Redskins Looking To Re-Establish Rushing Attack

Recommended Posts

It looked like the basic plan was to double up on Kory and just bull their way through.the line. Lich had a long Sunday. I don't know that the linemen on either side of him were much help but it was definetely a learning experience. I did see Long well downfield on a couple of running plays. Great for a lead block but maybe not so much for getting the RB released.

It takes time for an OLine to get it together. Kinda like watching a kid learning to walk. Some stumbling and bumbleing but a few nice runs too.

I think it's more than the middle. It seems people are consistently getting penetration from all over. People are crowding the line. It's very difficult to run with 7 or 8 in the box. They are run blitzing and we are not accounting for the defenders.

We need to use PA on 1st and 2nd down much more. The seam routes and crosses should be open and when we hit several of those it will keep the S covering the middle of the field leaving 1 on 1 on the outside. It's one of the reasons we need DJax back. We also need a big physical WR. My expectation is we will be looking for one of those in the draft.

Getting back to run game, the play calling has to help the run game. We need to show them the passing game can hurt them. Think about it, in the philly drive we started with some good runs that were open because they expected us to pass. Then they had to bring guys up and that opened up the passing.

I am Jay G fan but him and McVay need to get a little more creative and more aggressive. It's time to take the training wheels off.

Let's be honest, this run game has been below average, to put it nicely, for the last 3 games. I'm actually starting to think that's what we really are, an average run team. We beat up the Dolphins and Rams, but both of them are proving to be poor rush defenses. Simply put, a strong running team doesn't get road blocked like we have for 3 games in a row.

Now, the Jets take their turn. It's an interesting matchup because we're similar teams. We both prefer a bruising, run-heavy offense with average QBs at the helm. If there's a game we can't be without DJax and Reed, it's this one. They will play the same way they have all year, shut down the run and rely on their great DBs to shut down in man coverage. Unless, out of nowhere, McVay runs this offense completely off of deception, I don't see us having the weapons (assuming DJax and Reed are out) to stay in this game.

When it comes to defense, the zone blocking has beaten us up. But, the power running, has been much less effective; the Jets are a power running team. I think we can keep their run game in check. We need Breeland on Marshall all day, assuming he's OK. He thrives when matched up with #1s. The issue is that the Jets also run a spread offense, using quick 3-step drops. Eli MURDERED us with that, so Barry better be whipping something up.

Bottom line is if we don't get healthy quick, we don't win this game.

I don't think we win this game anyway. The Jets are 3-1 and 8th in the power rankings. They have allowed the fewest sacks this year (3). And as CT says, their offense is similar to the Giants and they use Fitz the same way as Eli. He is not as athletic as Eli but with the protection they have given him he does not need to be.

If we are to win, the following has to happen:

1. we have to stop their run game. If they get anywhere close to 100 yds we lose, bad.

2. Our front has to get pressure. They may not get many sacks but we have to at least be in his face and cause some hurries and errant passes. Fitz is not as good under pressure as Eli is. We can get this guy rattled.

3. We have to be more creative on Off. We still can be balanced, but lets not run every first down! Mix it up! Also, even if you have to use DY, live in some 31 personnel. When we had more healthy TEs this was a good look for us. EDIT: Part of our passing attack should our backs out of the backfield. This is one of the Jets biggest weakness.

4. We have to win the TO battle. I know this is obvious but it's way too important.

5. Last but not least - Not STs ****-ups!!!!!!! They thrive on STs and can turn the field or score in a second.

I honestly do not think we can do any of these things except maybe 2 and possibly 3. Unfortunately I see us getting behind early and lose badly making it close with some garbage points in the 4th Q. Outside of the QB position and with an injured Julio Jones, the Jets are a better team than Atlanta.

This could be very ugly.

The Jets are almost completely healthy while we may be playing with half of our starters, literally. Even if it was full squad vs full squad, this would be a real tough game to come away with the W.

Although I am pessimistic about the overall outcome, I'm not sold that this will be a blowout. Mainly because I think our D is capable of shutting down Fitzmagic. Old terrible-beard forces a lot of throws. We need to take away the run game and force him to throw.

On offense, we need to run the ball. The Jets aren't the best run D, they're 8th. And look who've they played- Browns, Fins, Eagle, Colts- the best rush offense out of that group is rated 22nd. I'm not saying we can run over them, but I'm more optimistic than I was before I stumbled upon those stats. As we saw with the Eagles, when we stuck to the run, it opened up play action and deceptive plays with Crowder... A win will rely on creativity.
