Today show this morning. He sounded a bit crazy. Very hyper and angry sounding. I'm not saying that she should sue him, because he did nothing to harm her. If she didn't like something he said, she's free to find another doctor, and that's money out of his pocket in the future. However, he was really stupid in how he tried to tell her to lose weight. Something about how being fat would make her husband find her less attractive, then she'd get divorced and never find anyone else.

troyster
I think I'd be a bit touchy too if I was potentially being sued for doing my job. Sure, behind closed doors. You'd act agitated and touchy on national television though? Probably not a good idea. I'd think acting like a professional (doctors are supposed to be professionals, right?) would help his case more. Neither was predicting the fattie's personal life in the way he did. He should have just told her how it affects her health, that's doing his job. She wasn't there for marriage counseling, that's not doing his job. Again, he shouldn't be getting sued, the lady should have just stopped seeing him and gone to another doctor if she didn't like his attitude. big z
well the premise that she should embrace her obstacles and accept the challenge to overcome them is valid. BUT, just maybe the doctor was a real jerk about it, and deserves this. Maybe the lawsuit gets thrown out, but i bet the doc learns a lesson.
