Assassin36
I thought Patrick played great last night, spare a few throws. I also think he made huge strides since the Carolina game. He looked significantly more comfortable in and out of the pocket. His deep balls looked much better! Brunell looked solid as well. He did not make any mistakes and made a few good throws and a few bad throws. I believe he made two bad passes that should have been TD's. I did notice a few striking differences between the two players last night, though: 1. Patrick probably directed 6 running plays in 25 snaps. Brunell was given the chance to mix it up a lot more often. 2. Patrick threw deep much more often than Mark. A lot of Brunell's yards came on short and intermediate passes. Come to think of it, did he complete a single pass over 20 yards? 3. Patrick was obviously instructed to throw everything long, it looked as if he completely ignored open dump off options. Do you think Marvin Lewis caught on?! 4. Patrick played against a solid, first-team defense that was coming after him! I think that too many people on this board think they know better than Joe Gibbs and should lay off a bit and be patient. Patrick looked better this week than the previous week. He has made more mistakes than Brunell but has also been asked to do a whole lot more on the field. Also, Patrick has played against two first-string defenses of two definite playoff teams! And it doesn't get any easier the next two weeks against the Steelers and Ravens. I expect Patrick to improve and throw 2 more INT's in the preseason. I also expect Brunell to play safe, mistake-free dump off, screen-pass, 10 yard out football and get more support from arm-chair quarterbacks. I've been a reader of this board for years and thought there was more football intelligence than what I have been reading!
Underwater Ally
I think your observations are correct. As I just posted in another thread, last night was the first time Gibbs has tried to go downfield with abandon. That signals a definite change in playcalling strategy. That combined with the fact that Gibbs is pretty much giving Ramsey the first half of these two games means that Gibbs sees the need for Ramsey and his recievers to develope chemistry and polish the long ball game. Overthrows and INTs are going to happen when you are doing that, but I like a lot of what I saw last night. Polish, consistency, and execution will come with a little more time and experience. As for coverage, yeah, Mark Brunell looked very good last night, but coverage definitely plays into that. Most of Brunell's throws came in the 4th quarter against guys who likely won't be making the team. Every passing play there were open recievers and it was obvious that the D couldn't cover. If you remember Patrick's first INT in the end zone, the pass was accurate and would have been right on the money had the defender not been right there in front of Thrash. That play demonstrates the importance of coverage in evaluating a QB. On that play, good coverage = interception, but if the coverage had sucked it would have been a TD. TD_washingtonredskins
Jeff Bostic (of all people) summed it up perfectly: When Ramsey is on, he's much better than Brunell, but when he's not, he's much worse. Ramsey made two or three throws that Brunell could never make. However, Brunell gives us a better chance of playing mistake-free. I think this QB position will come down to how Gibbs wants to play these games. Is he willing to take the bad with the good or does he want a steadier ride? No one knows at this point but him! :2cents:

I only saw a brief portion, but he seemed circumspect and hesitant to lay blame or judgement. He did say that we were our own worst enemy with turnovers, but he specified that he was referring to the team, not Ramsey. When reporters were prodding him to explain what Ramsey had done wrong he said something to the effect of "well we'll have to look at the tape to see, but I think we'll find that he did some good things out there too."
