Destino
Here's What Amnesty International's Sex Work Proposal Really MeansThe basic idea is to decriminalize prostitution everywhere. Amnesty International will vote this month on whether to advocate worldwide decriminalization of sex work. If the policy is adopted, the human rights group will call for governments to eliminate most laws that prohibit selling or buying sex. Advocates for sex workers strongly back the idea. A petition in support of such a policy has garnered more than 6,000 signatures, including dozens from sex worker support and advocacy groups in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and Latin America. The proposal has also received harsh criticism from anti-trafficking activists as well as from celebrities like Anne Hathaway, Lena Dunham and Kate Winslet. Amnesty International will consider the policy during its international council meeting, to be held in Dublin on Aug. 7-11. The group has said that "it is not possible to speculate" on the vote's outcome. Here are the basics on what the draft proposal says and the most prominent arguments for and against its adoption http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/amnesty-international-sex-work-prostitution_55bfb184e4b06363d5a2e89b?kvcommref=mostpopular
Larry
Looks like a no brainier, to me. Selling is legal. ****ing is legal. So how come selling ****ing is illegal? -George Carlin. Now, I can see the logic of SOME of the arguments against it. Although other arguments against it just seem to come from an alternate reality. RedBeast
First three things i would do if elected President: 1. Legalize Prostitution, ala Germany. Profession. See a doctor weekly, taxable and money goes to healthcare, 30 years minimum for convicted rape - no parole. 2. Legalize marijuana. Reap tax benefits. Half to healthcare and half to hard core drug enforcement/fighting cartels 3. Completely change government procurement policies

Nixon, walking through a red-tinted, flaming, cave, holding something gooey in his outstretched hand. "Three things I promise to do, if reelected - break the back of inflation, end the war in Vietnam, and carry this snowball through here".
Destino
This is an argument for full legalization calling itself decriminalization. It seeks to remove all criminal penalties for selling or buying sex, and for operating a business that facilitates and caters to this particular business. That's a bit more than simply asking cops to stop bothering with prostitutes. In case anyone cares about my opinion, I'm 100% against making prostitution a legal and thus socially sanctioned career. I don't like the social implications of having young people and the poor seeing this as a legit employment option and I think the argument that it won't increase trafficking to be absurdly weak at best. I think it would increase trafficking and allow slavers to parade their stock out in the open. Those people operate under threat already, it's not like they can't force them to sign consent forms and tell them to claim they were sought employment. I heard an interesting argument with regards to trafficking. How does law enforcement identify people who are trafficked into other jobs such as field workers? Why are sex workers any different. Do what most of the world does, get rid of the pimps and allow the women and men to work. Reap the tax benefits.

I will point out that I don;t believe that there's a huge market for organized criminals importing slaves to work in other, legal, professions. (Although I admit, I wouldn't be shocked it if occurs in some jobs, in some places.) And, at least if prostitution is legal, that might get rid of one reason why supposed slaves are scared to go to the cops.
Riggo-toni
The Dutch have by far the best solution. Streetwalking is illegal, but prostitutes get licensed and can work in designated areas. They pay taxes, are interviewed by social workers, get medical exams, are required to use condoms, and have their age verified. Makes a whole lot more sense then pushing it underground and turning ot into a brutal cash cow for organized crime. Prostitution has been legal for most of our nation's history. Ben Franklin was a frequent patron of brothels. It was only after WW1 when an army barracks suffered an epidemic of syphilis that a nationwide movement to outlaw it began. Like prohibition, its advocates were completely oblivious to all the unintended consequences of outlawing something that so many people desired. TradeTheBeal!
I've been a successful male prostitute for almost 20 years now. Business could hardly be better. Regulation and healthcare would just be the icing on the cake at this point.

Successful and business couldn't be better ? Well, you must be fortunate.

We here at Aacme entertainment can help you! Come to our offices at 123 Main Street, and bring a big smile, and a big ****** we will supply co-stars and photography services for you to film a scene for your portfolio." then just have a hooker and a tripod, and you are set. right? Fred Jones
I remember being stationed in Germany, young and clueless (well clueless has not changed), and driving by a lady with a red candle on the ground on a regular street. No one seemed to bother the ladies and the places with the red candles in the windows seemed professional. I never explored, but it just seemed ordinary. But then, we would head down to the beer tents at the Oktoberfest in Munich and I always remember thinking we could never do this in the U.S because we would have to much disorderliness and mayhem. So, could the U.S. handle what some European countries have been doing for years? I think overall, no, but you could have specific areas where it would work. I do like the concept Redbeast posted above. Edit: Korea was a different story. It was dirty and just not clean. I remember, on more than one occasion, as I walked down the street some Mama-San would grab my arm and encourage me to come to a brothel. Was definitely different than Germany. Destino
Google Germany and sex trafficking. Making it legal just makes it easier for sex traffickers to scour the worlds impoverished populations to feed the sexual appetites of the first world. Europe's attitude is what it's always been, the pretense of superiority and forward thinking built on the suffering of other populations that they simply choose not to see. The way they handle it just looks nicer, because without appearances it's harder to pretend things aren't the way they'd like to imagine them. RedBeast
Saw the "girls" parking lot at a club in Germany. BMWs Mercedes and Porsches...all new and high end models. You want to stop prostitution? Cut the penis off every man in the world. Its been going on since the dawn of man. Same with pimping etc. You dont think a man brought a woman from Bethlehem to Jerusalem to work? Google German rape laws and percentage of rape victims in Germany vs the US. I've been on all 5 contintents on this earth, from Saudi to Singapore. Many women feed their families and go to school because of their job. Go to SE DC. It aint pretty either. Go to Kings Cross in Sydney. It aint pretty either. Go to Bosa in Bogota. It aint pretty either. There are bad people in this world. Always has been, always will be. Pick your battles and win the ones you pick. REALITY.
