Defeat!!!

Panthers 26 - 15 Redskins

Hello everybody, JimmiJo here. I am joined by my partner of the ages; TheMurf, and together we will bring you the goings-on for tonight's matchup featuring the Washington Redskins versus the Carolina Panthers.

After a few weeks in the wilderness, the Redskins again control their destiny. As I type they are the 6th and final seed for the NFC playoffs. They need to win tonight to secure the position, at least for this week. For the record, a loss doesn't mean they cannot still get in, but it hands their fate to someone else, again.

The bookies have the Redskins favored by 7. And while that's encouraging in that vegas usually knows what they are doing; a voice inside reminds of Washington's dismal prime-time performances, at least since I've been covering since 2006.

That said I feel good about the Redskins' chances. They know how important this is. They also have a kick-ass offense. On the flip-side Carolina has had a poor season and are likely looking forward to getting it behind them in order to begin working on next.

This doesn't mean they wouldn't love to shine on national TV. And there is the thing called pride. So I am not expecting a capitulation prior to kickoff. But a good punch in the mouth should be enough to convince them it's just not worth it.

Except for the reality that is Washington's defense. The technical term for how they are playing lately is; "sucks." But they have been opportunistic and a turnover can help put this one away.

Here's to a good match.

Final Pregame Thoughts

There is a healthy dose of skepticism towards the Redskins among the handful of beat-reporters I spoke with. These people are not haters, but are taking the poor performance of Washington's defense along with the front-seven of Carolina into consideration.

That said I still believe (which is not really worth much). I think the notion of controlling their own destiny is too much to let slip.

I guess we will see shortly.

See you at the half...

Half

After the Cousins' pick I expected Carolina to score another TD and for the game to be over. Somehow a roughing non-call coupled with a taunting call on Cam Newton acted as the big momentum switch Washington needed to get things going. A touchdown drive later and we have a 4-point game with the Redskins getting the ball to start the 2nd half.

The Panthers missed a chance to put the Redskins away. Now it is anyone's game.

See you after...

Turnovers. Tackling. Time of possession. Sometimes it is just not your night.

The Washington Redskins lost to the Carolina Panthers, 26-15 to jeopardize their playoff chances with two games remaining on the season.

In tonight’s loss Washington struggled in the one area they have been most consistent this year; the offense. Interceptions and fumbles. Poor throws and drops. Anemic on third down and inept when rushing. It added up to an inconsistent outing.

But the Redskins also struggled in the one area you would expect; the defense. Whether it was giving up big runs to Jonathan Stewart, or big throws to Greg Olson and Ted Ginn. Washington allowed a 30-plus yard scamper on 3rd-and-1.

Not to be left-out, teams contributed their own let-downs, providing poor starting field position, and allowing big returns from the Panthers’ return men.

These added up to Washington once again on the outside looking in for a playoff berth, needing help from someone to get back into contention.

Talk about a missed opportunity.

Dallas’ victory over Tampa Bay gave the Redskins something they sorely desired; control of their destiny. Yet they played as if they couldn’t wait to squander the chance.

Carolina’s first-half drives went field goal, punt, touchdown, field goal, punt, punt. The Redskins conversely, went punt, field goal, interception, punt, touchdown, punt.

The score was 13-9 in favor of Carolina at the half with Washington scheduled to receive the 2nd half kickoff.

Will Blackmon returned Washington’s ball to only their 14 to start the 3rd quarter. And on first down, Kirk Cousins was sacked with the Panthers recovering at the Redskins’ one yard-line. Two-plays later the Panthers scored their second touchdown.

Washington would add only another field goal to their score while Carolina added a total of 10 to bring the 4th quarter score to 23-12.

Worse than the score was the plays where Panther receivers were running free to big yards. Washington’s defense many times failed to account for a free receiver, or couldn’t stop Stewart running out of the backfield.

The Redskins did have opportunities. When Carolina kicker Graham Gano missed a field goal with just over 6-minutes to go, Washington had the ball and enough time to overcome an 11-point deficit.

They marched down to the Carolina 6, but an illegal use of hands against Morgan Moses put them back to the 16 on third down. Chris Thompson dropped the ensuing pass attempt, which brought out Dustin Hopkins to kick a 34-yard field goal.

Down 8 with 3:44 remaining, The Redskins decided to kick off and rely on their defense to provide another drive opportunity.

Instead Jonathan Stewart ran the 1st down hand off 34-yards to the Redskins’ 36. Two plays later, another 10-yard scamper from Stewart.

Ahead 23-15 and at the Washington 23-yard line, Carolina looked to put the game on-ice with a Gano field goal at the two-minute warning.

He did.

Cam Newton ended the night 21/37 for 300-yards and 2 touchdowns with a passer rating of 101.1.

Kirk Cousins completed 32/47 for 316-yards and 1 interception for a rating of 77.96.

Washington is now 7-6-1 on the season.

KDawg

Over 4,000 yards in consecutive seasons.

That's how I'm going to start this article.

Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins became the first man in team history to not only post two 4,000 yard seasons, but he also did that consecutively. That's quite the feat. Cousins only needs 122 yards to best his franchise record 4,155 yards on a season, and he's just 955 yards short of a 5,000 yard season. Obviously, that would be the first in team history. In order to do so, he'd need to average just shy of 320 yards per game. Daunting, but possible.

To be clear, Kirk couldn't do it without his weapons. Pierre Garcon has quietly turned in a pretty good season. He's posted 64 receptions and leads the team. Crowder leads the team in yards with just over 800 and possesses a team high 7 touchdowns. And that's not been mentioning the third down prowess of Jordan Reed and the deep ball threat of Desean Jackson.

So where's the controversy? Why am I coining this team escape artists?

Because as good as this offense has been, the defense has been quite the opposite. The team lacks a true anchor to hold opposing offensive linemen at the line of scrimmage. The linebackers seem to be in a conflict. They don't want to get beat by anything crossing behind them, so they gain depth quickly, but that also leaves them much less aggressive in filling their running lanes. And I'm not sure this franchise has covered the flats much, if at all, this season.

So who is to blame? The easy target is Barry. McCloughan is probably the next target. Gruden comes to mind.

But I'm not sure we can really be sure that any of them are to blame...

Barry is easy to blame, especially given the lack of flats coverage. But Joe Barry doesn't coach guys to break contain or let an opposing quarterback who is completely wrapped up escape the clutches of a defender. My question, though, is what say has he had over personnel? Has he had a ton? Some? None? To what level is he to blame, or not to blame, for the defensive maneuvers.

McCloughan is another guy that's not all that easy to pin down. Can we really chastise a guy who has shored up the offense to the point that he has and not believe he's got the same plan for the defense coming down the road? Is he doing all the grocery shopping, or do the coaches have any say?

I am not sure. I'm not in the film room breaking down countless hours of film and watching it ad nauseum. I'm not the one scouting the free agent wire and grading guys and pouring over every inch of game film I can get my hands on for hundreds of free agents. It would be irresponsible for me to blame anyone.

But that doesn't change the feeling I get when watching this Washington Redskin team.

We won yesterday. We all should have been elated. We're alive in the playoff race. But for some reason, it didn't feel like a win. It felt like an escape. It felt like we were beaten but somehow grasped victory from the jaws of defeat. And let's be honest, there's something to say for a team that does that as consistently as the Redskins do. They play with heart. Very rarely do they find themselves in a situation that they can't win the game in the waning moments. That is a testament to the team the guys mentioned above have put together.

But it's also a sign that improvements need to be made. I'm quite sure the front office brass knows that. There is a lack of talent, especially on the defensive side of the ball. But there is certainly no shortage of heart. That's where I hang my hat. The Redskins show up to play, and play with a sense of pride. That's not a hallmark of the recent tradition in regards to the franchise.

There is an upward trend in many ways. So while there are holes, and heart palpitations, and frustration, there is also hope. There are good people leading the charge.

But for the love of all that is good... Fix the defense. Please.

Hello humanoids. @TK and I will be live from the Linc today.

This blog is meant to be an interactive experience. That means we need you... the people... This isn't going to JUST be an info thread. You'll get that, of course... but witty banter will be bandied about like chocolate in Willy Wonka's factory. So what does this mean? Post. What can you post? Anything. Ask questions. Ask about the food, the Wooly Mammoth (where the rally was, and as @superozman would "it was lit ???"), ask about Theismann's hair (he's not here but ask anyways, I'm sure it's wonderful)... Ask about a specific player... Ask about anything. Literally. I'll even tell you what I ate for breakfast.

Check back here for more...

Some tidbits:

Scherff, according to a birdie, is likely to play.

Reed is likely to play.

Joe Barry had a sweet hoodie on last night at the hotel

TK couldn't get his crowbar through security (not sure why he wanted me to relay this info... weird, right?)

Philadelphia was a nightmare to drive in last night, but our Uber driver was badass. She had a Mike Tyson style tattoo and she drove with an aggressiveness that rivaled anyone. She bobbed and wove like Ali in his prime. Shout out to her.

im not sure "in position" means what they think it means.

11:39 AM: Sundberg is warming up. We're wearing white on burgundy. Love that look.

11:42 AM: Inactives: Sudfield, Ross, Jones, Blackmon, Long, Lauvao, Lanier

Sullivan starting at C, Kouandjio starting at LG, Ihenacho starting for Blackmon at safety.

Noon: Way punting 55-60 yards from LOS in warm ups. Perfect spirals. WAY to Punt! Get it? Way to punt?

12:05 PM: 4202D631-43F7-441A-BDBB-E7912E0A3531_zps

TK found a ride while he takes pics. What's with the hoodie though, man?

12:22 PM: The referees mic is working. File that under, "things you didn't know you cared about..." but I know you do and I have your backs.

12:36 PM: Cousins needs just 356 yards to break the single season passing record that he owns. Has four games to do it. Needs around 1,200 for 5000. Would need to average ~300/game. Doable.

its 10 minutes before kickoff. Where is everyone? Place looks like their trophy case.

First D drive: Linebackers are concerning me. Slow to fill on run, too deep on passes. Tells me they are nervous about getting beat behind them.

First O drive: second down draw an iffy ar best call. Probably had a tendency they were trying to bust and out thought ourselves. Crowder ran his route short of the chains.

2nd O Drive: Eagles watching Crowder like a hawk. Need Garçon to keep coming through.

End of the 1st quarter: Skins look sloppy and ill prepared. Eagles taking away Crowder and attacking Dunbar. Skins need to shore that up immediately.

Defensive issues: Inside backers struggling to expand on flat routes. OLB/DEs rushing means someone has to get to flat. Safeties being run off. That's also why our ILBs are so deep on passes and hesitant to fill on run. ILB is a large issue.

Touchdown Drive: Great job mixing it up and keeping the running game involved. Good play calling and execution there. Important. McCloughan, Santos et al should be proud of that one.

Norman anticipated a short pass and got beat deep on a 3rd down play. It's what you get with him. Important to note, Kerrigan played man to man on TE to flats on the second third down attempt on that drive. Good adjustment.

Halftime thoughts: Need to adjust coverage scheme. Part of the issue is cornerback being a barren wasteland of talent. We can't leave the flats open all game. LBs need to trust instincts and be more aggressive. Offense needs to keep Kelley involved and find Garcon. He is the x-factor for the O. They are more worried about Crowder and Jackson. He has to get targets.

Jackson TD: They had been setting that up all game long. Great play. Desean's burst is a huge asset to this offense.

That TD to Garcon should have put Cousins over 4000 yards on the season.

The personal foul on Sproles was a personal foul by rule. But in no way was it dirty. Hard football play that timed out wrong for Everett.

Greetings humanoids from the desert where today Kirk Cousins & the Redskins look to avenge a disgusting loss from two years ago. Some of you may remember when the Cards were still in the NFC East, which was a glorious time as it was them who were always guarandamnteed to finish last in the Division. Times have changed though, & not only are they no longer in the East, they also no longer play at Sun Devil. Sun Devil was always a cool looking stadium on the tv & breathtaking in person as it was carved into the rock. Now, they have one of the best domed stadiums in the League. Everything here is clean, staff is exceptionally polite, the landscaping around the stadium is immaculate. And their tailgating setup is the absolute best I've seen at any stadium. I've said it before & I'll say it again now: When Dan builds his new stadium I really hope it incorporates some of the things they have here.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF INACTIVES

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Washington Redskins have announced the following inactives and lineup changes for today’s game against the Arizona Cardinals:

The Redskins declared the following players as inactive:

o   No. 2 QB Nate Sudfeld

o   No. 19 WR Rashad Ross

o   No. 31 RB Matt Jones

o   No. 35 CB Dashaun Phillips

o   No. 69 DL A.J. Francis

o   No. 72 DE Anthony Lanier II

o   No. 86 TE Jordan Reed

No. 85 Vernon Davis is expected to start in place of Reed at tight end.

:1386: What I'm Watching For

With Jordan Reed out today, the first instinct is to watch for Vernon Davis to have great day. However, the Cards Defense has been shutting down TEs. Therefore I'm looking for Crowder to continue to ascend by picking up Reeds targets & possibly have a career day.  I'm also looking for the offense to hit that damn fade route again this week simply because they finally hit it last week against Dallas. That alone is why I fully expect to see it again. On Defense, I'm looking to see if Barry moves Norman into the Slot depending on the WR. And on Special Teams all I want to see is Hopkins simply not miss. That's not to much to ask for but given his last two games...

It it takes forever to get there but the roof is open today.

:1386: Quick Notes

As you can see above, the roof is open today. It's 70 degrees here in Glendale. Beautiful weather for football. It reminds me of of September game at FedEx. Tons & I mean TONS of Redskins fans here today. There were so many last night at the Rally that the Tilted Kilt was at capacity about an hour before the event even began. The Burgundy & Gold is well represented here in the desert at FedEx West.

Redskins Rally at Tilted Kilt

:1386: FIRST QUARTER

Redskins win the coin toss & defer. Cards start off feeding the Beast, David Johnson. Even with small gains n yardage, the Cards have managed to move to midfield. For the Defense, Nacho is making tackles, though Cravens failed at a pass defense for Johnson. Kerrigan deflects a pass intended for Floyd. Next play, Johnson gashes the Defense up the middle, thankfully fumbles (caused by Nacho) but Cards recover. Cards in the Red Zone. RJF tips a pass. Scotty Mac, sitting two seats down from me is saying we had had two missed turnovers on this drive. After a stop by Kerrigan, Johnson finds the end zone for the games first touchdown. Kick is good, Cards go 15 plays in 8 minutes for 75 yards & the score.

Skins offense takes the field & the crowd gets LOUD in cheering for them. Just like FedEx. Kirk to Garçon for 9 followed by a stupid false start penalty on Carrier. Followed by a false start on Lauvao. A certain GM is shaking his head. He's not alone. Kirk incomplete to DJax & then sacked for a loss of 10. 4th & 21. UGLY first attempted drive. Defense stops the Cards quick & Cards are forced to punt so the Offense gets to try to get their ish together now. Carrier in at TE & im trying to figure out how he jumped over Vernon Davis at TE. Rob Kelley up the middle for a nice gain. Kirk feeds two passes to Garçon & the Offense is starting to get in a groove. Annnnnd Kirk gets a pass deflected & nearly picked off. Press Box let's out a sigh of relief. Kirk incomplete to Crowder & Skins forced to pun. Cards called for holding during the punt. And the Cards are called for a penalty. It's 2nd & 10 on their 8. Defense turns it up & smothers Johnson after a 1 yard gain.

:1386: SECOND QUARTER

Defensively, Cravens pretty much ended the Cards drive. The kid is simply fun to watch. Redskins run game has evidently decided to show up now. Thompson with a speedy Westbrook like gain on the right side & the Kelly up the middle. Followed by a pitch to Fat Rob for 4. And then Lauvao is called for a fals start. AGAIN. This drive stalls out & Hopkins in to kick. It's good & its 7-3 Cards.

Josh Norman just stuffed the hell outta Johnson for a loss of 5. Damn that was fun to watch. The Defense stepped up this drive & stops the Cards  before they can cross mid field. Redskins will start this drive at the 48. Time to put 7 on that board.  Instead they start with ANOTHER false start this one on Scherff. Skins finally convert a third down. They're now 1-4 on third down conversions. Here we go, Skins back in the Red Zone. Time to get 7 & take the lead. Ryan Grant getting into the mix now. Two passes & he's at the 1. Fat Rob drops a pass wide open in the end zone. Offense also called for an illegal shift & is backed up 5 yards. Kirk to Davis who picks up 5 & is back to the 1. Fat Rob up the middle for no gain.

:1386: TWO MINUTE WARNING

Spencer Long is questionable for a return with a shoulder injury. Kick is good & it's Redskins down 7-6 to the Cards with 1:52 left in the half. Norman with a beautiful breakup on a pass to Floyd in the corner endzone right below us. Redskins down 10-6.

:1386: HALFTIME THOUGHTS

The Defense has surprisingly stepped up & limited any big plays except for the shot downfield to Fitzgerald & a 22 yard chunk to Johnson inside the two minute warning. The bigger issue so far is the damn offense. First the can't get it going then every time they do, they get stupid holding penalties that negate any positive momentum they get going. They've had some questionable personnel decisions like Carrier at TE to start over Davis, & Grant in over Maurice Harris who had seemed to jump Grant in the lineup the last two games.

:1386: THIRD QUARTER

Looks like they found the Offense during the half. A deep shot to DJax & a few plays later Kirk on a keeper into the end zone from the 1 for the go ahead TD. 13-10 Redskins. Spencer Long now out with a concussion. And it seems we left the Defense in the locker room at the half. They haven't been able to stop anything this drive except for a touchdown pass in the corner endzone that Dunbar broke up. And the Murphy sacks Palmer into an early grave. VICIOUS HIT. Me likey. :) Cards miss a 50+ field goal attempt & it's Redskins ball at the 43. Annnd Kirk gets hit, fumbles, Cards recover for 20 yards & only Thompson saves it from being a touchdown. Jeebus. Palmer has a thing for his right corner end zone. Every time he throws one there we break it up.  Palmer to Floyd over the middle for the touchdown. So much for having a lead. 17-13 Cards. After nearly 3 quarters, gets his first catch for a gain of 2. At this point, Garçon is still the feature WR this game having gone 6 of 8 for 75 yards. Crowder FINALLY hits the end zone where my FF team says it's about time & its 20-17 Redskins. Dear sweet little baby Jesus please let this D hold. Ok so Palmer overthrows Floyd & Breeland was a step away from the pick 2nd down. Cards gain 7. 3rd & 3. Palmer to Fitz over the middle for the First Down. End of the 3rd.

:1386: FOURTH QUARTER

1st & 10 at theit 35. Cards ball. Here we go...Cards pass for 3. 2nd & 7.... pass incomplete FLAG holding on their TE, 2nd & 17....1st & 10....1st & 10....1st & 10....2nd & 5....Will Blackmon is down....And Johnson bull rushes into the end zone on a pass from Palmer for 25 yards & the TD. 24-20 Cards  with 11:09 left on the clock. At least the Steelers are whuppin some Giants ass right now.  Skins come out running it for 10 yards then Cousins has to throw it away. Finally back to Crowder as the Cards D has even preoccupied with trying to defend Garçon. Fat Rob stopped for a loss of 3. There's a Harris sighting. Watch this kid as he can ball. Cousins incomplete to Crowder which would have been short of First Down anyways. Hopkins nails a 53 yarder. & its 24-23 Cards.  6:01 left to go. Defense held them to a 4th &1 & Cards went for it, Johnson gashes the **** outta the D &his sto

pped rom scoring by Norman. 2:11 left on the clock....Norman then called for holding gives the Cards. 1st down at the 42. ...2nd & 10 at the 42... The roof is still open & it's getting considerably darker in here. And the Cards score a TD. 31-23 Cards.

:1386: TWO MINUTE WARNING

Skins are now forced to not only score a TD but a 2 point conversion as well just to tie it & head to overtime. Kirk to Garçon who is keyed in on immediately. Gain of 3. Back to Crowder, incomplete but AZ called for a 15 yard roughing the passer penalty for a free First Down. Kirk incomplete to Crowder again on the sideline. Same play complete to Grant, flag is out, Hands to the face called on AZ, another free First Down. :)  Kirk to Davis over the middle for 18. Complete to Davis again. Incomplete to DJax...Kirk to Crowder INTERCEPTED with 41 ticks left on the clock. And with a Tampa win, as of now Paloffs are next year.

:1386: Happy Thanksgiving from deep in enemy territory. The Redskins continue to sport the Championship uniform off the white jersey/burgundy pant combo on the road. Meanwhile, the Cowboys are departing from their normal throwback uniform to wearing their bad luck blue jersey. Here's to their continued back luck wearing it today.

:1386: ANNOUNCEMENT OF INACTIVES

The Redskins declared the following players as inactive:

o   No. 2 QB Nate Sudfeld

o   No. 19 WR Rashad Ross

o   No. 31 RB Matt Jones

o   No. 57 LS Nick Sundberg

o   No. 68 T Blaine Clausell

o   No. 74 G Arie Kouandjio

o   No. 98 DE Matt Ioannidis

:1386: KEYS TO VICTORY

The Defense must stop Beasley. Joe Barry didn't have an answer for him back in Week 2. Let's hope he's learned from that.

Feed Reed. To many times Reed will get off to a decent start only to have the offense go away from him after a quarter.

Control the clock. Dallas is currently ranked 3rd at T.O.P.  The Redskins can pretty much score at will once they get their rather going, however, the the best defense is an offense that keeps them off the field.

One thing I have to do though is give props to the Cowboys organization. They put out one heck of a Thanksgiving Day spread for those of us that are here covering this game instead of being home with families.

:1386: First Quarter

The Skins miss the coin toss but Dallas chooses to receive. Which works for us because we tend to defer to the second half anyways.

Opening play the Defense is burned on a 15 yard end around play. Elliot destroys them for a gain of 20 on the third play. Had space for days & a hole you could sail a battleship though. UGLY starting drive for the Defense. Elliot stopped up the middle after a gain of seven on the Red Zone & he scores on the next play. Gonna be a long day at the office.

Redskins offense feeds Vernon Davis for a short gain to open, then converts with a Fat Rob catch. Rob grinds for three. Cousins on the run connects to DJax for 19. Great play by Kirk. Fat Rob to the left for no gain. Kirk connects to Reed for 3 yards. Third down with a LOUD crowd that Jordan Reed shuts up with a 12 yard gain. Kirk incomplete pass but Dallas is called for holding. Thompson stopped for a loss of three. Kirk under pressure throws it incomplete to avoid a sack & the OL is called for holding. 2nd & 23. Thompson up the middle for 3. Dumb call as it says we're gonna play for the field goal. Kirk connects with Crowder for 1 yard. 4th & 16. Hopkins on for a 43 yard FG attempt. Redskins take a time out. Kick is wide left & no good which is weird because Hopkins was nailing 40-50 yard kicks in warm ups.

:1386: SECOND QUARTER

Redskins start the 2nd quarter in the Red Zone. They go three & out & Jordan Reed is Down in the back of the End Zone. Reed is helped up & walks off on his own. I exhale the breath I'd been holding. Hopkins in for the field goal & its good from 24 yards out. Redskins have got to start getting into the end zone if they're gonna pull out the upset here. Reed is questionable with a left shoulder injury.

Redskins Defense seems to have tightened up some. Dallas is no longer running for huge chunks of yardage. Mid drive the Defense gets a sack & Dallas is called for holding. 3rd & 14. Defense gets torched by Beasley. I was worried about Fuller being on him & he got toasted for a gain of 18. Barry needs to make an adjustment here pronto. Prescott overthrows Butler in the end zone. 3rd down again. Norman drops a defected Pass to Dez.  Cowboys take the field goal & its 10-3 in a game that feels like it should probably already be tied up at 21.

:1386: AT THE HALF

After each team's opening drive of the Second Quarter, both offenses seem evenly matched. The only big difference is Dallas is getting the bulk of their yards on the ground while the Redskins are getting theirs through the air.  The big story here so far is the Redskins inability to get into the end zone. Three drives in the first half & they settle for field goals, where they missed 2 out of 3 of them. Leaving points on the field, on the road, against a Divional rival is completely unacceptable. The Defense got carved up on the opening drive, but tightened up after that. They still allowed several chunk yardage plays, but they kept them more limited on completing those after the opening drive where they were gutted at will. Then the Two Minute Warning happened & they unloaded the next play for a touchdown to take a 17-3 lead with 1:45 on the clock. Skins best bet is to play the sidelines for chunks, put the ball in the end zone for 7 & run out the clock, going to the locker room down only by 7 since they get the ball to start the 2nd half. Almost. They managed everything but the touchdown & again settle for a field goal. At least they managed to make that one. It's 17-6 Dallas at the half.

:1386: THIRD QUARTER

Redskins can't get anything going to open this half. However, Jordan Reed is returning to the game. On the Cowboys first drive, the Defense leaves a gaping hole underneath & Witten makes them pay for it. Dallas starts picking up 9 & 10 yard chunks again. A holding call backs them up to their 46 & its 1st & 20. Written picks 8 & the Redskins burn their first time out. A turnover would help. Skins need some kind of spark to get back into this. Only down by 11, this offense can overcome that if they can get into a good rhythm. Down, 18, that's a different story. Bree land breaks up a deep sideline shot to Williams on 3rd down. Dallas forced to punt with Crowder back to receive. Fair catch, Skins at the 10. HAVE to get 7 here. Skins get to midfield, hit a 4th & 2, convert it, continue to march into field goal range & chew up the clock. Kirk hits the fade to Reed for a first down at the 3. A touchdown here & it's a football game. A field goal & it could be the season. Skins have chewed up over 10 minutes in this quarter.

:1386: FOURTH QUARTER

TOUCHDOWN JORDAN REED!!! We got a football game now. Skins down by 5 go for 2. The attempt is picked off by Sean Lee. It's 17-12 Dallas with 14:54 left. Elliot gets a 21 yard chunk of burnage followed by a catch for 19 yards & Dallas is at the 35 in two plays. Elliot finally stopped for a gain of 1. Beasley burns the D for 12. Dallas scrambles, knocked out of bounds by Breeland. Dez over the middle, tackled by Norman after a gain of 13. Ball at the 6. Day runs it in for the touchdown. Dallas struck quick & efficiently in answer to the Redskins time consuming last drive. 75 yards in under 5 minutes to the the Skins 90 yard 10 minute drive. 24-12 Dallas. 10:49 left on the clock.

Cowboys34.jpg

DJAX ****es!!! Helluva throw by Cousins 67 yards down the sideline touchdown DJax, kick is good & Skins are back to being down by 5. Skins just went 3 plays 75 yards in under 2 minutes for that score. Skins with the onsides kick, Dallas recovers.

Cowboys40.jpg

9:21 on the clock. If there was ever time for a Norman pick six, this would be it. Instead Dallas runs it to keep the clock running. They pick up a personal foul penalty & two plays later, Elliot is in the end zone, but wait, Dallas gets called for holding.  2nd & 10. Foster with the duplex takedown on Elliot, no penalty & the Dallas media behind me is crying about it. And then Elliot is in the end zone again two plays later. It's 31-19 Dallas with 6:29 left. Skins are forced to do what they do best now. Throw it. The Crowder/Reed show gets them across mid field, only thing stopping them was a false start penalty. A Reed strip fumble recovered for a Dallas TD is ruled incomplete pass. Next pass is to Crowder for 10. Skins convert a 4th & 1. Ball at the Dallas 29. 3:32 on the clock. Cousins hits Crowder again for 9. Cousins incomplete to Grant in double coverage in the end zone. Cousins keeps it up the middle 1st down. Cousins to Thompson gain of 3. Cousins to Reed, 1st & goal at the 8. 2 minute warning. Touchdown Jordan Reed, his second for the day. Kick is good, it's 31-26 Dallas with 1:53 left. Beasley back for Dallas as the Skins go for the onsides kick again. Ball goes out of bounds, Dallas ball at the 47. Ugh. 1:51 left on the clock. Joe Barry needs to dial up a turnover here because this down by 5, down by 12 back n forth scoring bit has gotten old. Instead Dallas comes out running the ball to kill clock, skins burn a timeout. Beasley with an 8 yard catch, Elliot up the middle, clocking running, Skins call a 30 second timeout. 2nd & 8 with 55 ticks left on the clock. Prescott takes a knee 3rd & 9. Clock runs out. Game over.

:1386: FINAL THOUGHTS

One, Cousins ain't going anywhere. He's gonna get paid.

Secondly, we need to quit paying Joe Barry. He's had more then enough time to scheme up answers for guys like Elliot & Beasley. At times, the defense could hold Elliot for short gains but they couldn't effectively take him out of the game.

Play calling was questionable today & deservedly so. The run up the middle on 3rd & long, the 2 point conversions, the first onsides kick...The points left out on the field. Jeebus. That one kills me. It's a problem this offense has had going back to last offseason when the starters could never get a touchdown. Don't get me wrong, this is a VERY talented offense & coaching staff. It's kinda reminds me of the knock Kyle Shanahan had here, that whole "gets to smart for his own good" rep. Two seasons in & it's like they're still trying to figure out how to put together continuous complete games. But I'm telling you, when can do that, & have a top defense, this is team is gonna be really, really, good. They're close. They're not there just yet, but they've been knocking on the door of greatness, they just don't have the password to get in yet.

VICTORY!!!

Redskins 42 - 24 Packers

JimmiJo

Hello Brothers & Sisters, and welcome to another edition of Washington Redskins football. Tonight's episode features the Redskins hosting the Green Bay Packers.

My name is JimmiJo, and together with my partner of the ages, TheMurf, will bring you tonight's action.

The last time these teams met was in January in the the playoffs. Then, Green Bay left winners. Here's hoping it goes different tonight.

At 5-3-1, it is difficult to convince some that tonight's game is 'must-win.' But it is, given the state of the division. Despite the winning record, Washington sits at only third in the NFC East. And a win tonight will do nothing more than allow them to maintain the same position. But they must win to avoid last place and keep abreast of second-place 7-3 New York Giants.

Meanwhile the Dallas Cowboys are running away with the division and league. Their 9-1 record is good for first in the NFC East and best in the NFL.

The success (or lack thereof) of Washington's season rests on the next five days. Win tonight to stay three back of the Cowboys and a half-game behind the Giants; and then a chance Thursday to beat Dallas to gain a game and stop their momentum.

But no sense in looking ahead. If the Redskins don't win tonight, a victory Thursday will benefit New York as much if not more than Washington.

This is a winnable game for the Redskins. But not a definite. The Packers have been inconsistent, as their 4-5 record attests. But they can still do some damage.

Green Bay come in ranked 14th in offense, compared to Washington's 4th overall. But they own the 10th-ranked defense (meanwhile the Redskins defense ranks 21st).

The Redskins need to bring a high degree of urgency and focus to this game. It is a nationally-televised night game, which usually means disaster for the Redskins. Hopefully the home field advantage will help their cause.

We have been experiencing incredibly high winds in the region for the last 24-hours which are expected to persist until after midnight. The team that runs the ball better should have the edge. The Redskins rank 11th in rushing, better than the 19th-spot the Packers currently occupy.

Keys to Victory

- Run Forest Run!
- Ball control that translates to long drives for scores
- Containment defense that limits the big plays by the Packers
- Pressure Aaron Rogers

We are still about 2.5 hours away from kickoff. I will share any tidbits I come across.

Murf's Take

I'm not going to lie -- as someone who has spent more than 21 years serving in and with the U.S. Army, it brings a smile to my face whenever I see an organization like the Washington Redskins go out of their way to recognize veterans and active duty service members.

Clearly a primetime game against one of the NFL's most popular franchises was going to be a well attended game anyway, but making this game their "Salute to Service game," makes tonight's contest with the Green Bay Packers a little extra special, in my eyes at least.

And honestly, if this game didn't feel exactly like last year's 35-18 playoff loss, we'd all be thrilled to catch Aaron Rodgers and friends right now. But I was on the sidelines when a supposedly vulnerable opponent limped into town and pistol-whipped the Redskins back in January and I'm not going to fall for that act again.

So even though the Packers have looked like hot garbage for most of the season and they're giving up 35 or more points on seemingly a weekly basis now, I still refuse to underestimate them until Rodgers is no longer collecting an NFL paycheck.

That being said, even though their record during primetime games over the last decade or so is downright abysmal, it's not as if the Redskins have no chance this evening. For starters, since Week 7 last season, Kirk Cousins has outplayed Rodgers. Don't believe me? Here are the numbers:

Cousins has completed 69.5 percent of his passes while averaging 287.5 yards per game, throwing 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for a 106.2 quarterback rating.

Rodgers has completed 60.1 percent of his passes while averaging 249.5 yards per game, throwing 38 touchdowns and 13 interceptions for a 87.7 quarterback rating.

So while conventional wisdom tells you to take Rodgers over Cousins all day every day, the numbers show that Captain Kirk has been playing at an outstanding level for more than a year now. Tonight I fully expect tight end Jordan Reed to get back into the end zone too. He's been too quiet for a guy with such a ridiculous talent, so I fully expect him to get going against a beatable Green Bay defense.

This is also the type of game I'd expect to see Jamison Crowder thrive in. His speed and elusiveness give defenders fits, and the Packers are pretty mediocre on the defensive side of things, so hopefully Crowder keeps his string of solid performances going.

Finally, I'm thrilled that the Matt Jones era seems firmly behind us. Nothing that guy did ever gave me reason to believe he was anything more than "just a guy." Now that "Fat" Rob Kelley has taken over the primary running back duties, there's actually a reason for the playcallers to throw in a carry or two every now and then.

On defense I want to see what else Sua' Cravens has in store for us all. The more he's on the field, the more chances he's got to make plays. Considering how much he's been able to impact things in his limited reps, I'm truly excited to see what else he can make happen out there.

I'm also encouraged by Preston Smith's showing against Minnesota. He was too good last season to be so nonexistent this year, so it was nice to see him finally begin to make his presence felt once again. Finally, safety Duke Ihenacho has quietly been playing very well of late. I'm hoping to see his strong play rewarded with a turnover or impact play this evening. That's what I'm looking for tonight.

Now I'm headed down to the field level to go freeze my tail off in hopes of getting some halfway decent photos for you guys.

Pregame

Interesting pregame interview of Kirk Cousins with Bob Costas. Especially the post-interview comments. Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison lavished Cousins with praise, saying he should be in Washington for a long time.

But in truth I am not sure the Redskins front office is totally sold on Cousins, even now. I get the sense they may feel there is something better on the horizon, though I am not sure what else they expect him to show, or who else is out there? I am not much on college ball so perhaps someone can tell me if the upcoming quarterback class is a good one.

Cousins currently ranks 7th among active quarterbacks. He has thrown 14-touchdowns against only 7-interceptions. He has a 66.9-percent completion percentage on the year for a 94.8 QB rating. Best of all, they seem to win when he plays.

Maybe it's a head game to keep Cousins grounded. But I have to believe he is the quarterback of the future here.

Here's to a good game, with no injuries. Talk to you at the half

Half

Redskins should be up big here. But thanks to early drops by DeSean Jackson and Jordan Reed they spent the first quarter punting to each other.

Also don't get the go-for-2 after the second TD. A four-point lead means they need a touchdown instead of a game-tying field goal. That said, the long snapper is out for this game so they are understandably nervous.

Washington gets the ball to start the half, A touchdown drive should signal the beginning of the end for the Packers.

And let me add - the Redskins are the better team tonight. Let's get this.

Could not have been more impressed with the Redskins tonight. Every time there was anything remotely resembling controversy, the Redskins came back and put their stamp on it. The Redskins whooped some monkey-ass. Don't believe me? Look at the stats:

Kirk Cousins - 21/30 for 375-yards and 3 touchdowns for a qb rating of 145.83 (Not an misprint)
Rob Kelley -  24 carries for 137 yards and 3 touchdowns (all-star numbers)

Aaron Rogers 26/41 for 351-yards, 3 touchdowns and a QB rating of 114.9
Aaron Rogers - 3 for 33-yards and 0-touchdowns.

And let's take a broader look

Total Net Yards Redskins 515 - Packers 424
Rushing Redskins 151 - Packers 84
Passing Redskins 364 - Packers 340
First Downs Redskins 21 - Packers 19
3rd Down Efficiency Redskins 9/14 64% - Packers 7/15 46%
Red Zone Redskins 4/5 80% - Packers 2/4 50%

The Redskins won running away with this one.

Not to say Green Bay wasn't here to play. Only that the Redskins were more than ready. What I most appreciated was Washington's refusal to capitulate to the Packers. Last year the Redskins would have folded a few times inside of this game. Instead the Redskins responded to each and every challenge.

I was super impressed with Kirk Cousins tonight. Not sure what else he needs to do to earn a long-term contract, but tonight he did a lot to help himself. He was confident and effective. Take back a couple of obvious drops and his numbers look even better. It is getting more and more difficult to argue he should not get paid. As in the big bucks,

Washington needed this win in the worst-way and they got it. But no matter how big tonight felt, it still only keeps the Redskins par with the rest of the NFC East. It does give them good momentum going to Dallas for Thanksgiving.

Win that one and people will be talking.

Excited for the win. Hope this carries over to Dallas. Let's go team!

ES Coverage Redskins vs Vikings

VICTORY!!!

Hello Brothers & Sisters! JimmiJo here, joined by Spaceman Spiff, and together we bring you ES coverage of today's match between the Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings. The weather is picture perfect; a bright, clear fall day with temps in the high fifties. Probably low-sixties by kickoff.

I see these teams as similar in stature, though not in circumstance. Minnesota is 5-3 and leading the NFC North, by virtue of bye-week and one fewer losses in the division (Detroit is 5-4). Washington is 4-3-1 and in third place in the NFC East. But in terms of overall quality I see both as near-equal. Minnesota has better offensive and defensive lines while Washington has much better skill-position players.

The bookies see it the same way, with the Redskins getting the obligatory 2.5-points for home field.

At the half-way point, this is a game Washington very much needs. It is important for them to stay within shooting range of the streaking Dallas Cowboys. That said, Washington has done ok by themselves in beating both New York and Philadelphia. All the Redskins need to do is play well and they will be relevant in December.

I am hoping Washington enters this game with a high degree of urgency. Since I no longer cover the midweek open locker rooms, I cannot give you any feel I have for temperament. But they need to play as if their hair is on fire.

This is a home game and the Redskins need to take full advantage of the crowd. I was surprised walking in by the number of Minnesota jerseys at the tailgates. But there will still be more Redskins fans and the team needs to keep them in it.

:1386: Keys to victory

- Strike early - Washington needs to first-drive score to set the tempo. If they win the toss or if the Vikings defer, they need to take advantage and put Minnesota back right-away
- Pressure - Sam Bradford is arguably the comeback player of the year so far. Washington needs to make sure he is uncomfortable from the opening whistle. Sacks. Hurries. Hits. They all work.
- Limit the big play - Defensively, the Redskins need to force the Vikings into playing small-ball and not give up the big explosive plays on defense.
- Turnovers - Get and don't give please

:1386: Half

Penalties, turnovers, and giving up the big play. All the things we said they had to avoid.

Let's hope the missed PAT comes back to haunt them...

I like the way this team does not fold when they get behind in a game. I asked Jamison Crowder how confident they were once the Vikings took the lead and he said very. There seems to be a belief about this offense that when they need a drive they can get one. That said; I'm not sure the same may be said about generating a touchdown instead of a field goal.

Washington once again jumped out to a good lead scoring two to go 14-0. But as has been the case many times this year, they became lackadaisical and allowed the opponent to score thrice to get back in the game and take the lead.

I asked head coach Jay Gruden if he ever tells the offense it would be nice to not be chewing on his nails at the end of a game. He said; "Yes, but they would find a way to make it interesting anyway."

I also asked Gruden and Crowder about the sense of urgency coming in to this game. Both suggested from here on out they need to play with a high degree of urgency. Crowder said it seemed like a playoff atmosphere for the offense and that giving this is the back-half of the season - every game is a must-win deal.

I tweeted in-game how I was unimpressed with the Minnesota offense. That was before they went 3-for-3 on touchdown drives to end the first half. Once again, it seemed as if in-game adjustments were favoring the opponents.

But Washington appeared to make some of their own over the half and shut down the Vikings the rest of the way. The gem of a defensive effort was highlighted by Preston Smith's athletic interception of Sam Bradford late. Smith's momentum should have carried him past the ball, which was thrown behind him to a Minnesota receiver. Smith was able to reach back and tip the ball up to himself, then return the pick for 22-yards.

Smith also led the team in sacks on the day, registering 2 in addition to 2 tackles and an additional 2 assists.

Offensively, the Redskins posted another solid day.

- Kirk Cousins went 22/33 for 262-yards, 2 touchdowns and a rating of 110.9.
- Rob Kelley logged 97-yards on 22-attempts with a 4.4 yards-per-play average.
- Pierre Garcon led receivers with 6-catches for 81-yards.
- Jamison Crowder showed some skills with 4-catches for 37-yards and a touchdown.
- Veteran tight end Vernon Davis pulled in 3 for 66-yards, none more important than the 38-yard touchdown pass from Cousins

I wrote pregame I considered these to be two evenly matched teams. The statistics support this:

First downs: Redskins 23 - 22 Vikings
3rd Down Efficiency: Redskins 6-12-50% - 5-11-45% Vikings
Total Yards: Redskins 388 - 331 Vikings
Rushing: Redskins 128-yards - 47-yards Vikings
Passing: Redskins 260-yards - 284-yards Vikings
Red Zone: Redskins 1-4 25% - 2-2 100% Vikings
Time of Possession: Redskins 29:56 - 30:04 Vikings

Bottom line is this was a game the Redskins had to have to stay current with the division. The Eagles beat a very good Atlanta today and Dallas in hanging in with Pittsburgh as I type. Washington does not have the luxury of letting games slide.

The Redskins face a struggling Green Bay Packers next Sunday in another home game they really need to win. The way Washington has been playing (and the way the Packers have been reeling) you feel like it is one the Redskins can win. But it is a night game and Washington historically has been that side struggling teams get better on.

Either way, I will once again be with you to witness the action.

Redskins win. Time to celebrate.
