Westworld - Season 2 Discussion *SPOILERS*

Recommended Posts

Westworld Season 2 premiered last night on HBO. More than most other shows, Westworld seems to go out of it's way to cater to those that love digging into every little detail and quote for the clues to the puzzle. Season 1 was outstanding in the mystery of it all, unlike anything I've watched before. That in mind, I thought we could have a thread to keep all thoughts, questions, theories etc contained.

Here are the season 1 recaps and season 2 trailers:

----------------------

Ok, so how about that opening episode? It was great way to kickoff the season, picking up right in the aftermath of season 1's explosive ending.

Things we learned:

1. The park is on an island in what seems to be off the coast of China

2. There are multiple parks, at least 6

3. There are multiple timelines again. By my count, at least 3:

          a. Bernard waking up on the beach 11 days after the end of season 1

          b. Bernard and Hale escaping the night of the season 1 ending

          c. Arnold (maybe Bernard) discussing his dream with Delores before Arnold's death?

         d. Not shown until the next episode preview but we see young William again so at least 30 years ago

4. The hosts have core-like brains inside them that can be removed and extracted

5. Delos is compiling DNA from the guests in the park

6. Stubbs survived his attack from Season 1

7. A bengal tiger from another park was found dead in Westworld. How is this possible? Do the parks border one another?

8. Delos is still trying to extract Abernathy, the host with all the data/IP from the park uploaded into him

9. Bernard apparently kills all the hosts in the park at some point in the next 10 days? This is unclear. Also, unclear how they were killed and where that massive body of water came from. Did somebody flood that valley, killing them all?

Theory time! ok, mostly just observations so far.

Bernard, at this point, strikes me as an unreliable narrator in a story. When he wakes up he's in a daze and completely confused by everything going on. In the early timeline he falls and hits his head, leaking come coolant and also nearly loses it. I'm not sure we can trust what we see in those scenes with him, when it is showing us his perspective.

It seems Delos is compiling DNA from the guests. This is an insanely expensive park ($30,000+ per day?) so only the wealthiest and most powerful people in the world can come here. They could be collecting their DNA to make hosts to replace the real people and gain control of whatever companies or politics these powerful guests are involved with.

I noticed that Ford's corpse had maggots in his shot out eye socket. This would seem to confim that he was a human and not a host, as many have theorized. However, the bengal tiger from another park is presumably a host, as all the animals in the park are understood to be, and also was decomposing and appeared to have maggots on it's body. This could be a subtle wink that Ford still isn't necessarily a human.

I'll watch again tonight and see if i pick up anything else. I will say, the scope of the first season seemed much larger. I hope that this entire season won't be simply to reveal what happened in the 11 days after season 1 when Bernard wakes up on the water. I think we will see more flashbacks to young William possibly taking control of Delos and fully becoming the Man in Black. I also hope to see more of a young Ford and what his actual plan/game currently is. Maybe see why he ended up agreeing with Arnold after his death and setting all these events in motion over the last 30 years.

Pretty interesting episode.    My brother and I rewatched the previous season earlier Sunday before watching the first episode of season 2.   I saw a lot of discussion of who the zoomed in person in the water was.  Some people seemed to think it was the stable boy and others said it was Teddy.  (My brother was telling my this morning that it was Dolores, I couldn't tell, but didn't think it was a woman.)

It was definitely Teddy. HBO released an episode summary and it confirmed Teddy among the hosts in the water at the end

Awesome episode. Loved all the flashback stuff of Delos and the investment and buildup to what we saw last season with Logan, then what happened after they got back. That dinner party demonstration was probably my favorite scene

so it seems that old man Delos, Logan’s dad was dying. I think he might have been turned into a host. That’s why he made he comment about he didn’t have as much time for patience. If it was just about investing and money, I doubt he cares at that point. His time was runnin out and was waiting for William/Ford/Westworld to develop the tech further so he could become a host. We know they are capable of taking DNA so that could make sense.

We know people in the outside world don’t get sick anymore, yet, Mr Delos was sick 30 years ago. What changed in that time? Uploading sick people into a host body of themselves so they can continue to live? It would also explain Logan’s rant about the end of humanity.

I’m not sure how I feel about this or what it means in the big picture. It seems clear they are also using the park to blackmail rich and powerful guests which is what William pitched to Mr Delos so there are a couple of different things going on.

My mom loved the first season, but turned this one off saying it was too confusing and too violent.  I'm committed enough to push through it, will watch second episode tonight, but ya, they need to be careful with this multiple timeline thing so it doesn't become too confusing.

I actually thought it started to make a little more sense this past episode, but maybe that's just because it's one episode removed from getting back into the swing of it. The "weapon" is interesting. I stupidly went looking and read a theory about what it is that makes a lot of sense, based on what was in this past episode.

What does technology always lead to?Military advancements and quests for power.

I think the real thin William has done and what sold Delos on the idea is that they have either been replacing humanity with hosts secretly or secretly building a host army. This is what Logan meant about the end of humanity . They could be using the host replacements to control powerful companies and countries or threatening these places with host armies.

That’s what William created that is his cursed judgement and his greatest failure. It’s also what he showed Delores and why she thinks the hosts have even a sliver of chance against the rest of humanity.

Where they are going is some type of control room where they can take over these hosts. When William showed Delores what he was building it could have been the control room or the lab/bunker where they are making this army.

Anything else and I’m not sure this host rebellion lasts more than 15 minutes realistically. They’d be squashed instantly just based on the numbers of humanity.

I got the feeling that they intentionally had Delos wheezing and coughing to show he was sick, and that they were hinting at testing him living on as a host in the real world.

i'm beginning to think those scary looking ghost nation braves are actually saving guests. That lady is very lucky.

Thats what I’m thinking too. They’re a program designed to save guests in a catastrophe. Possibly why Delores doesn’t think they are worthy

also, it’s interesting to see that delores is basically both Delores and Wyatt. This is coming to a head soon enough because Teddy has only ever had two narratives/functions: protect Delores in the homestead narrative and kill Wyatt in the Wyatt narrative. We already see him starting to turn against Delores

also, look at how Teddy described Wyatt in season 1. Sounds a hell of a lot like delores...

Quote

Wyatt was my sergeant. My friend. Well, then everything changed. Wyatt disappeared while out on maneuvers. He came back with some strange ideas. Claimed he could hear the voice of God (Teddy, episode 3) (...) He told me he needed me. I couldn't resist. It was like the devil himself had taken control of me. We mutinied. We killed every soldier. And then Wyatt killed the general. Then he turned on me

A bit annoying how Hale seems practically untouchable through all the chaos and people getting shot every episode.

I only noticed it last night when she escaped on horseback. It didn’t bother me too much but she definitely had some plot armor. Could have shot that a touch better to clean up that feeling

unrelated: Steven Ogg is wonderful. His immediate turn to a chivalrous woman defender was awesome. Him chasing after her “I’ll protect (or escort?) you!” was hilarious. Now we see why the different personality in the premiere when he took a bullet defending a woman host.

This episode seemed more straightforward. Not sure what to make of the RajWorld woman that escaped into Westworld. People are speculating it’s williams daughter but that would be hella-convenient so I’m not sure

I kind of love her. Through all of this she's been consistently the same person. **** is falling apart and she keeps herself together better than the hosts.

Def need to rewatch it and pause to see the notebook of that woman.
