So, I don't know the particulars of the contract in full. I don't know everything as a matter of fact. But the reports are that Jon Gruden signed a 10 year deal worth 100 million dollars.

Apparently no NFL coach has been offered a 10 year contract within the last 30 years. Apparently that hasn't happened for "29 years," according to Adam Schefter. The 10 year contract is worth at least 100 million dollars, maybe more, per Schefter, again.

All we know is that Mark Davis just went FULL .............. you fill in the blank. Genius? Soft-headed?

So why does this thread exist?

Well, a 10 year contract seems to fly affront to some of the more accepted narratives that are applied to the NFL by many message board warriors, namely, that the NFL is a year to year league. And everybody, therefore, whether that be the Head Coach or the Franchise QB, are all on "one year deals."

Does Gruden cover?

The soon to be Las Vegas Raiders are appropriately moving to sin city because I'm sure there are bets being placed right now, out there, as to whether Gruden ever sees this contract through to all 10 years.

My guess is no.

What would an Albert Haynesworth coaching moment be? Because this is the most Albert Haynesworth type signing I've ever seen for a coach.

I can guarantee two things will happen this next season with the Raiders. First, the Raiders will draft SOMEONE from North Dakota State just so that he can slap a North Dakota Strong sticker on his locker. Second, he will start every game with "Spider 2 Y Banana" because he can't go a game without talking about it.

After every loss, his catchphrase will not be "we need to look at the tape.". It'll be "we needed to come out North Dakota Stronger."

I'm surprised Grudes left his cushy gig at MNF to coach again, but when you get $100 Million how can you say no?

Given the financial restraints the four letter network has been dealing with over the past few years, its actually not surprising. Based on a quick google search, Gruden is under contract thru 2021, making about 6.5 m a year. Hes currently the highest paid on air employee. Bspn's rights deal with the NFL runs thru 2021, and if they aren't interested renewing the deal, they probably gave Gruden the heads up. He walks, they save some bucks, and Gruden has job security for the next decade.

Before or after he hires his own brother as offensive coordinator?

That wont end poorly.  Jay is very good at what he does.

I dunno. After seeing Mike and Kyle coaching together, along with both Rex and Rob Ryan coaching together, I think hiring a family member to be your coordinator is a move that is very open to criticism. If Jon Gruden doesn't get back into shape after his 9 year break, I can see it getting ugly, even with Jay there.

I like Gruden a lot.  Not sure how you can like football and not like Jon Gruden.

That said, is he really THAT good?  Yes, he had some good Raiders teams, won a title with Dungy's team but then he had some really bad years in Tampa, too.

Reggie McKenzie is under contract as Raiders GM through 202.

However, while we talk about Jay possibly going to Oakland at some point, is there a chance of Jon and Bruce Allen reuniting?

Walk the dog? Feed the cat? Sit with Grandma? Anything. I'll do anything to get Bruce the hell out of here.

I bet that at some points in his 10 years Jay is his OC.  Probably 2021-ish.  I think Jay is here for 3 more years.

More than likely, Jay is gone after next season.

I don't think so.  I think they rock with Colt this season, it stinks, and then he and Bruce get a chance to draft their own guy and groom him for 2 more years.

There is no accountability.

(Except, I might just do that.)

We will see.  With the NFL nowadays, any punishment or no punishment wouldn't surprise me.

Really?  He's got his best QB in Carr since he was with Gannon.  Saw one article where Mark Davis denied giving Gruden final say on personel, which was a weakness.  Gotta expect them to do well or better on offense, but trusting FO to fix the defense may be suspect.

Mark Davis looks like a middle aged Bucky Larson.

This move is less about winning than about PR. It's giving loyal Oakland fans a nice parting gift, and it's going to sell a lot of PSLs in Vegas. The guy is 95-81 as a head coach. Not exactly worth $100 million, IMO.

That said, he's a fun guy, and good for football.

Lucky for him he is going I to a ready made situation largely. He'll  need to give Carr a deneuralizer for '17s performance, but everything else can be fixed pretty easily. I think he will be fine for the first few years. A 10 yr contract for a hc is just insane though, and there is no way he makes it to the end of that
