I admit, I was wrong about Joe Barry

After yesterday's game in which we held the #1 offense in the NFL to 19 points, I'm ready to admit I was wrong about Joe Barry. I thought the Skins managed to hire the one person worse than Haslett, but it seems like he's way better. To put it in perspective, last year the Skins were #29 in the league allowing 27.4 points per game. So far this year, they're #12 in the league allowing 20.8 points per game. That's almost a full touchdown difference and is huge.

So yeah, I'm wrong, a lot of others were wrong, but I'm glad actually.

Still not sure if he's good, average, or bad, but early results are he's not horrible and might be at least average.

DC's like QB's are often unfairly judged. The only drive that mattered was the one where we gave up a touchdown, got a mulligan, and have up another.

That takes away a lot of really good things the D did while playing undermanned.

The other big question to answer is why do we always fall apart in the third quarter.

Burgold,

I agree with you on results, but I givec him a lot of credit to devise a plan that holds Falcons to 19 pts, with the lack of secondary talent they skins have AND withouth blitzing every play..  I give him a ton of credit.. Skins defense is void of any playmakers and yet they have been holding thier own

It's been nice to see QB's not quickly go to the first read with success this season (aside from Giants game). QB's appear to be patting the ball and looking around for 3rd and fourth reads much more often. Its shocking a good QB moving off their 1st and 2nd reads they become pedestrian (Matt Ryan). Not saying the D is great, just seem prepared and confident in game plan.

***This is all from recollection, feelings and thoughts from years past and this year so far. I don't study film or anything close to it.

Add in that Hall, Culliver, Breeland, Riley have missed time. We lost Nacho in the first game and Gallette in TC, I think he's doing a helluva job, considering. Haslett used to complain about injuries, I've yet to hear Barry complain about injuries and he's doing more with less then Hazmat could ever dream of. The sacks and turnovers are starting to come also.

Too early to heap praise, the Falcons got what they wanted when it mattered but yesterday was an absolutely fantastic performance from the defense. That unit played to win all game. Stop after stop after stop. An average offense builds up a 10 to 13 point lead before that final Falcons drive.

Breeland's pick should have won it. Gruden put his Pampers on and made sure they didn't.

Barry and Callahan have out coached him all-day everyday for 5 weeks. Running game is currently stifled b/c Gruden can't get his ******* passing game to work, with "his guy" who btw, is playing good enough to win these games.

I was down and as i argued in the initial Joe Barry thread, I was changed to  "show me".

And he is showing me.
i love the passion, i love the attitude, i love the defense making plays and not laying down.

the whole defense is playing with a lot more intensity.

Go Joe!

Wow, Rodriggo, taking the gloves off.

I came here to eat crow about Barry. Your post made me stop in mid-bite. :gag:

I didn't like the soft defense he used in the last 7 minutes of regulation. I'm willing to concede this was partly due to his concerns/doubts on whether his depleted secondary would give up the big play -- but I AM going to watch for whether he goes back to that "pre-vent" tactic in the future, when the defense backfield is more healthy.

Playing soft doesn't suit this defense's temperament -- and they had thoroughly rattled Ryan's passing. Making it easier for Ryan to pass didn't seem like the best strategy.

But I suspect I will probably have to resume nibbling at least on on these crow-legs, because I really do like what I've seen from Barry's influence on the 2015 Skins defense.

Barry is doing a fine job.  Tough break, on that last Atl TD.  Freeman on a middle linebacker was a fail before the ball snapped (as soon as I saw him split out wide I knew it was a slant route and a TD).   It was the personnel we had though.  Tough break.  I will be very content if we can hit the 4-3 mark going into the Bye.  We will get Hall, Culliver, Djax and Reed back after the Bye.   Just in time because New England has a history of given us saw major butt whoopins.  I feel like we can actually hang with them.

HTTR!!!!!

Try to remember that the offense didnt really help much. 0 points off of 2 turnovers.

Also, points against also includes special teams touchdowns, which i think we have let up 1 this year, so that will skew the points per game. Until last week, special teams was constantly screwing us on field position. Looks like they have turned a corner slightly.

Cuz,

It seemed like pressure was there to be had through the middle on Ryan.  It felt to me like the 4th and 2 call demanded it.  A QB like Ryan with time will complete a pass on 4th and 2 to move the chains.  I would have liked to have seen us blitz there and force a quick decision.

You need to come over to the new house to watch a game this season.  I'm near your parents, so there's no excuse.

3 points off the 2 TOs, actually. But yeah, that still sucks. Inexcusable that we went as conservative as we did after the INT.

We also scored a STs TD of our own, btw.

We'll lets not get crazy before the end of the season. I think we all know Julio and Hankerson were injured which contributed to the defense holding them to a low score. I'm reserving my judgement on him until the end of the season.

Still, 3 points off 2 turnovers doesnt get the job done.

The special teams td doesnt really make a difference, especially because it was essentially garbage time.

There's some good and some not so good so far. He certainly hasn't been a disaster, but I haven't seen anything to make me think he was a brilliant hire yet either.

Atlanta's offense is actually pretty short on special talent. It's really just Ryan and Jones who make that offense look high-powered (though Freeman looks like he's getting there). So, when Jones is as hobbled as he obviously was yesterday, I can't really buy into acting like we shut down a spectacular unit.

Agreed with the "good and bad" so far. I guess that invites the fair return of  "who could expect it could be all good right away."

Barry, like much else, is still an event in progress to me. So far, it's better than I'd thought it would be, especially with the relevant injuries and galette's absence, all so early.

But who is trying to sell that we "shut down a spectacular unit"?

Overall, most of the positives I read tend to be guarded and qualified with various conditional remarks.

He's done a fine job, but he needs to abandon going to the soft zone coverages on 3rd/4th downs. Our secondary is clearly more comfortable playing press man. If they get beat they get beat but when you give up soft coverages you're just giving them first downs.

4/4 on fourth downs. Enough said.  I was yelling at the TV that our coverage was so freakin' soft.  Terrible - but I liked everything else that we did in the game (minus the beatdown Freeman gave us).

This is tough for me. I mean, it's clear that Barry has done a nice job. The defense is improved. But, even though 5 games isn't insignificant, I don't know that I can project this team to be a top-12ish D. Then again, in 3 straight weeks we've held our own against the Giants, Eagles, and Falcons. Those teams have rolled over a lot of other defenses.

We also can't ignore that this has been done without our full compliment of players. In fairness, Jones was hobbled and Hankerson is inconsistent/got hurt. But, Matt Ryan is still Matt Ryan (a top-10 QB) and we looked fine down 2 corners.

I'm pleasantly surprised. BUT - I expect the D to keep the momentum going for the next 2 weeks (an unspectacular Jets team and a rookie QB). If we start to struggle before our trip to Foxboro, I'll begin being skeptical again.
