ArmchairRedskin
I think a little more respect for Madden is in order. Sure his "boom!" schtick is a little dated at this point, but the man coached a formidable Raiders team in his day and he can provide some really good insight into the game if you give him a chance. He and Summerall are an institution. Best team to ever call an NFL game. That being said, I'm a little sad to see MNF fall by the wayside. I will miss those games. MNF isn't dying, its just moving to ESPN. Read the whole article, man! As far as Madden deserving respect; why? I mean, if you don't like a guy's commentating abilities, why respect him? I mean, if you consider "Well the thing with Brett Favre is that he is really good at throwing the ball. That makes him an excellent quarterback." good insight into the game, then by all means keep watching!

I mean, some of the things he says make me cringe because they are so blatantly obvious. Its pretty ridiculous. But hey, if you're a card-carrying member of the Madden fan-club, more power to ya bro! ArmchairRedskin
If you actually listen to the man, who happened to COACH the game successfully, then you can tell that no matter how he coats it, he has insight that only a guy who understands the game inside and out can bring to the table. You can choose to focus on comments that he obviously panders to the casual fan with, or you can pay a little more attention and realize that he just gave you an inside look. The choice is yours, really.

Bang
The only problem is, armchair, is he rarely gives us any of tha insight. Usually he spends his time broadcasting to the lowest common denominator of his audience, namely those who just started watching football the day before. He does make idiotic comments, he does spend five minutes explaining why it's good to knock a guy backwards when making a block, he does spend entire segments between plays explaining offsides. Is it his fault? Probably not, he's been told how to do this. His job is to get people to watch MNF, not tell us anything special. To me, I don't really care. i have found it to be immensely enjoyable to pay NFL.com their 35 bucks a year and gain access to all the local radio play by play. It's infinitely better, the insights are deep and real, because those guys spend an entire season with the team, not just the 48 hours leading up to the broadcast. They know the team, not just what they've read on a ready-sheet. Usually I turn Madden down. And it's true,,, get a pen and paper next time he does ANY game, and make a tally mark every time he says "Brett Favre" or "Tom Brady". You'll be amazed. I get a kick out of how many folks hold him up as the God of Football. Seriously, his insights are so watered down, it's barely worth hearing, especially when you hear it week in and week out. Watching a fat guy eat a hot dog? Telling me about an offensive lineman's sweat marks on his ass? Let's see if we can spot the difference here. Dennis Miller; Wel, you know Beano, that play reminded me of a couple of Phoenecians wrestling with the Sun God , that play was doomed from the start,, it looked like the Battle of Hastings out there! John Madden: Well, y'know Al, it's usually best if the QB throws the ball before he is hit, and I always liked it best when the receiver then caught it, Hey! Look, there's a fat guy with a hot dog! Boy you know, you gotta smear the mustard in there, and you gotta get it all in there an, y;know, there';s nothin' better than a hot dog when you're a fat guy..." What's the difference? OK< time's up, I'll tell you. One guy's jokes are corny, but i have to think for a second to realize how corny they are. The other guy's jokes are corny, but stupid enough that I don't have to think about it. the question is,, who will they pair Madden with? Dick Enberg? That might be interesting. Enberg's always been good, if a little excitable. Marv Albert? I can handle Joe Theismann on MNF. I know some folks think he's a blowhard, and he is, but he at least gives me REAL insight into the game. Even if he is telling me something I know, he doesn't talk down to me like Madden does. Theismann broadcasts as if you have a bit of understanding about the game. That I like. I like Mike Patrick, too. I think he gets excited pretty easy, but he manages to keep the game rolling along in the booth rather well. Paul McGuire is a clown. While you have your pen and paper out for tally marks on Madden, make one every time Paul opens a sentence with "Boy I tellya.." and then make another one every time Paul makes a play seem as if it is the greatest thing he's ever seen (He'll even use those words 6 or 7 times a game). Boy, I gotta tell ya, Joe, that was the best incomplete pass I ever saw, marvelous! 3rd and 6! ~Bang

Boy, I gotta tell ya, Joe, that was the best incomplete pass I ever saw, marvelous! 3rd and 6! ~Bang Excellent post, despite the grammar and spelling mistakes (for which I’m a Nazi.) Your reputation precedes you, Bang and your banter exceeds expectations. Bravo and here are a few friendly comments. I think we can absolutely blame Madden for the pointless pontification he spews over broadcast television. I’m sure ABC gives him some commentary pointers and such but since he has such clout they’re probably simple for him to ignore. Can you imagine some production assistant going up to JOHN MADDEN and saying: “Mr. Madden, sir, we’ve put three inches of make-up on your face to hide the fact that you’re 653 years old. Could you please raise the intelligence level of your commentating? The U.S. Education Department is finding that Americans are becoming dumber by listening to you on Monday nights.” Madden has the final call on what he says over the air and the fact that his observations are at a second grade level is no one’s fault but his own. Also, I don’t think it is his job to get football fans to watch football on Monday nights. I think it is the responsibility of the league, teams and players to get fans to watch MNF because people are tuning in to WATCH football not LISTEN to John Madden. Teams (Players, coaches and the etc.) know that they're being broadcast (not piped over paid cable, yet) nationwide on Monday nights, so they step up their game and the football is typically more intense. Most people tend to enjoy professional spoken insight while consuming the game visually (ever tried to watch a game with no commenting/sound?) Little upsets me more when watching football then to have an intense Monday night game ruined by the musings of a man my three year old niece could outwit. Yes John, it is a good idea for the running back to run forward, go put some more makeup on your face. While you’re away please let Al Michaels actually inform the viewing public about some of the more subtle activities concerning the field of play and this fine game. No? You want to talk about the guy who is eating nachos? Thanks guy. I was not aware that NFL.com offered internet radio broadcasts of games; I usually turn off the TV’s commentary and try to find a free radio site over the web or on a higher band broadcast station (AM/FM instead of UHF/VHF.) For ‘Skins games I just turn on Sunny Jurgensen, radio commentary is clearly superior to television. That is why I love the big play highlights on Sports Center when they play the crazed radio announcer over the television images (and commentators.) Hopefully they’ll pair Madden and his broadcasting career with six feet of dirt. My prayer is that they keep Al Michaels on the show. They can bring in almost anyone else but just need to let Al run the program.

mookie0720
At this point Madden is nothing but a figure head. He's no longer a good announcer, and he's no longer insightful. His name is the reason for this move, that's it.
illone
His commentary is pretty bad, but some of it is just funny. My friends and I call them Maddenisms. We actually spend a good amount of time on Monday night making up our own Maddenisms. You should try it sometime. That said, I think he is still good for the sport. There are no truly "great" commentators and at least Madden is entertaining. It will be weird not having him on MNF.
