herrmag
Some of you may remember that a few months ago I started a thread about a job opportunity that I might be offered in Maui. I have done a phone interview, and they have now invited me out to their facility on Maui. I leave tomorrow. Fortunately, I am able to bring my girlfriend along as well, so we're turning it into a mini-vacation. So, if any of you are familiar with the area, and could give me some advice on what to do, I would appreciate it. I am only going to be there for four nights, so I would like to know what I should not miss (since I'll end up missing quite a bit given my short trip). I've read a few books and brochures, but I'd really like to know what the very best things to do/see are. Thanks!
Dead Money
If you're into mt biking at all do the mt biking thing from the top of mount (holly-ock-alla) its like 10,000 feet down and well worth the effort. Your hands may cramp from all the braking but its cool. We did a helicopter tour of the place too its a dormant volcano and it looks so much like the surface of the moon they trained astronauts up there! Thats pretty cool. Just driving around the island and taking picture was really cool. The cliffs along the NW coast are really amazing! There was a club at the Grand Waliea called Tsnami that was pretty killer when I was there in 1995 too! Have a great time! http://www.bikemaui.com/ http://www.bluehawaiian.com/photo.php?tid=2&hit=1 http://www.mauimenusonline.com/music.html
twa
The NW coast is amazing, although I would not recomend driving too far on the undeveloped stretch[my wife is still ****ing:laugh: ] We circled the Island despite the warnings. Go play in the shore break at Big beach with the locals,if you feel frisky[my neck is a inch shorter now] Personally I enjoyed the snorkleing at the SE and NW ends the most. Predicto
Haleakila is cool, but I wouldn't go there if I only had a couple of days. It is an all day trip up there. Go to the Ohlani (spelling?) pools north of Napili. (you might have them all to yourself) There is a good blowhole near there too. Check out the Io Valley in the middle of the west island. Take a snorkel boat trip out to Molokini crater. Eat at Alexander's Fish Fry in Kihei. See the windsurfing at HoKipa Beach. Get shave Ice in old Lahaina. Walk the hotel beach strips in Kaanapali and Wialeia. Visit their really nice little aquarium. It's hard to go wrong in Maui. Best guidebood I have found is Maui Revealed. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0971727902/qid=1119465328/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_ur_1/103-3060784-8459853?v=glance&s=books&n=507846
herrmag
Excellent guys, thanks for your help. Some of these I already had on my "to do" list, but some of them I didn't. Much appreciated.
The Evil Genius
Any recommendations for hotels in Kaanapali/Lahaina? We're honeymooning there (maui) in late October. And Lahaina/Kaanapali looks like our destination. Right now - trying to decide between Aston Mahana and Aston Kaanapali Shores. Anybody stay at either? PM me if you want. Thanks! ENJOY!! just came back from visiting Hawaii .. had a ball!! you will too!!
SonnyRules
Take the "Road to Hana" and visit the Seven Sacred Pools" - it is a series of 7 waterfalls making their way to the ocean.
Grumpy Vet
I lived in HI for the summers after my parents split up back in the late 80s. If it is still around - you need to have some Matsumoto's shaved ice. Stay away from Poi. I forget if it is the winward or wayward side of the island is the side that is not Honolulu....but the less travelled side of the island were Kanehoe is......was really nice. Tough to do it all in the short time you'll be there. Hanauma Bay was amazing....great snorkelling. The blowhole is pretty cool too. Hope you have fun.....make sure to get lei'd. My wife and I stayed at the Ritz Carlton at Kaanapali....We did some package deal that ended up not being all that expensive. Wherever you stay go and eat at the Plantation Golf Course where they hold the Mercedes Championship (the first tourny of each year). The food there is amazing along with the breathtaking view. I recommend the Westin in Kaanapali or the Kea Lani in Wailea. The Westin has an excellent beach and pool, and is cheaper than comparable hotels. The Kea Lani is more expensive, but it is very romantic and the rooms are all suites.

Westin is a little more than what we want to spend - yeah I know - its a honeymoon. But we got to stay within budget. Since we are there for a week - its already costing us almost 3 grand for air, hotel, and car. *sigh*

Borrow some money from the folks and go to the Kea Lani. You will get so much lovin' from the missus that it will be worth it.
