A Louisiana high school football player died after suffering an injury while playing, the Franklin Parish coroner's office said.

Tyrell Cameron, a student at Franklin Parish High School, died shortly after he was transported to Franklin Medical Center late Friday, said coroner's officer spokesman Shane Scott.

The player was hit during a punt return in the fourth quarter in the game against Sterlington High School, Head Coach Barry Sebren told CNN affiliate KNOE.

Northeast Louisiana Ambulance Service was on the sidelines during the game and rushed onto the field to help when Cameron was injured.

The cause of death is under investigation, but KNOE reported Cameron broke his neck.

In all the concussion talk recently, I keep wondering when somebody was going to die on the field in a D1 College game or the NFL. Of course this is high school. But you have players saying they wouldn't let their kids play. You have parents holding their kids out. You have kids/players themselves getting bigger and faster and stronger....leading to bigger hits.

Are we closer to a tipping point, and nobody is talking about it?

Unfortunately there are, on average, about a dozen deaths each year that occur during football practices or games.

All other sports experience fatalities as well. Most are caused by some underlying heart condition.

This looks like a broken neck. I'm just wondering if we're going to see a player die on an NFL field before they can cart him off...in the next few years.

With any contact sport comes the risk of injury or death. Football, hockey, even basketball or baseball to a lesser extent, carry risks of major injury or death. The risk of more severe injury is exponentially lower than common sprains, breaks and tears though.

Don't want to get hurt, don't play. Pick a different sport like golf or tennis. Parents shouldn't force their kids into specific sports but I also don't think they should forbid their kids from playing something that they truly enjoy.

This.  There is risk and reward with pretty much every human activity.  Driving a car is particularly deadly for teens.  You also can't shut kids in a closet because that just ****s them up in a different way.

Very sad situation for the family. Prayers sent.

Sport Science has come a long way in protecting players from severe head injuries throughout the last 2 or 3 decades.

But just curious, are the players still being taught to go for the tackle shoulder/head first?

Umm, no, not with the head. Been a long time since those days.

U tackle with tops of your shoulder pads
