Lack of confidence? Or need for a true backup?

a lot has been made that Gibbs, for two years running, has been trying to find other quarterbacks to directly take the starting job away from Ramsey.

just a thought...i think in both cases (Brunell last year...Campbell this year), Gibbs was just looking for a decent alternative qb in case one goes down. it's becoming more and more apparent that you can't go into a season without having a legitimate #2 (just look at the Bears for proof). so, without a legitimate #2 last year, Gibbs brings in Brunell, with a chance to compete for the #1.

well, Brunell was SO BAD, Gibbs realized, for the second consecutive year, he had no reliable #2 backup...and he couldn't cut Brunell for cap reasons. so, with our cap limiting what we can do (thank you Coles, ), maybe Gibbs decided to try and bring in a more reliable backup via the draft. yeah, Gibbs doesn't have much faith in rookies, but given the limited options, it was the best he could do, save hope for a sudden phoenix-like rebirth of Brunell rising from the ashes. now Brunell is showing that suspect rebirth, and maybe he's a good-enough backup after all......and if Ramsey has a Brees-like year, the team has a real decision to make...but maybe it can make do by cutting Brunell on June 1, 2006 and keep both Ramsey and Campbell around as potential starters/backups?....a best-case scenario, i realize, but hey maybe Gibbs will then show all the nay-sayers that he know's what he's doing after all....

We don't know how well Ramsey will respond. If he does respond well, we don't know what his contract demands will be for a restructured deal. There is always the chance Ramsey departs because we can't agree to terms. It may very well be that Brunell and Campbell are our quarterbacks after 2005, you never know.

That said, the best scenario is for Ramsey to prove his worth and for #11 to continue to start while we bring along Jason Campbell. Then down the road Campbell either becomes the starter in '06 or more likely '07 or he comes in and plays well and then becomes a hot trade commodity.

Look back and see how much teams have given up to get qbs that play well for 5 or 6 games in relief.

Geez, if limited AJ Feely could fetch a #2 draft pick with his skills imagine what a truly talented NFL passer could rate in terms of compensation :D

If Brunell was that bad Gibbs would have cut him...

Anyone who claims that JG didn't/wouldn't cut Brunell because of the cap implications, refer to the LC situation.

Gibbs is a Brunell fan, and he is pleased with Mark's contribution to the team. (and at some point this season, my gut tells me that the Brunell bashers will eat crow)

So enough with the conspiracies... Campbell was drafted to be the QB of the future, Brunell has 1 maybe 2 seasons left... the same amount of time Ramsey has on his contract. Gibbs has a history of grooming QBs for about this amount of time before they see the field.

have to disagree with you on this......while the Coles situation does show Gibbs' willingness to release players that either can't cut it or don't want to be here (or both), even with a big cap hit as consequence, there is no way he could take two such hits in one year.....if we released Brunell, we'd have been over the cap more than likely, or at least unable to sign our draft picks. those consequences are just too severe, so we HAVE to keep brunell, for better or for worse, until at least mid-summer next year.

Gibbs has always been known to stockpile talent...He likes to keep his options open and guard against injury. Look back at his history it tells you all you need to know....He also doesnt like to be forced to start a QB before his time Campbell probably has at the minimum 2 years with a clipboard in his hands.

Well, I'm not sure how he could be pleased other than Mark's mentoring role with Patrick--it sure wasn't on the field (imagine if Ramsey came in and had those numbers! LOL)

As for eating crow, that isn't possible. THe predicitions and the attitude relate to last season. LAst season now exists in the record books and in our memories(and on tape!) If he comes in this year due to injury and plays well, god bless him. He owes us that from last year, but I doubt he'll be anything other than "OK" if he does play.
