SPOILERS: The Star Wars Force Awakens Discussion Thread - Warning-Haven't Seen the Movie? DON'T Click On This Thread

Ok, today is the day we finally get to see the movie, I figured we needed a thread where we could openly discuss the outcome and look forward to Episode VIII without fear of spoiling others.

If the Mods think this is not warranted, please delete, but again, I don't want to have to keep using the spoiler tags, I'd rather just speak openly.

Anyway....

The one thing we are left with after the TFA is Who is the parent of Rey?

Based on the fact that she doesn't recognize Han and Leia, that means it has to be Luke, right?

Of course I don't know this for sure, but, since Luke has NO dialog in the movie and we only see him at the very end when Rey gives him his (Anakin's) Lightsaber back, this is an open possibility.

In addition, in the book, Heir to the Jedi, which is new cannon, Luke clearly is about to have a relationship with a woman in the book, but she ends up dead. So clearly, Luke is open to romance.

I'm guessing she is Luke's daughter. Originally, I thought for sure that She was Kylo (Ben Solo's) twin sister, but it doesn't seem like that's the case.

Any thoughts?

But seriously, I haven't seen it and I won't hang out here much longer but I am so glad that Rey is not one of the Jacen and Jaina twins from the old EU.  First of all, I think it's important that Luke actually have an heir if he's not going to have a surviving academy.  To deprive him of at least some form of posterity seems a betrayal of his sacrifices in ANH-ROTJ.  Also, it shows that they're willing to play around with ideas from the EU without committing to them (and we hope) avoiding some of the issues.

Zahn's trilogy wasn't bad at all but I will always detest the idea of Force-bubble generating lizards.  Did Lucas approve that?

"Life creates it, makes it grow.  Its energy surrounds us and binds us...except when we get near these lizards, then you're out of luck"

I liked the Thrawn series as well but the force neutralizing lizards as well as Luuke, were 2 things that I hated. That's why I'm glad the EU was wiped out.

I agree as well that Luke has to have a kid. I'm hoping its Rey.

There's going to be some anger issues because if she is, she's going to be mad he left her on Jakuu

Ok so only thing I didn't understand was who the old guy at beginning is that Kylo kills? Was he important and I just missed it?

No idea & I was wondering the same. If Code doesn't know, I'm getting the damn book off of iTunes tomorrow. :D

He was a guy that was alive during the clone wars. He knows the whole story. He knows that Kylo is Ben Solo and everything that happened. Somehow he got the map showing part of where Luke was.

I'm sure we will get a novel to explain his back story.

My take gut take...

Very much enjoyed it. Initial impression was that it's second only to Empire, though with a bit of time I may re-evaluate that to being 3rd behind ANH as well. Definitely better than any of the prequel trilogies imho.

Only parts I really had a significant issue with:

The Star Killer base just felt so contrived and over done since we just go through two death stars in the original trilogy.

Snoke. Who the hell is he? How did he get into power? Where did he come from.

My other nitpicks are all things I'm not TOO worried about, because I have a feeling we'll get more in the coming films that will alter the perception:

Rey's power jump. My guess is this is the whole "force awakening" thing. Likely daughter of Luke, cousin of Kylo. The visions she had upon finding Luke's saber basically jump started her force awareness. It didn't feel bad, just a little weird and under explained, in this movie...but there were enough hints to make it at least plausible story wise and seems that their aiming to expand on it in the next film.

Captain Phasma. Seemed like a cool character that was severely under utilized. However, I have a guess they'll be pulling a bit of a Boba Fett thing where she's going to have a bigger part in a future movie.

I really enjoyed the new characters. The dynamic, especially the bickering, was good and felt closer to the feel of the OT than the prequels ever really did. Han was excellent and slipped right back into the role wonderfully, while at the same time you could sense that everything had really worn on him. BB-8 is INFINITELY better than Jar Jar as the "kid friendly" aspect, while Finn was significantly better as a bit of comic relief. Really enjoyed the character of Poe and the bit he was on screen really hammered home why he's regarded as what he is. Very much enjoy the unique sound and look of Kylo's light saber; makes it feel like it's definitely not an expertly done creation. General Hux, as secondary character, actually worked very well for me. Other than the one BLATANT one I referenced above, I loved a lot of the little nods and parallels to the original trilogy and ANH specifically. Mos was an awesome random new character and slid in wonderfully well. Speaking of, I very much enjoyed what seemed like a lot of practical effects aliens in her watering hole instead of CGI...it was clear they were going for a Mos Isley cantina feel and they did well with it. The fan service for nostalgia was definitely there, yet at the same time it felt like for the most part it had a very real purpose within the narrative.

Really enjoyed it.

As soon as Han went on the bridge I knew he was a goner. **** Kylo Ren

Also, he's a ****. Got outclassed by 2 people that had never even picked up a lightsaber 5 minutes before they fought him lol.

I think killing his father is going to turn him into a beast though.

I really wanted Luke to take the lightsaber at the end and turn it on and that be the final shot.

But wow, it was awesome

Just returned. Pretty Damn good. Surprised that I liked Daisey's performance. They made it more about her innate abilities with the force as opposed to the whole "big strong chick who's just as strong as the men" type character.

Things were just about perfect. Couple of questions though... Is Han really dead? I suppose it's possible that he survived, after all its not like he was decapitated. For all we know the bottom of that canyon is like the one in cloud city. Chewy survived so hopefully they can find a way to bring back Han too, perhaps with some sort of robotic stomach. They good medical technology over there.

One more question, how the hell did the millenium falcon still work after not flying for years?

Kylo Ren was good but a bit weaker than I expected. Vader's bloodline but had difficulty with Finn.

The points you bring up are my issues as well. In addition, on the Jedi counsel forums, others bring up those exact same points as well as a few others.

Snoke, not so much for me though, we are supposed to be left wondering, like the emperor. He looked too much like Gollum though. Could have done better with that. But love the mystery. Makes you want to find out if he's a Sith or what.

The star killer base, IMO was terrible. As it is, the plot is SO similar to ANH, they honestly didn't need a "bigger Death Star" to push the story. It is interesting and mysterious as it is.

I can understand Rey's jump to power. 9 year old Anakin was guided by the will of the force, he could pod race, destroy a droid command ship etc... I get that. Rey was a highlight for me. I thought she was pretty awesome.

So much to talk about. Bed time now. Can't wait to see it again this weekend.

I had a feeling it was gonna happen before even seeing the movie. Hoped it wouldn't though. But when Leia said that even Luke wasn't able to reach him & turn him back to the Light side I was all like mother****! They're gonna do it. That was the only thing that really pissed me off but afterwards for some reason I'm not that mad about it.

Rey was fantastic. She owned the movie.

Same here in that now that it's over, Im pretty much ok with it. They have to raise the stakes at some point.

Also, to the above question of if he might still be alive. Not only did he get I paled with a lightsaber and dropped 500+ feet as a non-force user, the entire planet he was only blew up as well. He's finished lol

Kinda like when they killed off Chewie at the start of the Vong war when that planet blew up.
