  1. I wonder who EB would rather start, SH or JB? Personally I would think the safer bet would be with SH. If it works out he looks great and either gets a HC job next year somewhere else or maybe stays @ WASH and becomes the eventual RR HC successor. Even if the end of the year offensive stats look halfway decent (say WASH offense is rated between 13-20) that's far better than what they had before and EB would have done it with a totally unproven QB. Maybe JB will surprise us. Maybe he'll be the next coming of Geno Smith but its unlikely. He's had more than enough time to hit his ceiling so I think what JB is now is what he is. I think he's servicable but he's not going to win games in the clutch, he's not going to put a team on his back and he's not going to make the players around him better. He's mediocre (which is fine for a backup) and WASH has lived in the land of mediocre for the past 30 years. I find it very doubtful that WASH will be able to beat out the Giants for third place in the division let alone leapfrog over Dallas or Philly.
  2. Actually, I am surprised the RR made the QB decisions he made even though he is a defensive minded coach. RR has constantly tried to validate his personnel decisions while being the Team President here @ WASH by harkening back to what he did in Carolina. What RR did was he took over a crap team that had a high draft pick. He then drafted Newton, had him on a relatively cheap rookie QB contract and rode with him until his wheels fell off. That strategy proved to be relatively successful. He got fired from Caronlina specifically because of CN's injuries and a lack a decent backup replacement which led to losing games. Losing Newton to injuries and having little QB talent to fall back on should have revalidated to RR why it's so important to get talented QB in place as quickly as possible. I will add that it didn't help that Newton went down due to injuries the same season that Carolina got new ownership and RR became the scape goat. RR then comes here and it is literally a mirror image to the start of his Carolina career: Crap team in need of a rebuild, ownership of a high draft choice and a team without a good QB on the roster. So, what does RR do? He drafts a DE with the #2 pick. The effect that a QB has on a team is way larger than what a DE has on a team. Why he didn't replicate his Carolina QB drafting experience when first taking over the WRs is a mystery. The only thing I can think of is that he didn't want to piss off Synder because DH was hand picked by him during the previous draft. Personally that experience with Synder directly interferring with the draft selection should have sent RR running for the hills. Regardless draft scouts all over the league (including WR scouts) were really unimpressed with the DH pick. Internally the VP of Player Personnel (Kyle Smith) and all the WR scouts were really pissed off regarding Synder's interference during the 2020 draft. RR could have easily used this as a reason alone to move on from DH but he choose not to. I'm sure, if RR cared to ask, there were red flags regarding DH's maturity/talent that reared its head during DH's rookie season but since his rookie season was a team-wide giant cluster any issues that DH exhibited were probably low on everyone's radar. Regardless, the formula to create a winning NFL team is pretty simple and clear: Fielding a winning, competetive team = having a good to great QB. Fielding a mediocre teams = average to poor QB. The best you can hope for sometimes is having a really bad team (which RR had when he took over the WRs). Then at least you have the opportunity to draft a quality rookie QB which hopefully, can turn a team into a consistant competitive playoff team for years to come. Regardless, RR is going to replicate the following Carolina experience: a new owner is going to take over the team that he is coaching and RR is going to get fired.
  3. I have mixed feelings about Brissett. On the one hand JB is: 1. A great team player - this means he shows leadership qualities, plays within the scheme and knows his role 2. He's got a decent NFL arm - throws a "catchable ball." He has a relatively fast release, throws with medium velocity and generally steps into his throws so they don't tend to sail like TH. 3. He's conservative with his decision making and picks his spots - known for being responsible with the ball. His career TD to INTs is 48:23. 4. He's a proven vet - he's been "around the block" so he should be used to picking up new a playbook. Since 2016 he's played in 76 games. 5. He's generally cool under pressure - he shows a certain amount of escapability and protects himself when on the run (gets whats given to him and then slides to live another day). On the other hand JB is: 1. A career backup QB - he has played for 5 teams since 2016. JB had 4 seasons to prove himself with the Colts and they seemingly always were looking to replace him. Similar to TH, JB is a high level backup, low level starter. His win-loss record is not great: 35-41. However JB has played for some pretty bad teams (Colts, Miami and Browns). He had no chance at the Patriots (where he was drafted) as he was behind Brady and Garoppolo and Belichik did him a favor by trading him to the Colts. 2. He's a 8 million dollar one year rental - JB came here specifically because he believes there is an opportunity to start. JB is a mediocre QB and is most definitely the worst QB in the NFC East. JB will most likely will be gone next year along with RR and RR's whole coaching and admin staff. 3. Due to his experience JB should beat out SH during training camp and become QB1 - for this very reason I'd rather have kept TH vs. signed JB. TH was not a threat to SH (unless SH totally s#$ts the bed). TH was a good mentor for SH and most likely would have been more of an asset to SH than JB as SH learns a new playbook. RR has to hope the SH somehow has a great season and WASH sneaks into the playoffs (which is very unlikely). As I've mentioned before statistically TH and JB are very similar: TH career stats: https://www.playerprofiler.com/nfl/taylor-heinicke/ JB career stats: https://www.playerprofiler.com/nfl/jacoby-brissett/ Although TH is a poorer thrower than JB, he's more clutch and tends to be at his best when the game is on the line. TH had a much better win/loss record vs. JB in '22 and played in a much more difficult division. RR should have saved himself a couple of million, kept TH and put the savings toward extending Curl who is the most important player on their defense. Realistic Expectation with JB and SH: So, essentially I don't expect JB to work out @ WASH. I expect WASH to not make the playoffs (again) and JB will be looking for another team next year. That being said, he's making 8 mil for a one year rental. JB should have a chance to start. He has decent offensive specialty players to get the ball to so it makes sense the JB would want to come here and use WASH as recruitment material for his next team. My hope is that WASH's offensive line gets better, SH starts some games and further builds his confidence and is ready to really shine in '24 with a new coach and GM. In hindsight RR should have put SH in during week 6 against CHI during the past season. CHI stunk at the time and it would have given SH a great opportunity to win his first game and start his career off on a good foot. If RR was honest with himself he should have seen the writing on wall with CW during training camp which was in full display during the 4 game skid during the early part of the season. RR knew what kind of player TH was so there was no reason to go back to that well (which he did anyway to try and save his job). His only hope was to give SH experience with the possibility that he would become a good QB in '23. RR acted more like a Coach then a Team President (which is why it's a bad idea to make your Coach the Team President). RR blew it and fell prey to his own ego regarding his over protection of CW and last ditch effort to start him against the Browns. RR's fatal flaw during his time here in WASH was essentially his first decision out of the gate: he should have traded back and drafted Herbert in '20 instead of Young when he had the opportunity to possibly get a franchise QB. He had a #2 pick in the draft allowing him to get a top shelf rookie QB and had zero reasons to keep either DH and AS as QB choices for WASH since he wasn't involved with their drafting or trade acquisition. He stepped into a situation that any new coach would like when starting the beginning of a coaching era (opportunity to draft a young gifted QB with a struggling team that needs a total rebuild). Ever since that failed decision WASH has been treading water. RR's mentality to build a team first and then plug a QB later is fool's gold. Finding a decent franchise QB has proven to be very difficult. RR thought he could pull a Brady in TB (who is the GOAT so that is totally unrealistic) or a Stafford in LA (who excelled specifcally b/c of the genius of HC/OS SM) but that was never going to happen once RR decided to hand the keys of the offense over to a totally inexperienced ST as the team's OC (which, BTW was RR's 2nd big mistake). That being said, RR's mistakes as WASH's Team President are one of the reasons that DS is selling the team so RR can at least put that feather in his hat when he looks back at his time in WASH. Unfortunately '23 will be a wasted year for WASH's really good defense and pretty good WR and RB squads. WASH will once again be starting over in '24 with a new coaching staff and owner and my hope is that SH will display good enough tape in '23 and that the new coach will decide to make him as QB1 in '24. Since RR is playing for his job/legacy WASH will not be bad enough to get one of the talented rookie QB's available at the top of the '24 draft so basically for WASH's new coach and GM it's SH or a vet retread.
  4. I don't know. Last week was pretty much cruise control for the entire 2nd half. Boring 2nd half, but the game was never in doubt which is a very rare thing to occur in the past 10 years for this the WC/WFT/Skins. I agree that TH is a liability throwing it, but his pocket presence and mobility is what this offense needs right now considering how bad the middle of their OL is. TH looked to me like a game manager last week. Hopefully the same can happen tomorrow. - Take what the ATL D gives you and don't press (this, IMO is TH biggest achilles heel) - Don't get behind in yards due to tackles behind the line (sacks/runs or poorly executed screens) and/or offsides/hold flags creating long 3rd downs - WC D controls ATL run game and makes them pass - Win in TOP ATL has not been able to score over 20 when playing half-way decent defenses.
  5. I'm looking at the list of highest paid backups noted on the OP and still think TH is as good (if not better) than all the guys listed on there (save for maybe JimmyG). At this point I don't think TH is going to get an extension, especially with ownership and the coaching staff up in the air for next year. If I were TH, I'd go the KC route, roll the dice for the rest of the season, test the FA market and let his play speak for itself. He's got a very good thing going now with how solid the defense is and ST is suddenly interested in a conservative running attack again. If Robinson continues his steady play, that leaves TH in very managable 3rd down scenarios which he is more than capable of operating in (especially with his mobility). If TH stays in the rest of the season, I think going 4-3 in the next 7 games is a realistic possibility. That would make the WC a possible playoff contender, give TH a season record of 7-4 and give RR his best record to date with the needle pointing up for 2023 for a possible return. Maybe TH would give WC a homer deal if/when he resigns since he is very loyal to RR and ST and knows their offense very well. But then again maybe not. There is the potential for TH to be a starter somewhere else. The "elite" QB's have suddenly looked very old (TB, RW, AR, DC) which suggest a "changing of the guard" and the perrenial bottom dwellers (Detroit, Texans) might be interested in TH as a starter to drum up interest with their fanbase (this happen with Washington in terms of Kellen Clemens and then again with Fitzpatrick who were other teams backup QB the year before). Therefore, there is a good possibility of numerous starting QB realignment for numerous teams next year. Furthermore, there's a good crop of QBs coming out next draft. If I were a GM, I'd want to get a solid backup QB to go along with the rookie who would stabilize the team while the rookie is learning as a backup and to be a good teacher for the rookie once they do start. Because of this there's always the potential that TH could be someone else's backup, the question is would TH move on to another team as the backup if he was given the opportunity to get elite backup QB money (5-7M). He's making 2.75M right now so he might jump for the money if WC tries to low ball him. At this time TH is a marketable commodity and is a fan favorite. It's pretty bad when your backup QB is the face WC decides to show FedEx Field in ads for 2023 season tickets. So I guess that means TH is the face of the team? You'd think for that reason WC would figure out a way to get his extension done yesterday. I wouldn't put it past RR and his crew of general managers to somehow screw this up. RR showed an impressive lack of tact with the T. Williams situation who was a fan favorite and probably the best player to be in a skins/WFT/Commanders uniform in the past 10 years and is still kicking serious butt for the 49ers.
  6. Totally agree with this. WC should find out what they've got in Howell now and (as bad as this sounds) sink the season and/or trade certain assets to acquire draft capital. This is definitley not going to happen now due to the potential ownership change as Rivera is either going to play for his job here and/or his next gig somewhere else (that is if he doesn't decide to retire). Unfortunately we will be stuck again with a mediocre record disallowing us to get out of the vicious mediocre QB merry-go-round we've been dealing with for the past 20 years. They should have never gotten rid of Cousins and I'm willing to bet this weekend will be a reminder of that.
  7. This table doesn't tell the whole story. True that there are less physcial touches on the QB, but what I was talking about was actual QB pressures (i.e. disruptions to the QB altering their base/timing/causing them scramble, etc). Usually pressures lead to more hits/sacks, but not in TH's case (in comparison to CW) due to: 1. His understanding of the offense (i.e. knows where to go with the ball when he sees a specific defensive alignment) 2. Ability to get the ball out faster 3. Better pocket awareness 4. More mobile/elusive There was tremendous amount of pressure all game on TH and the Colts game was the most pressure the O-Line has allowed in a WC game all season. This was noted either by Galdi or Hoffman on their pods (can't remember which). People on this thread talk a lot of smack about TH's arm strength (or lack thereof) but that is usually b/c when he is throwing he is under duress and does not have a good base (i.e. throwing off his back foot and/or scrambling). He did spend a lot of time in the off-season working on improving his base/mechanics so he can get his hips/core into his throws to increase his accuracy/zip/distance, but if you are always on the move and/or off-balance due to pocket pressure you can never use your base/core during your throwing motion. He does have an issue with his mechanics breaking down under pressure which causes his passes to become inaccurate (usually thrown too high) and lofty (without zip). This is the same reason why CW's passes are so inaccurate. CW had very little zero time to set/be comfortable in the pocket and Turner didn't help him with this as much as he could of. The difference is that TH has better pocket awareness/mobility which gets him out of a lot of pocket pressure issues that CW can't. My favorite skin's longball QB was Rypien. He was fantastic at the longball but he had the following things going for him: 1. Great coaches 2. Great WR group 3. Incredible O-line That dude would go games without getting hit which allowed him to be very comfortable in the pocket and throw with great base and mechanics. You'll note when he left the Skins (I think he went to the Browns?) he had nowhere near as good of an O-line and his ability to be proficient at the longball was significantly affected. Rivera really unvalued the importance of the O-line this year. I think he got a little over-confident in his coaching staff and felt that they could plug anybody in the line to replace Scherff and Flowers with which has cost him big time this year in terms of mishandling the CW acquisition. Unfortunately that acquisition is probably going to lead to Rivera's downfall as the Coach/President of this team (not that he had a lot of options last spring). Interestingly Rivera constantly preached the mindset that all he needed to do was build a good team for the first three years and then plug in a decent QB to get the team to become truly competitive. That might have worked but he didn't follow this plan when it came improving/developing the O-line.
  8. Disagree with the O-Line getting better. Their run blocking was horrid last game and last game saw the highest QB pressure so far this season. 1 sack for TH = 6 - 8 sacks for CW.
  9. He's the coach AND President of the team. He therefore needs to be thinking about the next game and the franchise moving forward.
  10. If Ron feels there's a chance that he will still be here next year then he'll want continuity with his coaching staff and thus TH would be of value as a backup QB. In terms of being fiscally responsible in terms of potentialing have a new owner, TH will be cheaper now (if we extend him) then if he becomes unrestricted. Ron's plan for CW failed, he's got very little options in terms of finding a new replacement. His only hope for creating any excitement for next year is that the team cements itself around TH and makes the playoffs. Again, I'm not talking about TH being the starter, I'm talking about rewarding him for his backup QB play by offering him an extension. TH is well liked by the team and the fanbase. He will command little money in regards to an extension. They can even write it so there little to no issue if/when they want to bail from TH. To me it just sounds like a win-win.
  11. The reason we're talking about extension now is after this season Heinike is an unrestricted free agent. He can entertain any deal he wants at that point. WC may very well be in total chaos by the beginning of next year in terms of questions about who will be the owner let alone the coach. In my mind you want two things: 1. You want to show TH he is of value to the organization (thus the extension) 2. If you want to keep him (which I still maintain he's a very good backup QB for his intangibles alone) you don't want him even have the opportunity to entertain other offers. 3. We've got zero solutions for next year in terms of a starter QB Most likely we're going to have a mediocre season again this year. Ron is either going to want to put up a good show to keep his job with the new owner and/or impress other potential suitors if he leaves (so there goes draft potential). Moreover no decent free agent is going to have any interest in coming here with all the chaos that will occur early next year due to the owner/potential coach issues. If you compare TH to the other backup QBs on the list I posted in the OP the only backup QB that i might choose over TH if Scott Turner is still around is Jimmy G and he's going to be pretty expensive and want to be a starter.
  12. Personally, I think it would be a real mistake to not extend Heinicke ASAP. With our continual O-line issues and lack of a consistant running game the fact is every year since Cousins left we've needed to rely on our backup. Heinicke is proven he can win and b/c of his years of experience in the Turner offense he can be very effective with little to no 1st team reps coming in cold and has show durability. Dallas is very lucky that things worked out the way they did with Cooper Rush when Prescott went out. Their season has fallen apart in the past when they didn't have a decent backup (as well as a lot of other teams). This is the 2nd season in a row that Heinike has had to go in and operate an offense with very little preparation beforehand. Personally I think the backup QB is a very valuable position in today's NFL and should not be an afterthought. I think everyone should be able to agree that Heinike is a very good backup QB and most likely will be picked up very quickly and paid good money in the offseason by another team if the WCs don't extend him beforehand. I say sign this guy now and figure out the Wentz/Howell role later.
  13. Regardless of how you feel about Heinicke as a starter I think any rational person can agree that he's a darn good backup. He check all the boxes for a good backup including: 1. Good grasp of the offense 2. Good ability to come in cold and win a game 3. Has shown good ability to win games in short spurts when starter is injured 4. Good leadership and is well liked 5. Good in the QB room (i.e. no huge ego) 6. Not too inexpensive His contract is up at the end of this year. At this point I would think Heinicke should be considered at least a top 10 (if not top 5) backup QB in the NFL and as we all know every team needs a strong backup QB to get them through an entire grueling NFL season. I think the Commanders should be working feverishly to get his extension done now (like yesterday). I would think Heinicke would be open to an extension since he has a certain amount of loyalty to Rivera and Turner and since he has so much knowledge of the Turner offense. Thoughts? What would you pay him? He's probably worth 5 MIL a year to lock him in. Here's the top backup QB salaries: 10 Highest-Paid Backup NFL QBs of 2022 (Average Annual Salary) Player Team Avg. 14. I never said that CY injured his PT in his other knee. He injured his PT in the same knee that he injured his ACL which is why his injury is considered complex and will most likely cause addtional delay in returning to action. According to the interview info doctors needed to first repair his PT and then later repair his ACL which delayed the ACL repair by up to 6 weeks. It also necessitated that his injured knee remain in a cast for 6 weeks after the PT surgery which is problematic as ACL recovery requires you to start to articulate your knee almost immediately after the surgery to reduce scar tissue build up. End result is that CY is going to have a much harder time getting back on the field vs. an athlete that has a "standard" ACL injury. I'm not sure if doctors did take part of his PT from his other knee to repair his injured knee, but if so that suggests that both knees required physical therapy making rehab even more difficult for CY.
  15. Interesting interview on The Kevin Sheehan Show podcast today. He interviewed a sports doctor (Dr. Jesse Morse) that is also heavily into FF which helps him make predictions as to how bad a player is injured and when he might be available again. https://thekevinsheehanshow.com/category/podcast/ Couple things of interest: 1. CY having both a patella and ACL injury is very rare and is almost physically impossible to occur as the type of torque it takes to snap a ACL is not the same as what it takes to rupture a patella tendon 2. The guest hypothesized that CY was dealing with possibly a partial patella tear earlier in the season which the player was trying to play through (which might explain why CY had a bad year before the injury) and that the injury that cause the ACL tear might have been enough to cause the petalla tendon to completely rupture 3. The guest indicated that dealing with both injuries is complicated and that more than likely the patella tendon was fixed first (which would cause his leg to be immobilized for 4-6 weeks) and then the ACL was repaired 4. The guest didn't think that CY could come back until November and if the season is not going well the WCs might decide to just have him sit out the whole season and get his knee as strong as possible before having him become fully activated.
  16. New article in WP on DH's time @ Pittsburg and a rehash of his tragic accident. https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/08/24/dwayne-haskins-death-steelers/ No new earth shattering news here except some quotes from Pittsburg QB coach on how hard DH was working to take advantage of his second chance. The article also indicated that DH had reportedly shown some self realization about has lack of accountability and work ethic when playing for Washington. There was also a new nugget posted insinuating that DH may have been walking quite a bit of time before he made it to the highway where the accident occurred (in regards to DH's phone reporting his location when his wife got in touch with him right before she called the police about her concerns). Interestingly there is still no information on where his car that ran out of gas was located nor who the lady was that was in his car with him that morning. She did evidently report that she was with DH since 7pm the night before.
  17. bump on old thread.... Searched, but didn't find a thread in which anyone mentioned their thoughts on the new booth (Weinstein, Donaldson and Hall). I tried to listen to it through the Redskins/WFT app but it kept telling me when clicking on the "LIVE" button that I did not have an app to handle the url (not sure what that means as I've never seen that error before). I've had tons of problems in the past with the Redskins/WFT app when trying to listen to the game so I wasn't exactly surprised. In any event there's an article out indicating some early growing pains issues with the booth personalities which I guess is to be expected. Anyone else care to chime in on their first impressions of the show in terms of the content and quality?
  18. What about calling Terry "DeLorean McLaurin." We could post signs that say 88 mph and then have him burst into fire as he goes "Back in Time" (just kidding but that would be a helluva a commercial; hint hint PR staff). Heck, the Stadium could even play the Huey Lewis and News' song (great song BTW) everytime he scores a TD or performs some significant impact play. Ahhhh... the 80's.
  19. Any know how to delay 980 live audio stream to match a video stream?
  20. SD stream that seems to be working: http://goatd.net/119272/watch-miami-dolphins-vs-washington-redskins
  21. Getting a lot of buffering issues with that link. Any others that would work?
