READ THE OP: Odd or Pointless habits...

We all have our quirks, that is not even debatable.

1: I am interested in the quirks that other people would think are odd or pointless that you have.

2 : Now, justify why you have those quirks, habits, OCD things (OCD is not a valid answer).

We all have them...we just need to think about how to verbalize them, to other people that think you/me are crazy. haha.

Some peoples quirks actually are good. Some are simply that moment...wait... why ?

I hate having things associated with numbers on a number that doesn't really make sense.  For example, don't turn the TV volume to 19, turn it to 15, 20, or 25.  Things like that drive me nuts.  You said we can't us OCD as a valid answer so I will just say that I have a weird obsession with things lining up nicely.  I also find myself doing other odd things like that.  Last night I was making French fries in the oven and when I dumped the fries out on the cookie sheet, I started lining them up.  After I had about a quarter of them done, my wife looked at me and told me to stop being weird.  So I messed them all up again and tried not to think about it.  She then pointed out that I couldn't just leave half of them organized and half messed up so I just had to mess them all up so they were at least uniformly messed up.  I have a lot of weird "quirks" like that.

EDIT:  I also don't like being in a house that is on a corner lot.  I absolutely can't sleep in that house.  Thought that is probably some form of PTSD from a bad accident when I was a child.  Really screwed us up when house shopping.  There was a really awesome place for a great price but it was on a corner lot.  I agreed to at least look at it but I started sweating profusely just walking around in there.

I still LEAP up the first 4 stairs if i turn out the light downstairs... with the full knowledge that there is a ghastly grey hand reaching for my neck from behind.

the hair on the back of my neck stands up like a cat sprayed with a hose, and i couldn't go up the stairs slow and dignified if i had $1 million on the line.

I stand. I'll be working on a project or something with someone, and they'll sit down while working on it, but I'll choose to stand, sometimes for hours. I didn't realize it was so odd until it started driving a few people crazy. One guy, whom I'd warned about my tendency for standing and how it can sometimes bother people, said he was fine with it... but then after 20 minutes (and several times asking if I wanted a seat within that time-frame), he got to the point of demanding that I sit down.

So, yeah, I stand, and apparently that's odd. Can't give much justification for it other than I feel like standing. I guess it give more freedom of movement so I can pace around or stretch should the impulse strike

Speech habit.

I am unable to differentiate between the words "pin" and "pen" when spoken out loud. Or "collar" and "color". I also have a problem pronouncing the words .

Obviously, I know the difference.. but those pairs sound the same to me.

Not sure if its a regional accent or not, but my wife constantly gives me grief over it. :P

I still root for and watch the Redskins.

*Gasp*

That does not fit within this topic, nor did you read the OP with that absurd response. haha.

Find that ban yourself thread... immediately.

When, after counting them on my fingers, the number of letters in a sentence is an odd number.  It drives me bonkers.  Yes, I've been clinically diagnosed with OCD, btw LOL.

haha. That does not in any way...haha...not even close to explain why you do it.

That is odd, I'll give you that though.

How many letters here ?  <<<

Omg. I used to do that all the time! (weirdo :) )

One thing I still almost never do is look in a mirror at night when I get up to pee.

I talk to myself.  Always have.  I'll even have "conversations" with people that aren't there, and I know they aren't there.  I'll carry out both sides of the conversation to myself.

I like to think it helps me think things through better.

I also like to doodle about a problem as I think about it.  Sometimes when thinking through a problem with a student, I'll pull out a sheet of paper to draw on and tell the student to ignore what I'm doing on the paper.  The connections to what I'm drawing, the problem, and what I'm saying aren't always obvious.

What makes you think something is grabbing you from behind ?

The other thing I do is a touch things when I walk.  If I'm walking along a chain link fence, I'll be running my hand over it.  If I walk by a tree, I'll reach out and touch the leaves.

I think this might actually be genetic some how.  I've noticed my older daughter does it too, but not my younger one.

I have tiny quirks but most have a story behind them.

When I push open a glass pane door, I always push by the frame or the bar-- never on the glass.  Reason: I had a friend in college who pushed on the glass, shattered it, hit himself in the face with the door and knocked out two front teeth.  It was even funnier because he was upset at the dorm cafeteria lady and was leaving very angrily.

When I walk by a static object that I might walk into (imagine a pulldown lat bar at the gym, or an object with a corner that looks like it'll be painful), I always put my hand on it as a self-reminder to not run into it.  (Another funny story:  This dude at the gym was hitting on this woman and walked right into the heavy lat pulldown bar hanging off the cable.  Dude hit the ground clutching his face.  It was amazing).

When I see a license plate with two sets of numbers, I divide the one by the other to see if there's a pattern and then try to find the greatest common factor between the two.  No reason for that one.

I tend to "like" numbers that are square.  E.g. I probably only know <10 phone numbers at this point in my life.  But one of them is a casual family acquaintance whose phone number ends in 9144 (9 is 3 squared, 144 is 12 squared).

My wife and MIL do that also...it is so odd to me. They want to touch things in stores...I think, why would I want to touch that if I don't want to buy it.

Genetic ? I won't go that far. haha.

This is maybe more of a superstition, I don't know, but when I played soccer, I had to put everything left on first. Left shin pad, left sock, left boot. Because I'm naturally right footed I always used to convince myself I was improving my weaker foot for the game by paying it the first attention. (Don't ask.). And I always had to be last out of the dressing room,

Now, when I'm watching soccer, I can't watch my team take a penalty kick. Have to turn my back on it. Wherever in the World I've travelled to see them. That often takes some explaining to the person behind you're staring intently at like a maniac stalker waiting for their excited or dejected reaction. .

If I fold something (let's say a pamphlet in half, I have to run my fingers up and down the crease 10 times. Both ways. Then another 10 for a double fold. Probably explains why I never took up origami.  :(.

Hail.

i've definitely bought stuff at a store that i don't even need nor want only because i feel like if i don't buy something, the people working there will assume i'm a shoplifter and i must have stolen something if i'm leaving without buying anything.

Some people find it odd how I hold cups. As a precaution, I always slide my pinky finger under whatever cup or container I'm holding, to prevent myself from dropping it. I can't hold a can of soda, a glass, a bowl, anything, without putting the pinky underneath.

I also can't go a single morning without showering. I have to shower every morning, or I feel incredibly dirty. This is probably due to the fact that I had bad acne growing up, and so I was always washing. I get anxiety if I'm not fresh and clean.

That is actually very common.

I do that also.

I can't remember where I saw this, but during a TV story about food waste a guy from a farmer's market said that if he's got one last head of lettuce, he'll never sell it.  If he opens up another box of lettuce and tosses that one head of lettuce in that, he'll sell half the box.

EDIT Found it, it was on John Oliver (6:23 mark) (and yeah, I clearly mis-remembered the lettuce)
