NEW YORK (AP) - John Madden is joining NBC as a game analyst for the network's newly acquired "Sunday Night Football," a network source told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The network scheduled an afternoon teleconference with Madden to make the announcement that he will join NBC when it begins televising football in the 2006 season, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Madden has spent the past three seasons teamed with Al Michaels on ABC's now-defunct "Monday Night Football."

Before joining ABC, Madden teamed with Pat Summerall to call Fox's lead game from 1994-2001. They were the top NFL announcing team on CBS for 13 seasons before that.

Known for his folksy style and his love of football's grit and grime, Madden has won 14 Sports Emmys.

The former Oakland Raiders coach - he led them to a win over Minnesota in the 1977 Super Bowl - has become a pop-culture phenomenon thanks in large part to the popularity of his video game "Madden NFL Football." Since its initial release in 1989, the game has sold more than 43 million copies and become the No. 1 selling sports video game of all time.

NBC is reportedly paying $600 million for a six-year contract that will allow the network to broadcast the NFL's Sunday night game starting with the 2006 season. The Sunday night game was previously shown on ESPN, which will now televise "Monday Night Football."

NBC also gets two first-round playoff games and the Super Bowl in 2009 and 2012 as part of the deal.

Darn it! I was hoping Madden was going to go from ABC to RIP.

I can't stand the man or his commentating. His insights are geared toward four year olds. Statements like "Now this guy is the center, his first job is to hike the football" just demonstrate how the man is probably mildly mentally retarded. He might as well sit there and say things like "The sun, it rises in the east and then sets in the west, that is what the sun does" because it is just as insightful as the remarks he makes about football.

Football without Madden doesn't seem right. I don't care what anyone says who else would come up w/ the term "Cankle"?

John: "Good lineman have Cankles, not calf and ankle"

Al : "What exactly is a Cankle?"

John: "It's when you don't have a calf or an ankle but just one continous muscle"

God love em.

Stuff like that was funny when I was thirteen and in seventh grade. I'd do stuff similar to that like name part of my anatomy my "'taint." Because "'taint quite my nut sack, ‘taint quite my ass crack!" and we all thought it was funny, when we were thirteen. But I've grown up since then and word mergers like that are just no longer amusing. That is why Madden must leave television and all sports commentating forever.

still sucks, even if it is for 2006. Was always nice having MNF around on local channels. Kinda an end of an era I guess.

Now, why would they keep Madden? I especially love his commentary in the video game...

Its a great move for NBC. They were really stung by the loss of the NFL and tried their best to fill the void with the defunct XFL and the AFL. I expect the AFL to stay on NBC (Sweet revenue sharing deal) and increase in value when the NFL lands back there. For credibility, NBC needed a big name and they got the biggest (like it or not). It will be interesting to see who they pair him with. Who would make the best partner? Eli Gold perhaps. He is very professional and has football background with Alabama. He's also done some AFL on TNN and now on NBC. He has a sense of humor too, which I think would fit well with Madden.

I really like the Sunday night crew. I hope they do Monday nights. Mike Patrick is my favorite play by play guy.

I agree. - I'd like to see Mike Patrick, Theisman and maybe a former defensive player from this era to add some different perspective.
