Block whatever candidate the seating president proposes to the Senate until Jan 2017 when a new one comes to office.

And, the other side is happy because they believe they can get a liberal appointed.

Just a sad state of affairs in this country.  The hate is ____________.

Not a lefty at all, but you I don't know why there is a requirement to be nice to people in death that you thought were awful in life.

In particular public figures who had a significant impact on millions of people with his decisions

If you use that logic, everybody gets demolished after death. There are enough people you piss off that you will get trashed. He stuck to his principles. You don't have to agree with him, but he was VERY consistent.

Oh I agree with him on his principles, being very consistent and an outstanding writer.

However the guy was VERY consequential and his decisions had a major impact on the shape of this country.

If one didn't like the guy while he was alive and making decisions that one thought was abhorrent (which quite frankly some were), I don't understand why one would need to keep his mouth shut and honor the man because he passed away.

Raphael Cruz was very quick

Justice Scalia was an American hero. We owe it to him, & the Nation, for the Senate to ensure that the next President names his replacement.

Sri Srinivasan: Supreme Court justice in the making?

WASHINGTON — The issue before the Supreme Court was the Defense of Marriage Act, and the smooth-talking native of India representing the United States of America at the podium had a tough argument to make.

Why, Chief Justice John Roberts wanted to know, was the government not only refusing to defend the law, which denies federal benefits to legally married same-sex couples, but arguing the other side — all while continuing to enforce it?

From his post feet away from the nine justices March 27, Srikanth Srinivasan (SREE-kont SREE-nee-vah-sun) calmly explained what Roberts called a "totally unprecedented" situation. Along the way, the mathematics professor's son sprinkled in references to numerators, denominators and algorithms, the statutes 28 U.S.C. 530(d) and 28 U.S.C. 1254, and the precedents established by INS v.Chadha, United States v. Lovett and Turner Broadcasting v. FCC.

Without notes.

It was just the latest chapter in a stellar legal career that has taken the 46-year-old litigator known as "Sri" to a seat on the nation's second most powerful court — and given him instant buzz as a potential Supreme Court justice himself.

The Senate unanimously confirmed Srinivasan on Thursday as the first new judge since 2006 on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The vote was 97-0.

A stupid comment.  Scalia was just a guy that stood by his principles and did his job the way he wanted.  Agree or disagree with his decisions, that is all he did.

By this logic that waters down the definition of hero, you could start naming all kinds of people hero, including all the liberals on the court now.  Who stand by their principles and do their job.

Also, the comment from Cruz infers that the Senate should vote in the current president's choice to replace him.  That can almost be stated as a lie, especially if Obama chooses a liberal judge.

Agree. And Ted Cruz is a Canadian abomination.

OMG! How will Clarence Uncle Thomas know what positions he's supposed to take on the issues now?

Really? Was that necessary? Show a little respect. I know it's hard for you, but make an effort.

someone steeped in law could easily see him as a hero, or any other Justice.

RIP Scalia

That's an awful comment from Cruz. This could be an issue where the Republican candidates cement their position as partisan hacks rather than behaving like a President. It's expected to attack Obama and their Dem opponents, but openly screwing with the working of the Supreme Court likely won't play well with the middle of the American electorate.

Does the middle care? Honest question

And again, for my entertainment and interest this is who I hope gets the nomination

1) Hillary or Ted Cruz tonight

2) If Hillary, Biden enters the race tomorrow

3) If Cruz, Trump wraps up the nomination

4) President Obama resigns and has Joe Biden nominate him on January 19th 2017

My comments were not about Scalia, but about Cruz.  Again, hero is used incorrectly, or at least in my opinion, it is.  Not to bore with military heroes, or fireman going into building risking their life, etc, etc.  Scalia did his job and stood by his beliefs.  He did his job well and got elevated to the high court.   Call him a professional, say that he did an excellent job as a justice, and so on.  But he was not a hero.  Seriously, just start calling all the liberals that did their job, stood by their beliefs, were professional and rose up the ranks.

That he was influential does not translate into heroism.

Um, I'm pretty sure that Cruz just announced that the Senate should reject (or at least filibuster) WHOEVER Obama appoints.

“this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new President.” - Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell

Stupid, is what it is.  Unfortunately, like or dislike, there is a vacancy.  Can't just make up the rules.

So, if I don't like something, like say paying taxes, can I just not pay them until a new president comes in?  That new president might just wave all by taxes.  Yeah, I like it.  I won't pay any taxes, federal, state or local, and they can wait until 2017 to vote someone in.

Edit:  And the hypocrisy knows no bounds.  Darn it Obama, stop just making up the rules and doing what you want.  Appointing people without Congress approval.  So, we are going to wait a year to appoint someone to the bench so we can also make our own rules.
