Walking Deadman
I feel that losing Pierce was probably our biggest loss of the offseason, but we survived without Champ, Lavar, Bowen, Lott, Barrow and even Daniels last year. We'll survive without Pierce and Smoot-- despite the fact I liked both players and hope both do well with their new teams. As for MLB: I think Holdman, Marshall or Barrow will be perfectly fine. Just have to figure out who will be the guy. My biggest concern right now is the depth at CB....hopefully Rogers will progress with Brown, Wilds, Harkins etc.
scottb
To be honest, I would be happy if the Skins stayed in the top 10. The offense was so bad that opposing teams didn't have to play much catch-up. The loss of Smoot (mostly) and Pierce will hurt a little. The D won't be surprising anyone this year. Finally, although there were injuries to starters, most happend early (Barrow, Arrington) and were adapted to. I hope the injury bug isn't worse this season. Remember, Dallas fell from #1 to #25 and they were in the 2nd year under Parcells with most of the same personnel.
feeshta
Originally posted by THEHEREAFTER Ray Lewis is pretty good Ray Lewis is a better overall player, but not a better tackler. He has better speed than Barrow that's for sure. Brains wise I think they are close. Lewis can make up more ground than Barrow and that makes him a better player, but you don't rack up 177 tackles in a season when you are slow unless you don't miss much once you get there. See my point?

There is no mention of Holdman or Barrow to replace Pierce who was a backup himself last year. LA's knee will be ready by all reports and Harris is an above average CB who played well last year. I still believe this defense will be #1 in the NFC; although, it is easy to say we will move down on Defense since we were #1 in the NFC.
Neophyte
Originally posted by Beaudry Losing Smoot doesn't help this defense. How can you argue that losing Smoot and Pierce doesn't hurt the defense? I'm not sure anyone here is arguing that it doesn't hurt the Defense. It is more a case of us all having faith that had those two guys been absolutely necessary to the continued success of this Defense then Williams would have told Gibbs that and the team would have found a way to keep one or both. And no, Harris is not Smoot but lots of people said that about Springs and Bailey last year. I will take the year Springs had, thanks. Add to that Taylor having a year under his belt in this league (temper this news with his impending legal trouble though). Also add having Bowen back into this mix as he is better than either of the guys who filled in for him. Finally there is Rogers who might be better than Smoot (notice I said might) although probably not right away. And Marshall is not Pierce but Barrow is certainly as good and might be better if he gets healthy. Arrington is better than Marshall, of this there is no doubt. Holdman is more experienced backup than Marshall was/is if we have injuries. Then, just for grins, I will mention that all these guys will have the luxury of staying in the same system with the same coaching staff for a second year for the first time since before most of the current members of this board even knew about this board. I don't think that can be taken for granted at all. Might we be worse? Sure. But we also might be just as good or better.

I left out the LaVar part, but he was rather dutifully replaced by Lemar Marshall, another "who?" kind of player. Not to mention the injured players coming back this year. Nick Well Put! kennybizz
what utter garbage, this D will be top 10 ... bottom line... LaVar back, Taylor second year.. McCune will be special, this ain't your regular rookie. Rogers will be good to go, stress fracture ain't that bad. Smoots was the 2nd best corner.. and Pierce, he deserves the props and the contract he got. One thing Antonio has to realize... Gregg Williams won't be calling the D schemes for the G-Ladies. Will see... and what will see... is a 10-6 Skins team......Man, How are you guys coping??... Football is dead, nothing going on... Have a good one... Bigskinbauer
y is this hard to believe, he played through injuries, when we walked off the field last year against the vikings we only had 3 players that walked on with the bucs. Just think of it another way, just pertend we just traded for daniels bowen and arrington. to improve our D. That compensates for smoot and pierce.
