REDSKINS SIGN LB JUNIOR GALETTE

RICHMOND, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed free agent linebacker Junior Galette. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. In addition, the team waived linebacker Ja’Gared Davis from its Non-Football Injury list.

Galette (6-2, 258) originally entered the NFL as a college free agent with the New Orleans Saints on April 26, 2010. He spent five seasons with the Saints, appearing in 64 regular season games with 30 starts from 2010-14 before being released on July 27, 2015.

For his career, Galette has recorded 122 total tackles (87 solo), including 34 tackles for loss and 31.5 sacks. He has also registered five forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Last season, Galette played in all 16 games for New Orleans, recording 10 sacks to reach double digits in that category for the second consecutive year. His 22 combined sacks across the last two seasons ranked tied with Ryan Kerrigan for second-most in the NFC and tied for sixth-most in the NFL.

Galette played collegiately at Stillman College as a senior in 2009, earning second-team All-American honors with 56 tackles and 9.5 sacks that season. Prior to his time at Stillman, he played in 33 games at Temple from 2006-08 and was a second-team All-MAC selection as a junior.

Galette, 27, attended St. Joseph Regional H.S. in Montvale, N.J., where he played both linebacker and wide receiver. The native of Port Au Prince, Haiti was born on March 27, 1988.

This is great, but what does this say about Trent Murphy? Or is Junior too good to not pass up despite having some depth with Trent and Preston now.

Why does the signing of a quality player have to mean something towards another player?  A team wants as many good players as possible.

What did the trade for Steve Young say about Joe Montana?  Or did it allow the 49ers to be great for years?

Way too good to pass up.  Guy has put up Orakpo '09-'11 numbers past two years, and we got him for the NFL equivalent of a merry jig.

I don't think it really says anything about Murphy when you get such a crazy good deal.  This is like the Terrance Knighton deal, except loads better.

Key downside is his off the field stuff, but hey, if Dallas can sign Greg Hardy and be praised for making a gamble that paid off when his suspension dropped to 4 games, we sure as heck are allowed to get a guy of questionable character for vet min.

Only issue is that he thinks we're a "functional organization."  Scot must work FAST, because 8 months ago we were anything but that.

I'm just thankful to be with such a functional organization.

Doesn't look like his agent did a good enough job explaining who he signed with.

More seriously, it does sound like McCloughan's doing all he can to turn this thing around. Refreshing change to hear a player sign with the Skins not for cash, but for a competent pitch. I'll try to stay calm.

EDIT: Wow, I hope this isn't the same guy.

Say what you will about the man, but I noticed today, during practice, that he was helping out a couple of the younger guys. It seemed as though he was often talking about and demonstrating techniques to them after plays.

I think it's a good contract.  Hopefully, he stays on the straight an narrow and gets another 12 sacks for us this year.

A talented football player. Few undrafted players ever attain his level of success. If healthy, gives a definite boost to the pass rush. One could imagine a 3rd down specialist / rotational player, if hampered with health. One of the guys I liked / wanted in 2010.

He has an interesting stride to the way he runs. An upright runner with a bounding stride, heel to toe and/or flatfooted placement. It seemed more pronounced back in college. Sometimes the movements seemed a little herky-jerky, but I believe that to be misrepresentative due to the fact that his arms swing wide and are very active gesticulating.

He's smoothed out his running style since joining the NFL. He's even begun to run more on the balls of his feet. He always had a natural spin move. He displayed that at Temple and Stillman. He's likewise racked up sacks in the NFL with the spin against over-setting OTs. OTs that square-up to block, rather than extend the pocket with a kick-slide, get the spin.

He's a hands technique passrusher, overall. Needs to have the tactile sense of hitting and disengaging for his tempo. Often it's a combo attack of a fake move one direction coupled with the hands hit, then a quick change of direction in conjunction with the hands rip / disengage. Not a pure speed edge rusher. He relies on quickness, fakes and hands to win the battle.

The vast majority of the time he was a four-point stance passrusher in N.O.

Rarely was he in a two-point, though there were occurrences. He often seemed to come from a wide-9 alignment, or at least a pronounced 7-Tech. His stance in the four-point had a pronounced forward lean and head drop. He liked to get a sprinter's start.

If the coaches here are ok with that (four-point), then that would suit him best. Trying to make him go two-point for the sake of it will likely only disrupt his tempo and get-off.

The spin move is the wildcard, and it is impressive. Can't think of many, since Freeney, who could drop a spin and be successful with it as often.

*Knowing ES, his after sack celebration will be a topic of discussion.

I dunno GHH....you can maybe say he was a LR cancer, because some players have certainly corroborrated that (though there seem to be factors involved in that as well). You can say he probably blew it as a team captain by mis-firing on several attempts to encourage or push his own teammates via the press.

But the more we look at his so-called "off field failures" it is much less cut & dry than a dude who choked/beat a woman, ; then threw her on top of a mountain of fully automatic weapons & threatened her life.

For all intents & purposes we have 2 incidents that involve women, which superficially looks bad....but they are actually the least credible examples of bad character. The only one that holds water is a ) why did he get his license suspended, & b ) why did he then drive with a suspended license? Hardly criminal, but head-scratching for a multi-millionaire.

The first incident was reportedly where he allegedly injured the arm of a woman whilst removing her from his domicile. Supposedly it was a sutuation where he was in the right, & the charges were eventually dropped. The video from 2013 then recently surfaces which...if it is actually him (debatable, but certainly plausible), clearly shows him fending off an irrationally violent crowd who is attacking his group of people. He seems to be acting more as a peacekeeper (if one flailing a belt can be considered peace-keeping) than an assailant, & above all else....i would almost consider that person's actions commendable. Almost.

Of course...as i've been trawling media sources to see differing opinions on the matter, & trying to pit what i see vs what people are reporting...& all i get is lazy short sentences that skim over his history & short-labeling him as a domestic abuser, or woman beater.

If those 2 incidents are all anyone is going on then he makes Hardy look like John Wayne Gacy.

Just amuses me how we bust on Dallas for Hardy. Yet turn a blind eye when we sign one.

Selective fan standards.

Hail.

Durn tootin'!

I do the exact same thing.   Had Dallass signed him, I would've been all over that.  How disgraceful, to pick up a POS, like

Galette, etc

Since we signed him, I now believe in 2nd chances, that forgiveness is divine, that he was misunderstood.....

I thought the NFL is still investigating Galette's Miami incident. So a suspension could still be in the picture? However it turns out, the a Skins have a talented player in the fold, and I suspect Galette would remember who was willing to take a chance on him when the chips were down.

My other question -- if New York's Goodell does his typical **** and comes down hard on Galette, what would be the implication, contract-wise for the Skins?

I have mixed feelings about this signing -- while we get greater depth at our outside LB position, and likely a great Special Teams contributor ...I can't deny the character issues trouble me.

But somehow, he strikes me as someone who just winds into the wrong situations at the wrong time. (Granted, some of it seems self inflicted.) Maybe he can straighten out ... but it will take some major behavior changes and a good supporting cast.

However, if the Redskins develop the skill - and a track-record-- for helping talented players rebuild from earlier mistakes -- that widens the range of players Washington might be able to sign.

Bottom line: I like this gamble by McCloughan a lot more than some of the gambles by Shanahan/Allen.

A 20-something acting like a knucklehead? Shocking!

Yeah, he needs a leash and McClue got him in such a way that we can cut him loose at a moment's notice, all well and good, but let's see how he pans out. We of all people know what a fratass lockerroom can do to players, we saw plenty of it w/ the DC club scene hosting the weekly Skins embarrassment episode not too long ago. Whole new attitude in the clubhouse, new roster w/ a lot of guys focused on results, I want to see how Junior reacts to it. If not, I'll light the torches and sharpen the pitchforks.

Not arguing that at all.

1 player for Skins vs. several for Dallas. Plus I don't see anyone ignoring it, in fact I see many looking further into it. Moss worked for the Pats. If we have a string lockerroom this move could work for us. If not, we cut him for no cost and make an example of him. Or he proves an example of redemption and strengthens the lockerrom. Low risk, high reard. Unlike the Cowboys who just committed long-term to a WR with abuse issues and other nuisance players.

This is great, but what does this say about Trent Murphy? Or is Junior too good to not pass up despite having some depth with Trent and Preston now.

It says that Trent, while a good run defender, has not been very good at rushing the passer.

So, the team needs more pass rushing talent to make up for what was lost when Orakpo was lost.

My guess is that Trent and Preston will be somewhat unaffected, because Junior will line up with his hands in the dirt in front of one of them on passing downs.

With a contract this small, they can use him as little as they want and still get their money's worth.

I gotta say, calling a guy a "peacemaker" for whipping people with a belt feels like a watershed moment in ES history.

Ok...peacemaker is hyperbolic for effect....indicating lunacy on either side....satirical, if you will. Sorry for the lack of sarcasm meter.

However..."watershed" moment....on ES? you may have been here a while, but have you REALLY been here?

If you must have my direct opinion on the subject, it's that i don't have one other than SM did a great job to mitigate the potential negative impact. Also, that it's not exactly a world-class athlete chin-checking an otherwise defenseless woman (singular) in an elevator, with no obvious threat to your life. This video has the word "indiscernible fault" written all over it. ALL OVER IT. & fwiw, i absolutely feel it is irresponsible, & asinine to make judgements on anything i was not there to witness from beginning to end. We would all be much more sane if we didn't attempt to play G_d with every incident we see on teh interwebz.

But...if you must...ftr, i am simply trying to express the unclear basis for such ridiculous incredulity by tossing out varied opinions based on what was shown. I mean...for all we know he saw a bunch of people gathering around & was like "hey guys...watch this," & turned on "TURN DOWN FOR WHAT!!!" at full blast before sprinting over there, belt in hand, flailing his belt around while screaming "WHY SO SERIOUS?!"
