Race and the Panthers

Ok, I started to post this in the "Around the NFL" section but then realized, its really at heart, a Tailgate post.

I've been listening to sports radio a lot as usual and one of the biggest topics is how everyone "hates" Cam Newton and his celebrating because he's black.

One of the examples used on the air yesterday was that no one has a problem with Tom Brady because he's white.

Really?

Really?

Wow.

First, let me give my take/opinion.  I didn't like Cam Newton in the beginning because of the scandal associated with him. Seemed like he was trouble.  I hated how he pouted after every game.  Seemed like everything was about him.  However, as time has gone on, I actually have a lot of respect for him. In press conferences, he says all the right things.  I love how he gives footballs to kids.  BUT, I do hate how he has to dance after every single thing.  This is not because its Cam Newton. I hate that in any QB.  I hated Aaron Rodgers discount double check BS, I hate Tom Brady's **** screaming and what not.  I realize that its just me and there are some who love those things.

But why are we racist just because we don't like that?  Why lump everyone in?  Tom Brady for example, he is probably the most hated player in the NFL.  On Facebook for example, all I saw were posts happy that Brady lost.  Lots of memes...

I know I'm old school. I Loved Barry Sanders for the way he celebrated...  Personally, for all the Panthers do good, I'm really turned off by the way they act on the field.

I got no problem with his TD celebrations.

I HATE his "I have to celebrate every rushing first down I get with a dramatic 'wait to make sure the camera is on me' point and dab" celebration.

The only time I don't "like" him is when he is putting both his feet up the Redskins ass.

I can agree here. The TD celebrations don't bother me as much as the other stuff.  I still prefer Barry Sanders style, but I'm the type who hates it when the defense has to celebrate every tackle... That's what you are supposed to do.  Its like the NFL is becoming WWE.

Cam Newton is a great player. I loved the Fun Bunch back in the day and I have no issue with Cams touchdown shtick.

Also, Barry Sanders was an overrated, soft player who couldn't catch, block or run between the tackles and quit on his team. He didn't celebrate touchdowns because he had no passion for the game and no connection to his teammates.

No one has a problem with Tom Brady?  It wasn't that long ago that the popular thing in the league was to absolutely hate Tom Brady and the Patriots. They were victims of their own success.  They won too much and they were as approachable as a pride of lions thanks to that hobo running the team.  The two cheating scandals and many losses in the superbowl have changed the tone.  Brady is not longer an arrogant jerk, people are tired of seeing win all the time.  He's now an arrogant jerk that can only win by cheating.  The point is that it's been a very long time since one could honestly say "no one has a problem with Tom Brady."

While I'm sure many people dislike Cam for logical reasons like the ones stated in this post, if you simply spend a little bit of time on social media then you will see the racial elements to the hatred.

The comments section on Facebook at times looks like the dialogue from a Klan rally.

Think about it like this, if you're black and live around/socialize with mostly blacks, and your primary exposure to white people is in the office and what you see on social media --- its not hard to imagine why the hatred appears racially motivated.  The comment section on social media is like the wild, wild west where Johnny from the job feels liberated to say what he really thinks.

Is it fair to say, "If you're white and live around/socialize with mostly whites, and your primary exposure to black people is in the office and what you see on the news---its not hard to imagine why the hatred appears racially motivated."

I'm H_H for the day.

Maybe he didn't celebrate TDs because it's actually classier not to? You score, hand the ball to the ref and get back to work.

I agree with Major...your 2nd paragraph couldn't be more wrong

I think the difference lies where I don't really see any black people in the comments section of a Peyton Manning article calling him a 'honky'.

As for the celebrating thing...

After you finish a report, or whatever it is you do for work, do you stand up, and dab?

These people made a business out of a sport...I get that celebrating is fun and keeps the fun in the game...but, this isn't dancing with the ****ing stars, you are not superman. Ya wanna do a celebration, then do something simple. The fun bunch thing was done as a team...the lambo leap is for the fans, giving out the football to a fan is cool...the rest...arroganT and stupid. It was funny a decade ago, now....just lame

I never had a problem with Newton before this season. I actually had a positive opinion of him because I thought he did great community service work with kids. I was always OK with him celebrating a TD by doing his Super Man shirt tear thing because that was his thing. These days, however, his celebrations are excessive and happen too often. I also hate that he takes thing from fans in the stands, like flags and banners, and throws them. He just seems arrogant and immature to me. My opinion of him has nose dived this season.

I could care less if he celebrates, dabs, etc.  I actually liked it back when Steve Smith, Moss, TO, Ocho Cinco, etc. would come up with the funny celebrations.  Thought some of that stuff was pretty darn funny.

If their employer doesn't care, why should I?  At the end of the day, it's just a game.  Them making millions to play it for our entertainment shouldn't even factor into this, imo.

As far as negativity towards Cam being racially motivated, there is always going to be uneducated idiots with sick/twisted points of view who just hate for that reason.  It's gotten a lot better, but we still have a long ways to go overall as a society.

Very fair comments. Let's face it, a lot of people are idiots. There are racists out there. But Just because we don't like how Newton acts "sometimes" doesn't make us racist.

I know people that like certain players because they are black. A friend of mine is a cowboys fan. But he loved RG3. He admitted it was because he's black. I hate Romo. He's white, I'm white. Listening to the Dan Lebatard show yesterday, I was offended. We can all come up with examples of this and that, but the fact that many don't like how Newton and the panthers act has nothing to do with racism, some just don't like show boating.

He totally missed the chance to name him "Fig"

You won the internets today.

I find him (and the whole panther team) very likeable this season.  They seem to have a sense of purpose, seem to like one another, and seem to be having a good time.  I may have missed it (haven't been following that closely), but I don't remember any big scandals or issues of criminality.

His celebrations seem to me to be just that - celebrations.  Not taunting, not really bad sportsmanship.

He's also been basically unstoppable.  Their offense is amazing to watch.  Super well-designed running game.  He's earned some celebrations.

I'm fine with him.  Wish he was on the Skins...

I don't like Cam, he just rubs me the wrong way. It's not race-related as I hate other random players in the league for no good reason too.

I can't stand JJ Watt (again, not sure why other than I assume he's an arrogant jerk). I don't like Gronkowski at all. I also hate Russell Wilson and Pete Carroll. I'm really starting to dislike Aaron Rodgers because he seems like a crybaby. I also imagine that Dez Bryant is a giant d-bag.

So, I guess that's a handful of guys who are black and handful who are white. I just don't like Cam Newton. I also find it hilarious that Mike & Mike have twice now (well, as of last week it was twice) read "hate mail" that was sent to him as though it's extremely over the top. I would venture to guess that almost EVERY high-profile athlete gets a couple mean letters or e-mails. I don't understand why we've chosen Newton to come in and defend so aggressively.

Back in college at Florida he bought a stolen laptop, got suspended from the team.  Went to junior college and then there were talks of his father asking Miss. State for money for Cam to go there.

Basically, dumb college ****.  When the cops tracked the laptop, he tossed it out the window in an attempt to hide it.
