Waleo32
I don't know about all of you, but I'm sick of the media bashing athletes when the do something that they deam negative. How come they never talk about Randy Moss donating Millions to mentally changed kids, or inviting them to Vikings games. But no they talk about a stupid mooning shot. Or even quick to call people thugs like Shawn Taylor and others. The media, nor I have the right to call him that. It's funny to me when I black guy doe something wrong he's portrayed as a thug. Or is it just me?
Kilmer17
Actually, Im sick and tired of the media elevating athletes to some sort of Godlike level in society. I welcome the media calling them out when they act like thugs.
Dead Money
Kilmer I agree.. but not just athletes, all entertainers. Do you know the last two nights the tease from the local news was Sunday night "Michael jackson hospitalized" and monday night "Russell Crows goes berzerk." Like I could give two :pooh: 's ... Thats what they tease you with to get you to watch "The News"? I haven't watch the local news in ages. If I wanted to know about that stuff I'd watch E! Sometimes its so nice to have tivo.
Mr. S
It is true, we dont hear about good things that athletes do...wait, so that means Darrell Green is not doing anything? Almost everyone knows about his charitable organizations. I am going to assume you are implying Taylor as well, and so far, the evidence is against Taylor. However, that seems to be changing. Randy Moss, he may have donated whatever, but look at his character on the field. Why was Minnesota willing to get rid of him despite extending his contract within the last 2 seasons I believe. Not to question Moss's motives on his donations, but there are tax breaks for donations, as well as different income brackets... Yes, we do elevate athletes and actors to God-like status. They tend to get away with many things as it is. That will not change though while most people still worship these people.

I agree but there is always a lot of emphasis on Warrick Dunn and all of his charitites and stuff and every sunday and Monday night they go into at least one players good deeds. The problem lies in the fact that these athletes are supposed to be role models and when they act like common criminals it sets a bad standard whether you like it or not people who are raised to the celebrity status are viewed differently, held to a higher standard.. It comes with the territory, if they don't like then retire. Most have already made more then we ever will in a lifetime.

Destino
No matter how you feel about athletes the bottom line is that media doesn't give as much attention to good news as it should. Hell the act of reporting on the many charitable activities athletes engage in, would by itself grant these organizations free publicity possibly raising their support and increasing their ability to do a lot of good. Such a positive outcome is win win no matter how you feel about the star in question. I loved Sarah Mclachlan's video "World on Fire" for this very reason. It helps get the message out that you and everyone else CAN make a HUGE difference. (If you haven't seen the video you can watch it here.) Point is, a little news about the good in the world won't hurt. Ya dig?

Commander PK
The problem is not just the media. America CRAVES celebrity. They look at athletes, musicians, acters, and other entertainers that provide a "diversion" in society, and place them up on pedestals. The reason the media is always talking about these people, negatively and postively, is because that's what America WANTS to hear. I believe the reason for that is that most Americans are bored to death with their own lives, and long to live like the rich and famous. airborneskins
What did you expect me not to put my :2cents: in? It is not only the athletes that this happens too. If you look at the news, How many "good deeds" do you see coming out of Iraq? That's right hardly any. But as soon as somebody shoots a guy that he felt threatened him, Guess what it is all over the news.. I guess the bottom line is Good news doesn't make ratings.. the bad News will boost your ratings. Just my :2cents:
Bang
Originally posted by Painkiller The problem is not just the media. America CRAVES celebrity. Yes we do,, and we crave watching them fall on their face even more. It seems to me that when someone does make a mistake, it is certainly amplified beyond ridiculous levels.. and I'm not necessarily talking about crimes being committed,, anything in general that can embarrass someone else and remind people that someone else is having a worse day than they are, is eaten up. ~Bang

I've seen this - it's a great illustration of how money can literally mean life and death to people across the world.
