Totally Agree. The team has a very long way to go.

This week while in my car I thought about the women’s World Cup semifinal game between the United States and Germany that I planned to watch that night. So, I tuned to a D.C. sports radio talk show, hoping to learn more about the game.

Also, the Nationals were going for their ninth win in 10 games; the Wizards just traded up to get a 6-foot-7 swingman with a 7-foot-2 wingspan; and the Capitals drafted a goalie from Russia in the first round. So, lots of strong topical subjects.

Instead, the radio protozoa were discussing crummy former Washington NFL quarterback Mark Brunell who had just decided to change his opinion of current crummy quarterback Robert Griffin III — from thumbs sideways to thumbs down. They talked. They took calls. They talked more.

Who knows the exact moment when we finally go insane?

What is the mass delusion that engulfs Washington and allows it to continue to obsess about one awful team in one sport — endlessly, year-round? When will this town face the NFL facts: When a franchise gets as bad as ours has become over an extended period of time — 32-64 in the past six seasons, outscored by 457 points, it usually stays bad for years and years. And years.

I have said all along, we need to look at where this team is in 3 years, not this year.

Scot took step 1.  Realize the team stinks and rebuild it.  So he used draft picks and low cost free agents to put competition at every position.

Step 2 is to draft your own, and stay out of free agency (until you build a foundation of your own type of players).

We are at step 1.  We need 3 years of drafting to see where we are.

I really have trouble seeing this team competing for a playoff spot until 2018

So I am looking at year 4. I am thinking of how long it took the 49ers once GMSM took over there

Probably right, unless Griffin suddenly becomes great.

The one positive Boswell left out is the Redskins finally focused on roster building this year and not looking for the next toy to trot out on the field and not believing they are a good franchise on the field.

I'm just gonna ask why?

Seriously.  Why?

We improved all the weak areas of our team.  So why are we gonna be bad for a long time?  Do we just write off Griffin now?  Are some of the guys we signed obvious scrubs who's release date is already set?

Because you don't rebuild a team in a year that's been garbage like we have.  It's kind of the point of the article ;) But like the radio shows he references, you still seem to think it can be this year.

until you tell me which players are bad all your evidence for us being bad is that teams don't rebuild in a year.

The NFL is your evidence.  Teams that draft well year over year consistently compete in the playoffs.  We haven't done that.  We don't even have evidence that this years draft is good.

Historical evidence in the NFL tells us exactly what Boswell wrote about.  You don't have to believe it or want to believe it.

don't analyze the NFL.  Analyze the Redskins roster and tell me where I should expect the team to fail.

That's like saying ignore history.  Facts are facts.  The Redskins starters should be predominately players drafted by the Redskins.  Do this year after year and then you have a team built the Redskins way.  Right now, we are in year one of a rebuild so the roster is in year 1 of playing together and will play like that.

What team have you been watching over the past 20 years? Analyze the roster over the past 20 years and tell me how they have failed. It takes more then decent players to win in this league. The problem starts at the top of the franchise. End of story.

The team is assembling lots of guys to try and be "not God awful"

However good teams are built through the draft. You don't collect "upgrades" (unless its Peyton Manning at QB) and suddenly turn into a contender.

Things like cohesion, continuity, systems do matter. Which is why teams that can draft and develop do well over the long term, and teams like the Redskins have flash in a pan years every 5 years

Yeah its a poor article.  Not because I disagree with the idea this team will not be as good as people want to believe this offseason, but because his reasoning is poorly thought out.  Stats are meaningless if you dont have the intelligence to interpret them, which I guess he doesnt.  2 terrible seasons in the NFL tell you about the past, and that you are likely to repeat it if you dont do anything different.  But in the NFL players move quickly, there are new drafts every year, and many new faces.  So then what stays the same that leads to franchises being terrible year in and year out?  The front office.  Its as simple as that.  The front office is the stability of good franchises, not players.

Exactly. And good front offices are methodical and take the long view.

SM is a good GM. Didn't make rash moves and the team will suck less then 2013-2014, but is still a very long way from no longer being a bad team.

It'll take a few drafts

Bashing the 'Skins at this point is just going for the low hanging fruit.  Why wouldn't we be bad in theory for a couple seasons?  First, our QB situation is not situated just yet.  Our 1st round draft pick QB from 2012 is in a "prove it year" so right off the bat, the next few seasons could hinge on him proving his worth in 2015.

Also, the team just basically started over last season.  Do quick turn arounds sometimes happen, sure, but they aren't the norm, at least not for consistent success.  A lot of worsts to firsts fade after a season or two, OR, they had all the talent to begin with and underachieved or took a season or so to gel and put it all together.  Our team falls into neither of those categories.

In fairness to Boswell, the opening of the article is about the pending soccer game, and the Nats, then turning on the radio to hear what Brunell has to say about RG3.  From what I hear, we are the only city with sports talk radio that talks primarily about the NFL.

actually, looking at the Redskins history the past 20 years, I feel that most often the Redskins failed because of lack of quality players.  Either through drafting poorly or signing players who didn't fit or were past their prime.  That's how it was so easy to identify and cut so many people.  For example safety and guard have been positions of general weakness for a very long time, with only occasional bright spots.  There's also been a lot of times we had a lousy QB, or problems at WR
