If he took that long off and was that off in determining when he could play again, then I've lost any belief he could ever return to even being competitive.

How did he mess that up? Wow.

He also will not play in the Turkish airline event

According to Bob Harig, Tiger's game is just not there. I personally think the guy should just retire. He's never getting back to that top echelon of golfers again. He's doing nothing but embarrassing himself, at this point.

The funny thing is that he has no reason to race back. He took the year off, he was able to pick a return point and go for it.

What makes it so worrisome (if you're rooting for his return) is that a week ago he announced, out of nowhere, he's playing. And now he's not. That's quite a quick change of mind...

I'd love to see him play at a top level again. I know he can't do it consistently, but if he gets back to playing every week we're bound to be treated to a great performance here and there.

The man has ten years of eligibility left in a sport that Phil can still thrive in.  I can't imagine the guy ever dominates the sport again but he has no reason to race back.

This may be true, but Phil has a swing that doesn't put a lot of stress on the body, especially the back. Bubba Watson is the same way. So yeah, Phil is having success at 46. He'll continue to do so unless his arthritis acts up on him. Phil hasn't and probably won't have any major injury issues. The only one I can remember is a wrist issue caused by some rough at Oakmost the previous time (not this past year) was super long and thick. Tiger won't experience that because of his swing. Many of these new guys will be the same way. Day, Rory, DJ, etc. won't have long, successful careers because they'll shred their backs. The one exception may be Spieth and that's just because he doesn't have a swing speed of 120 mph.

If Tiger can get to the point where he's fully healthy and can play everyday with nothing hurting, then he's totally going to be back winning events on tour.  He just hasn't been healthy enough to put in the needed practice the last few years.  It's all about the repetitions.  I'm glad he decided to back out of the Safeway Open.

I don't know if he'll ever win majors again, but he can get around Augusta based off memory.  If there's a major he can snap off while not being on top of his game week in and week out, it's the Masters.  Maybe he'll give us a Jack moment in a couple of years.

I'm really not sure what hitting the ball so far gains you.  IMO you only need to be able to hit the ball far enough... the importance of the short game is far more relevant

But when these guys are hitting their 3 or 5 wood 350 yards... why?  Just hit your driver that far.

But admittedly I don't watch a lot of golf.  Maybe I'm missing something - maybe you DO need to hit that far nowadays.  But the stress it puts on your back and knowing you're going to be a cripple by the age of 40, what's the point?

You definitely have to hit it that far nowadays.  You can't be hitting 4 and 5 irons into a green when others are hitting 8 or 9 irons.  That's a huge disadvantage.

If you watch Henrik Stenson - he loves his 3 wood and smokes that thing.  But it's going the same distance as most player's drivers.

For amateurs, distance really isn't that important.  I've been spanked by old men that swing about 10mph and hit driver 150 yards.  Simply because they keep it straight and have a great short game.

For pros and aspiring pros, it's incredibly important.  When you are hitting into lightning fast greens, with crazy undulation, false fronts, etc. - it's a huge advantage to be hitting a shorter club with more loft.

If you're in the Northern Virginia area, might want to get in a round at Virginia Oaks in Gainesville. Very nice course, good championship distances. Haven't played there in a few years since I am down in FL now, but you won't be disappointed.

I live right near here.

The course just changed management and they're working on fixing it up. It went down hill over the last few years.

For the most part it's OK now, especially given the price. They had to cut prices drastically because the online reviews of it have been pretty bad lately. You can get a round in for < $30 right now, and that's a steal considering how much everywhere else here costs.

The only really bad thing I've found, and I've played 4 times this summer, is that many of their sand traps are full of rocks :(

Yeah, Virginia Oaks has not been very good the past few years.  Hopefully they can right the ship.

Where does everyone play regularly?

My friends and I play 4-6 times a month.  The courses we frequent the most are Lansdowne (I get a sweet hookup), Twin Lakes, Algonkian, South Riding, Pleasant Valley, and Brambleton.  We have push carts so we walk the **** out of Twin/Donk/Brammy.

I'm in Harpers Ferry, WV so I rarely get out to NOVA for play.  I've played Raspberry Falls (on a hot deal from GolfNow), Goose Creek (before it closed down), Brambleton and Westpark.  Obviously Raspberry Falls was the best, but its not fun to pay 100 to shoot 100.  Very tough course.

My son is in the First Tee at Locust Hill GC in Charles Town, WV.  Great course, extremely well maintained - even now considering the lack of rain through August and September.  For those of you in NOVA looking for a cheaper place to play, I highly recommend it - it's not too far of a drive.  50 bucks on a Sat/Sunday morning and always 30 or less for twilight.  There are houses around the course but you've got to be pretty bad to hit one.  Very close to Hollywood Casino in Charles Town.  I see many guys out there on the weekend that drop their women off at the casino so they can swing.

On the weekends, we typically make the drive up towards the Front Royal area and play Shenandoah Valley.  We used to play Blue Ridge Shadows, but in between change of ownership, things fell apart.  Every bunker is a forest and if you're not in the fairway, good luck finding your ball anymore.

I work right across the street from Clustered Spires in Frederick, MD.  While this course is owned by Frederick County, it's by far the most well kept county owned course I've ever played.  Its hard to tell what time of year it is looking at the course and greens.  It's always in great shape and fairly priced as well.  Highly recommend it!

I play Bristow Mannor and Prince William Public the most. Played VA Oaks 4 times this year, like I said it was actually really nice minus the rocks in the traps, they actually reverted course design back to what it was ~5 years ago.

I try to avoid anything more than $80/round, my game simply isn't worth the money yet.

I'm down for anything around the area though. My problem is finding the time.

We should do an NOVA-ES golf outing one weekend next spring, before everyone's summers get jam packed.

(I suck at golf, I just enjoy playing it for some masochistic reason)

I'm about a 16.5 hdcp and my friends are around 11-13.  I know I'm not very good, but I love to play.  It beats what most other people do with their free time!  We try to keep it below $65ish when we go play, but will gladly splurge on a nice course if the opportunity presents itself.  I get spoiled by getting to play Lansdowne so often for only twenty-five bones.

dude's a machine.

Especially putting, even with that goofy grip (that I haven't even tried).  I've been telling hubby for a while about how automatic he is, and he was texting me ryder cup updates with how well Phil was putting..."damn, you were right, reads the greens better than Tiger", LOL...then when I got home he told me the story about Tiger & Phil being paired at the tourney when they didn't talk because of the Nike balls?

Btw, Maxfli 4.:)

I played a round with ex Baltimore Colt Tom Mattie yesterday at a golf tourney at Chartwell. Really good guy. I knew they paired me w a former NFL player, didnt know he was a former pro bowler and a 7th overall draft pick. Had some good stories about playing for Woody Hayes in Ohio State and McCaferty .. didnt mention Don Shula though. He really lit up when talking about going back and visiting Ohio State. Said he was in bad health the past year but you couldnt tell.

Pretty good golfer as well. He sunk a couple of long birdie putts for our foursome.

A lot of fun to play a round with.

edit - former Oriole joe orsulak (sp?) won the long drive comp. I hit a good drive but he out did me by 40 yards easy. I didnt see him out there though, just his name on the long drive sheet.
