Commander Chaaarmnder
Pardon me if this is in the wrong place, but it's pretty bigtime breaking news. All in for Captain Kirk week 1. "The Washington Redskins have named Kirk Cousins as their starting quarterback for their regular-season opener, team sources told ESPN's Dianna Russini. The Redskins' coaching staff informed the players that Cousins will start against the Miami Dolphins in Week 1 on Monday morning, sources told Russini. Redskins coach Jay Gruden is expected to address the media later Monday after the team's practice." http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/13549307/kirk-cousins-washington-redskins-named-week-1-starting-qb

Burgold
I think it's probably the right choice. I'll admit I feel a bit sad about it. The promise of RGIII is a hard one to let go of, but Griffin is hurt again and doesn't seem ready. He played okay against Cleveland and could do nothing in Detroit. If Gruden believes more in Cousins then that is who he should coach and play. Â As I said in my thread today... He better be right though.

Koolblue13
I'm so happy about this. I'm ready to move on. Even if RG ends up on another team and has success and Kirk doesn't pan out. I don't care.

Rskins06
Well, those of you who want Gruden gone, this is one way to do it. Jay was probably never really in the RG3 fan crowd anyway. However, he could always use the excuse of "I had to start him" or "he was never my guy" to justify failure. Now, if Kirk Cousins truly is given the reigns (no reason to think otherwise.....unless the wild card is McCoy getting the start) and fails, then Gruden can't say he wasn't his guy.  I, however, believe you will see a more effective offense. Will KC throw INTs? Probably (most definitely)! Will the offense score more points? Absolutely believe the offense will score more points! With a better defense, maybe they can offset some of the turnovers.  Not saying a playoff team by any stretch but a team which is definitely more competitive.  If anything, season just became more interesting. DM72
As far as I'm concerned, Gruden's job security is now tied to Cousins. He pretty much ran RGIII out of here, now if Cousins craps the bed running his offense, then what?
gaskinsfan
Snyder has finally let his management team run things. I reallly hope things work out well and we win a bunch of games. Not just to reward Kirk/Colt and their patience and hard work, but also so Dan learns that letting football people run the team gets better results.
TimmySmith
Well, those of you who want Gruden gone, this is one way to do it. Gruden has been given 3 QBs and all of them have been given ample chance to show themselves. I am not quite sure what more he can do.
gortiz
one thing I noticed is Kirk using a lot more "touch" on his passes ... he wasn't strong arming everything.  I'll add this ... I am thinking Kirk's success and maybe even freaking career will hinge on one player ... JORDAN REED.

This is news that stands on it's own. (Assuming it holds true)  I was thinking the exact same thing as KoolBlue at first, but if the boss says it's good, then it's good! Woot!    But wasnt Jay Gruden that same guy that championed Mccoy and let Cousins mentally self destruct  http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/12/07/gruden-wants-to-see-if-he-can-build-a-team-around-colt-mccoy/  worst part is we all know Gruden wont make it past this season, he's too incompetent to be a head coach  Well, I can remember a worthy HoF coach, not so long ago, ready to put his reputation at stakes on Grossman and Beck... Don't want to go too far on the Gruden thing, but that incompetent guy as assembled a nice group of coaching to me this year. And I'll just stop here.  Cousins as the starter is just a logical move in this whole story. As I've always said since 2012/2013 when we were discussing the trade for Cousins, I've always advocated to trade Griffin due to the injury bug (thinking he won't last long in the NFL). So, if that is indeed true, as I'll need a real statement from the Coach or the Redskins organization, moving to Cousins is the obvious move to me.  I still do fear that it happens too late in Cousins career. His interviews lately he seemed not much interested and willing to play for us. He seemed like a guy on the move. Someone that will go his final year and leave when he's a FA. Saying stuff like: "I'm number two, it's Robert's team and that's how it is", means you're not expecting much and do not care anymore to me. thamajinforte
I'm so happy about this. I'm ready to move on. Even if RG ends up on another team and has success and Kirk doesn't pan out. I don't care. Â that's what I'm saying. The 2012 RG3Mania was a great memory, but that is all it will ever be. Griffin has been mediocre since stepping back on the field in 2013 and has made very little progress if any. All the drama surrounding him and this team is toxic, and regardless of whether he becomes a great QB or not is irrelevant when it comes to the Washington Redskins, because it just isn't going to happen in DC. Wasting time by trying to re-locate the same lightening bolt from 2012 to re-capture in the same bottle. The organization and Robert are clearly in the midst of a somewhat ugly and greatly mishandled mutual departure, but it's clearly mutual at this point. The fan base has gotta pop a couple of xanex and detach from all this emotional hysteria and move on too. Â And it is also irrelevant if Kirk or Colt go out and prove themselves to be either franchise quarterbacks or perennial backups, which is no guarantee for either of them. This team can go 0-16 this year and still did the right thing in moving on from Robert Griffin. It's time to get a clear view of what they have in Cousins and McCoy (specifically Cousins given he is the younger QB with what most believe to be a higher upside despite his recklessness) to allow GM Scotty 2 Hotty to properly gameplan the buildup for the next 5-10 years of this franchise. Simple as that.

Jandre002
Does this mean hes the starter for the season though? I assume it does, but it could also be because Griffin won't even be retested until well into the week. Â And I agree. Anything less than 8-8, Gruden should be sent packing. Â Essentially ending the career of our biggest player in DC shouldn't be done for a "less sucky" season. If we don't win, hes proven nothing, and should be shown the door as well. He actually isn't saying those things anymore, talking more about wanting to start.  He seemed totally motivated to me against the Ravens.  If he pans out, that would be huge in at least lessening the blow of what we gave up for RG3 vs. what we got.
PlayAction
I guess it's news that the starting QB for week 1 is Cousins instead of McCoy. RG3 was out regardless because of the concussion protocols.
