With the Season Looming, Gibbs Is Fuming

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/08/20/AR2005082000912_2.html

Joe Gibbs was mad Friday night. He'd rarely been so mad since returning to run and coach the Redskins 19 months ago. But on the podium in the interview room under FedEx Field after the Redskins suffered another preseason loss, 24-17, to the Cincinnati Bengals, Gibbs had that angry glare few have seen since, well, you know when.

"He was mad -- I mean steaming -- and he let the players and everyone else know how he felt," said a staff member in the room after the Redskins plodded through another fruitless 60 minutes of mistake-filled football. That would include two drive-killing interceptions by Patrick Ramsey, a fumble by rookie Nehemiah Broughton that ended a possible game-tying touchdown drive with 1 minute 42 seconds left, and six penalties for 47 yards.

Patrick Ramsey's two interceptions Friday did not sit well with Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs. (By John Mcdonnell -- The Washington Post)

In the old days, mistakes of such magnitude and losing a game Gibbs obviously wanted to win might have caused him to throw chairs against the blackboard. That didn't happen Friday night, I'm told, but we're getting close. Real close.

"We're our own worst enemy," said Gibbs, not giving out any of those high-pitched cackles. "I don't like the way we're playing. We turn the ball over and commit penalties. We're making too many mistakes and need to play smart to win football games we're supposed to win. That's why we're here. To win."

Gibbs knows why his team was a disappointing 6-10 in 2004, and many of those same sloppy traits remain. They include key offensive mistakes at the worst times and not coming up with the big play when needed most. On defense, the first team has generally been good, but I don't yet see comparable replacements for cornerback Fred Smoot or middle linebacker Antonio Pierce.

Solutions: Gibbs watchers know he'll make changes if things don't improve, as he did nearly 20 years ago when he replaced Jay Schroeder with Doug Williams, and Williams with Mark Rypien two years later. Ramsey, gutsy and smart, knows this; so does the older and much-improved Mark Brunell.

Stay tuned.

Heads are going to roll, if this BS continues...We really need a poised, smart, qb, and whether he is currently on the roster remains to be seen...

It seems like in our QB's each has a trait or two that Gibbs likes but none is the complete package...

I will admit as much as I love Pram that Brunell and Campbell have more of the Gibbs traits, and this may be why Gibbs kept hope alive for Brunell all off-season by stating that he isnt done and that we were going to see him again and also why he seemingly just doesnt trust Ramsey...

The two int's that Rams threw were bad, but he showed some good things too. I think the author is nit picking when he puts penalty in the equation, especially because it's the second pre-season game. Alot of guys are still trying to win a job, so they are going to be nervous, and grab and hold. If Rams can continue what he did on Friday and not make the mistakes, then I think Joe will be real happy.....but then again this isn't his boy.

"but then again this isn't his boy." - Well said Boobie. I think that's been Joe's problem with Pram the whole time. Joe is under the national microscope and he magnifies that on his QB. I have said if Pat has an ounce of faith from the coaches and a little time to relax and stop looking over his shoulder he will be a very good QB in this league.

At this point, I really don't think it would be such a bad thing for Brunell to get a half or a quarter with the rest of the starting offense (for evaluation). I know we want Portis healthy, but you have to think that if he were in the game, it would put more pressure on the defense to respect the run. That, however, had nothing to do with the horrific look of Patricks INTs.

I guarantee you there will be one of two things after this game.

There will be 0 turnovers or there will be 0 players who did turn the ball over playing the following week :).

To get the message through in the cap era, it's harder to simply cut guys with promise or who cost a lot. But, you can dress them in street clothes and tell the team they are in street clothes because you don't trust them. Bet the message won't get through?

When I saw him throw his headset down and it bounced off of the ground I told myself "the team is in trouble" I was glad to see him upset. The two game they played he has been on the sideline with that facless look. checking everything out. Year one was getting your feet wet. Year two is putting your foot in someones a$$!!!

I can tell you now after watching that game, I told my wife that Coach was going to use the fear card now. We have players that seem to think things are just going to work out and don't appear to have that little extra motivation to improve. Can't really point anyone out, just the overall appearence of the team on the field.

Coach is raising the bar right now. Players better be ready.

Utah I think you are correct.

I remember when Gibbs first came back, someone asked him about his coaching style, and how to motivate players. He responded by saying there is a proper time for everything. Sometimes you have to be stoic and chill. Other times you have to light a fire under someone's a$$. However, he made it a point to say that you can't always be trying to yell, scream, cry as a coach because it then loses its value.

I have a feeling Gibbs is a great motivator, and he wasn't trying to motivate for a playoff push last year. This year, we will see a different Joe Gibbs I suspect.

Maybe this will spark the team and start playing like they should. I honestly beleive that we are one of the better teams in the NFL and if we start playing like that then we should have a great season and definitly be a force in the NFC East. I know that we have holes is some positions, but name one team in the entire league that doesn't. Teams that win are teams that yes, have talent, but more importantly make no mistakes and win those games in which their oppenents do. Gibbs is mad and I think that the attitude of our team is going to change.

And this is something this team has lacked for so long. Someone in charge who will get in its face and tell them to cut the crap or else! Bill Parcells did it with those great Giants teams. Jimmie Johnson did it with those (GULP!) great Cowboys teams. Players often tuned out Norv, Marty and Coach Superior. We FINALLY have someone in charge who's going to straighten things out and order people to take responsibility or else. I praise Coach Gibbs for this and I expect to see some results Friday night. Well done!

Joe Gibbs has now seen the new nfl era players-rich before they step on the filed to play one down, Gibbs must be a more of patton this year than the stoic landry father figure. We still have players with so sense of urgency to win football games and championships. U go Joe kick some butt.
