I don't see EB having more red flags than Carson Freaking Wentz. The Wentz trade brought a lot of criticism from most people who weight in on the trade, criticism that obviously turned out to be valid. I have heard no such criticism on the hiring of EB. He is very well regarded and I think that was a great hire. I wish I shared the optimism on Sam Howell, I really do. But this is such a long shot, even with a good OL.
16 teams interviewed him and passed on him. That's a red flag inasmuch as it was a red flag that Wentz was on his 3rd team in three years. The other huge red flag is how terrible the only offense he was solely in control of looked when he was Colorado's offensive coordinator. The reason you didn't hear the same amount of criticism on the hiring of EB is because the national media has been pounding the table for this guy to get a head coaching job for the last 4 years or so whereas Wentz was the punching bag for a lot of the national media.

Sometimes I think because many here like Howell a lot and don’t view him as a typical 5th round QB (all fair and well supported), they forget how utterly insane it is in a vacuum that a probable lame duck coaching staff with a new OC is pushing all their chips in on a guy like Howell. It’s crazy. If it doesn’t work and he gets crushed every week or just sucks or throws 17 INT the entire world is going to look back and say “uhh no doy”. I don’t think that’s going to happen, but it’s within the realm of reasonable outcomes. So trepidation and fear that we’re about to look like fools like we almost always do with our chosen QB solution is understandable imo.
It's bizarre to me that certain fans will not even entertain this as a possibility. And it has nothing to do with turning on Howell or disliking him. It's reality.

But the starter is a young QB and we are installing a new system. He’s not going to look like prime Joe Montana.
I don't think he should. I also don't think grandiose expectations (like making the playoffs and winning a game) should be placed on him this year.

This is the other factor that a lot of people are ignoring this offseason. This guy has more red flags than Wentz did last year. It very well could end up being a disaster; which is a terrible thing for Howell's development.

I get the vibe listening to reporters, and my own observations from the one practice I watched, that Howell isn't having a totally smooth camp. Not great. Not bad.
Eerily reminiscent of last year's training camp.

His boneheaded decision to leak the Gruden e-mails to the New York Times, which ultimately led to his selling of the team is the only good thing I can think of that he did.

The cancer that killed the Redskins will be removed today. I'm not necessarily happy because what I once loved was killed years ago and is never coming back. But once Rivera and every single hint of that cancer is removed, I'll be optimistic under Josh Harris.

The 24 year nightmare is finally over. This is such a weird feeling. I never thought he would sell. There is no doubt in my mind that when trying to make Tanya the face of the organization, and when she was booed loudly by the fans, that she was the one who realized it was time to pack it up and was the driving force in getting Dan to sell the team.

I think people are overrating Brissett. He's a solid game manager, but Howell's ceiling is much higher.
It's crazy to me. He's gotten the chance to be the guy twice with the Colts. Both times were average at best. Team immediately had a winning record when Luck was healthy and when they revived Philip Rivers for one final season. I hope we only see him in the preseason.

Though in this case that was because he literally lost every weapon around him and had to carry the entire offense by himself.
In 2019 he had 39 total touchdowns. In 2020 he had 35. In 2021 he had 35. He jumped in rushing touchdowns in his last year because as you said, he was carrying the offense. The "he was playing inconsistent" never made any sense to me. Corral was consistently rated higher than Howell going into the draft but when he played in the preseason against Washington's 3rd stringers, he looked completely lost. Howell never did.

I wonder how much of the failure rate of QBs is the impatience to develop them. Obviously a later round pick doesn’t get the amount of chances as a high pick.
I also wonder if Howell falling into their laps in the 5th was more because they had Wentz and his massive salary already on the roster come draft time. They could have had him rated much higher and taken him earlier. He kind of alluded to that in the past after the draft:

The whole, "this QB was taken in the 5th round is enough evidence that he's no good" talk is starting to get tiresome.
I would take Brock Purdy (7th), Gardner Minshew (6th), Mike White (5th) over Zach Wilson (1st), Trey Lance (1st), Drew Lock (2nd), Will Grier (3rd), Baker Mayfield (1st), Sam Darnold (1st), Josh Rosen (1st)...you get the picture. The "most late round quarterbacks don't develop into franchise qbs" can also be argued that most 1st rounders don't either. It's a gamble. Dak Prescott was 5 selections away from being a 5th rounder.

I like Standig but listening to him just now on Sheehan’s show, he is so over the top negative about the QB situation.
Apparently, Kyle Trask is more intriguing this season because he was taken in the 2nd round versus Howell in the 5th. Atlanta’s situation at least as good because Ridder was taken earlier,
If Howell plays well in spite of this apparent stigma with some of him being drafted in the 5th round it will be a miracle 😀
Standing and Sheehan seem to be the only ones locally who think this situation is a bad one. Most others think Howell's a question mark but believe in the potential. Nationally, almost every person I've seen believes Brissett came here because this is the easiest place to win a starting job.

Ron can give a rats ass about Howell... he is in full "save his a$$" job mode. Meaning he needs a legit QB that has a high chance of winning games if Howell looks like poo.
He should probably go to the draft if he doesn't believe in Howell.

I seriously doubt this happens, but if it does, it could mean one of the top 4 QB prospects could slide to #16.

Anyway, I'm thinking what I see per on field play re: Sam and Brissett looking like a real improvement over the last few years with another worthwhile body being added to the qb room via the draft, hopefully.
The bolded is the wildcard in this scenario. Do they trade up in round 1 to take a guy? Someone in the 2nd or even 3rd? I would say then you've got really strong potential in the QB room. If they add a late round Nate Sudfeld type, I'm still feeling 'meh' with Howell being a huge question mark still.
6 minutes ago, Jumbo said:I would first suggest that even if Brissett beats out Sam initially it isn't automatically some disaster. It isn't our ideal or most hopeful scenario but it isn't necessarily a long term crippling indictment of Howell.
I don't think it's some finality to Howell that means he's going to be a bust and won't be worth trying to develop, but it would raise alarm bells.

Paulsen summed up my thoughts better than I ever could, key difference being I don't "love" the Brissett signing. It's okay to me:

This is where I'm at. I am extremely optimistic about the future of this team now that the cancer has been removed. But his fingerprints are still on this team going into this year and until those fingerprints are gone, I can't get hyped about the upcoming season like others.
