Williams' return to Dolphins hits a snag

Ricky Williams' return to the Miami Dolphins has been put on hold until agent Leigh Steinberg can hammer out monetary terms with the team, according to The Miami Herald.

The Herald reports that Williams, who abruptly retired before last season, does not want to play for the league minimum of $540,000 and is asking for $3.7 million in base salary. And that difference could have a big impact on whether Williams is with the team by late July when the Dolphins begin training camp.

But the $3.7 million figure is well beyond what the Dolphins can support with the salary cap, and Williams will not return until a fair compromise is worked out.

"I don't see Ricky playing for that ($540,000) figure," Steinberg said.

The Herald spoke with several attorneys about the language in Williams' contract, which was renegotiated in 2002, and their opinions were mixed. Two attorneys said the Dolphins owe Williams $3.7 million. Two feel the team could pay him the $540,000, and one suggested that arbitration might be the best solution simply because there is room for debate on both sides.

The NFL players association, meanwhile, said the union would defend Williams' contract if the case goes to arbitration. But Dolphins' vice president Bryan Wiedmeier, who oversees player contract negotiations, refused to discuss the situation.

Training camp is tentatively set to begin July 24. But Williams faces a one-year suspension if he returns prior to the 27th.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello reiterated the one-year suspension rule, but sources told The Herald the league is expected to forgive Williams a few days if he is cooperative.

What difference does it make what they are going to pay him ?

Seems to me that he is not under contract since he "retired" , meaning that the Dolphins have the rights to him but he isnt actually under any contract. Kinda like San Diego (? Bought the rights I believe) had when Deion retired from the Redskins.

He is trade bait more than anything at this point. The Dolphins just want him to come so they can get some compensation in a trade. IMO.

He's not asking for the $3.7 million (even though that might be what he is legally owed). He wants a fair deal, not the vet. minimum. $540,000 a year, for the rest of his contract, which is what the Dolphins are currently offering is ludicrous.

There are legal issues here. When/If he comes back he is still under contract as if last year never happened. There is language in the contract that states that if he is in breach the team only owes him the minimum, BUT, if he reports to camp he is no longer in breach.

In any case, his asking for more than the minimum is not at all unreasonable

Actually he is still under contract. What happened when he 'retired' was that his contract sort of got put on hold. Essentially what happens is that this year counts as last year per the terms of the deal. So the question is whether the fins have to pay him as per his contract or whether they can force him to play for several more years at the vet minimum (no incentives I might add) untill the original contract expires. There will likely be arbitration or a deal worked out.

I sure as hell wouldn't take him back for more than 1 mill base. 3.7 are you ****tin me... The dude quit on his team automatically turn them into one of the worst teams in the NFL. Most teams wouldn't even take him back. Since it's a new coach he's considering it, he only wants compensation. Whats to keep him from getting another paycheck then doing the same thing again to another team. CALISKINS I san't believe you are defending his asking for more money. A fair contract. Is quitting "fair" to you, NOOO so why should he get a fair contract.
