I can’t quit you babe

But I think I’m gonna put you down for a little while

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsmY0tFJEIE

Driving home today this great Led Zeppelin classic came on.  I think it perfectly describes where I am as a Redskins fan.  While I still have this primal love for the Redskins, I just can’t do it anymore.  I can’t muster the usual summer optimism that leads to that sinking disappointment every fall Sunday.  I can’t rearrange my fall weekend schedule around a team that will most assuredly stink again.  I can’t invest another penny into a team that is so poorly operated.  But I also can’t declare honestly that I will never be a fan of the team I have loved since I was six years old again.

So here’s what I’m gonna do.  Seeing as I live in Florida, I’m a Sunday Ticket subscriber.  Tonight I’m calling DirecTV to cancel the subscription.  I’m telling my family not to buy me any Redskins gear as presents anymore – I refuse to support this incompetent owner in any way.  It’s not a divorce.  It’s a trial separation.  I don’t demand Dan Snyder sell the team, but I won’t invest emotionally or financially into this fiasco anymore.  At least not until there’s reason for optimism.

You build my hopes so high

And then you let me down so low

Maybe the team will change hands – and then I’ll be back.  Maybe SM is the real deal and he is able to assemble a team to be proud of in a few years – and then I’ll be back.  But I seriously doubt these things are possible.  I doubt Snyder, who is my age, will sell the team before I die.  I doubt Danny suddenly becomes a wise and prudent employer and manager.  I doubt a GM who’s a recovering alcoholic, no matter how talented, can stay off the sauce working in the toxic environment that is the Washington Redskins organization.

So I’m stepping back.  I’ll be pulling for the team from a distance.  As the scores scroll across the bottom of the screen or are announced on the radio when I’m out enjoying my Sunday afternoon, I’ll take note of how they’re doing.  When the Skins are winning I’ll feel good for all you active fans, and when they’re (more likely) getting their asses handed to them I’ll feel bad for you.

As I write this I’m wondering can I really do this?  Can the guy who wore a Skins sweatshirt in his first grade class picture, who cried so much when they lost Super Bowl VII that his dad promised (and delivered) a trip to the Super Bowl the next time they went (Super Bowl XVII), who ritually ate Ledo’s pizza every Sunday watching the games from 1971 through 1992 until he moved south, who has missed watching maybe 5 games in the last 44 years really break this bond?  Yes, I think I can. I think I must.  There is just no joy left in being a Redskins fan.  Only misery.  And we all know who we have to thank for that.

So goodbye fellow suffering Redskins fans.  Until there’s a reason for hope and optimism and fun and joy, I won’t be riding this train to Failville any more.  I know I’m not the first to do this, and I know I won’t be the last.  I’ve reached my limit.  All the goodwill from EBW’s and the Squire’s supurb tenures as stewards of this great institution has been used up.  I’m empty.

I always tell myself stuff like this.  Then the Redskins have a moderately warm streak relatively early in the season (e.g. winning 2 of 3 after an 0-3 start), and suddenly I convince myself its a young team and it just took them a couple extra games to get rolling, but the rest of this season might be the beginning of something special.

The Redskins luck seems to have changed right after your disatrous decision to stop eating Ledo's.  Maybe its your fault :P

I will say that as a out-of-towner it gets easy to just turn it off and do something else.  The gym is near-empty during Bears games and I can fairly easily isolate myself from Redskins-related news.  That's actually made my fanhood easier.

I had the exact opposite revelation today. After being pretty disconnected since last year, I found myself with more spare time than usual. I ended up watching some of the Redskin season recaps dating back to 1982 and suddenly I'm very excited for the season. My expectations haven't changed, but I'm excited that football and the Redskins are back.

Quitting at the end of our 20 year misery cycle is not recommended. Look forward to you coming back singing Celebration Day.

My, my, my, I'm so happy, I'm gonna join the band,

We are gonna dance and sing in celebration,

We are in the promised land.

Hit me up when you get back. First beer is on me (i know you will be peeking at W/L's)

Led Zeppelin is the greatest band ever...I have the exact feelings it's almost like bipolar one day I'm very excited and think good things are going to happen the very next day I know we are going to bomb and only win 3 games I'm used to it have been for 23 years now... but I have come to realization that that is why I am a die hard Redskins fan I think that's what keeps me coming back year in and year out last year four wins the win at Dallas extremely exciting the win at home to put the Eagles out extremely exciting so look out of a four-game win season I put a couple exciting moments together.. I know this might not make sense please don't hang me for it but I think I would rather the Redskins not win every single year like the Patriots do and I don't necessarily mean win the Superbowl every year but every year they win their division god I sound sick but maybe that's why I love the Redskins so much..I don't know...I do know one thing...I AM ABSOLUTELY PUMPED(AGAIN)FOR ANOTHER SEASON OF WASHINGTON REDSKINS FOOTBALL!!!!!

We usually get these in December lol.

You'll be back by the first preseason game. Just drop all the expectations and learn to laugh at the suck and woeful incompetence on and especially off the field . It's much more fun.

or in October, lately..

but yeah, and this is to the OP..  don't give up yet...  you're in the same boat as the rest of us.  it's been a while since fielding a consistently winning team..  and here's why you need to stick around...  a real GM has been hired...  for us long suffering fans, this is the best reason to have optimism..  will it happen this year?  probably not..  will we see something that's going to be competitive in the next couple years?  i certainly have more hope now than i have since snyder bought the team...  we're trending upward..  and will be something to contend with soon...  just have to have faith...  :)

and just to be light hearted a little bit after seeing the title, this is for the rest of us... (kinda hog related.. haha)

Zepplin was around for 8 short years. Hendrix was a person, not a band and also not around long. I don't know wtf prodigy is.

AC/DC has been doing it over 40 years. Nobody has been able to copy them either. I've seen 3 generations of women sitting together singing their songs. AC/DC is the most rocking band of all time.

It's the wrong time to quit us. We're finally turning it around. You'll be back as soon as we start winning. Why even post about it? You're not breaking up with us here on ES. We'll be fine.

Wow, what a coincidence, I just dropped my NFL network package today, too. I'm still a fan, but I can't pay $300+ for what I've been seeing the past few years. I hope GMSM fixes it.  I'll still read what I can, watch all the highlights I can up here in the state of WA, still wear my redskins jersey to work on Fridays, but not gonna pay, not gonna get too emotionally involved.  Heck, if they turn it around this year and all it took was for me to not pay for the NFL package, its worth it!

Really appreciate the support.  This is much cheaper than therapy.

Thing is that by training camp the December feeling is usually gone.  This year it ain't.

My kids are teenagers and they think I'm some sort of crazy masochist every fall.  They're like, "Have the Redskins ever been good?" "Why do you care so much?"  or in a whisper "Stay away from Dad, the Redskins are losing again."

See man, that last line is/was me to a tee. My mom used to say the same about me and now my GF knows too. This past NHL/NBA playoffs left me in a dark place and now, I've realized that **** is way too unhealthy.

Especially for this team, who never ever reciprocates anything. So now, I'm just sitting back and enjoying being a fan....a very self aware fan

I much prefer Beck's version. Zeppelin's best blues song was Since I've been loving you. Not even close.

Haven't heard Jeff Beck's version in years.  Rod Stewart singing.  Was that on Truth or Beck-ola?  I forget.  Great version of Ain't Superstitious on one of those records too.

Hendrix changed the face of music as we know it. Only EVH changed guitar playing (upside down rather) like Hendrix did.

If you want to use living legends than David Gilmour smacks the **** out of Angus Young.

TK...3 chords! Love you man! (Didnt know you played?)

Those are both on Truth.

Beckola had a couple good songs but wasn't too great.
